Description from owner

Description

Nestling on the banks of the river Dart, this 400 year old thatched cottage, enjoys a unique and secluded waterfront location.

Smuggler's is a beautiful holiday cottage which sits in a prime location in the South Devon village of Dittisham.

Enjoy sailing to your door, fishing from the patio or simply watch the boats and wildlife pass you by from this perfect waterside location.

Smugglers Cottage is a four-bedroom property that sleeps eight. The bedrooms, living room, dining room and study all enjoy fabulous river views of the Dart.

The ground floor accommodation includes a sitting room with flagstone floor and wood burning stove, dining room with doors to the terrace, study, and kitchen with cooker, fridge freezer, dishwasher and washer-dryer.

The upstairs bedrooms include a master bedroom with super-king sized bed. This room enjoys patio doors leading on to a raised terrace and an en-suite bath/shower room. Two further double bedrooms and a twin room follow along with a family bathroom with large walk in shower.

Outside is a fabulous split-level terrace with table and chairs to enjoy the beautiful views of the River Dart.

Dittisham, is a traditional Devon fishing village located on the River.

A short stroll along the beach from Smugglers is the quay, home to the local pub (The Ferry Boat Inn), and the Anchorstone Cafe (open March - September). Both of which share Smugglers' stunning views of the Dart. Regular ferries to Dartmouth and across the water to The National Trust's Greenway (Agatha Christies holiday residence) also run from here.

Other facilities in Dittisham include a village shop, playground, café, two pubs, boat hire and sailing school.

Please note: The river Dart at Dittisham is Tidal. At high water the beach is submerged and the river surrounds the house. There are steep steps and a path behind the cottage for access during high tide.

The cottage is, therefore, not suitable for the elderly or infirm and young children should be supervised.

Parking is possible on the beach at low tide. Cars must be parked in the village at high tide.

Dogs welcome, £25/dog.

“Unbeatable in every way!”

Reviewed 27 Mar 2017

The location of Smugglers Cottage is the main reason we booked - and we were not disappointed. The cottage is literally on the beach and the tide comes up the side of the house. From the outside it is the epitome of an English country cottage, and inside it is clean, cosy and well equipped with a modern TV, Wifi and all the kitchen appliances and equipment you would need. The two bathrooms both had plenty of hot water and good quality showers with decent water pressure. The pictures don't do the cottage justice either - the bed linen is newer for instance and the rooms are generally quite spacious and light. There are four bedrooms, 3 doubles and a twin, all with comfortable beds and stunning views over the estuary. Just along the beach is the Ferry Boat Inn and the Anchorstone Cafe. Both do great food and are very friendly. A (very steep) 5 minute walk up the hill is the Red Lion - which is a pub/coffee shop/cafe/village shop which stocks all the essentials. You can easily get a river taxi/ferry into Dartmouth, and in the evening we were able to get a regular taxi back fro about £14. I think we all fell in love with Smugglers Cottage and will be looking to book again very soon.
