“Serenity in Sri Lanka”

Reviewed 4 Feb 2016

Our stay at Sri Mathie Villa could not have been more wonderful. The owner David was incredibly helpful with the booking and gave us all kinds of advise about travel in Sri Lanka. He helped us with our itinerary - a meander from Colombo, to Kandy, up to Sigirya and then down to the south coast. We had wanted to do a safari too but didn't have enough time- we will just have to return again one day! Suba and Gamini, the villa staff, were utterly charming and looked after us perfectly. Their cooking was so good that we suggested they write and publish a cook book! Every morning they served up an amazing breakfast and Suba made us all kinds of delicious treats too - banana bread, avocado smoothies and cakes ....everyday. We felt very pampered indeed! Dulmeth, their little boy was adorable and we had some fun times drawing together. His masterpieces hang in our home here in Rhode Island :) And the dogs and the puppy.....what cuties! The Villa is stunning - a beautifully renovated old Sri Lankan property, with gorgeous polished black concrete floors, high ceilings and intricate woodwork and a lovely feeling of openness, with large double doors that bring the tropical outside in. The breezeway between the bedrooms and the main house is wonderful - the long koi pond and beautiful plantings make for a very serene setting in the midst of a jungle. One of things we loved most was the outdoor bathroom and shower in our master bedroom, where the monkeys and peacocks played in the palm trees high above us. The villa is nestled in an organic farm, a short tuk-tuk ride from the coast, which grows black pepper, mango, coconut, lemon, cinnamon, and all kinds of other spices. Suba gave us a great tour one morning which we thoroughly enjoyed. Suba and Gamini kindly took us by tuk- tuk to the local fish and vegetable markets to buy ingredients for diner one day and explained the healing properties of the produce. It was an fascinating education. There was only one supermarket that we came across out side of Colombo and everyone buys their food locally from markets and farm stands so its incredibly fresh. Our Tuk- Tuk expeditions took us to beautiful beaches close to the villa and further afield along the south coast. The water was a blissful temperature and there were some very good beachfront restaurants. We went to Galle a few times and had a terrific meal at the "Printing Press" on New Years Eve. It wasn't cheap but it was worth it. Mimi Mango and at Barefoot are great shops to buy gifts, beautiful fabrics and clothes. What else? I had a fantastic massage at the Ananda Spice Garden and we all took a boat ride from there around Koggala Lake- there is a beautiful temple on an island which is worth visiting - the added and very unexpected bonus was sitting on the dock there with our feet dangling into a pool of hungry little fish who proceeded to nibble our feet clean!! Strange but fun! All in all it was a trip of a life time. Sri Mathie and Sri Lanka should be on everyone's bucket lists!! We shall treasure our memories of our time there. Thank you to David and the Sri Mathie Family!

“An amazing Sri Lankan Sri mathie experience that we will remember for a long time to come”

Reviewed 4 Jan 2014

I wanted to have a Christmas holiday with my grown up globe trotting family and to do so we came together from three different continents at Sri Mathie villa . The villa is serenely beautiful and has been lovingly restored with style and imagination whilst preserving the traditional essence of a Sri Lankan villa. To say we had a wonderful time is an understatement. It has been the holiday experience of a lifetime, made all the more special by the wonderful warm hospitality of Suba and Gamine. Their kindness and willingness to do anything possible to make your stay a happy one knows no bounds, every special holiday needs a Suba and gamine. They are both amazing cooks...if you like good food this is the place for you. It has been a culinary extravaganza, sublime cuisine, wonderful curries, seafood and pizzas in an adobe garden oven, I think we have now tried every fruit and vegetable grown in Sri Lanka. And then there is the verandah ... From there you can watch monkeys , beautiful birds ,chipmunks ,bats and the occasional lizard and enjoy an evening gin and tonic...life doesn't get much better ! suman is seemingly always on hand to drive you where you want to go. My family really enjoyed the surf at welligama, the diving and snorkelling at Unawatuna and our safari trip. Outstanding, amazing and just plain awesome sums up our thoughts on Sri Mathie.
