Wistaria Cottage is a luxury three bedroom self-catering cottage on two floors with glorious sea views and is ideal for relaxing holidays, romantic breaks, short breaks and weekend breaks, family holidays or for a group of friends.
This cottage is within one of the oldest buildings at Downe with walls dating from the 18th Century and is perhaps the best located of all the cottages. It has a garden table and chairs located due west of the French windows that open from the living area. The view over the Atlantic Ocean is stunning and many late night dinners take place on summer nights as the sun sets in the west and lights up the sky.
The ground floor has an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area with French windows looking west out over the Atlantic and the master bedroom. The kitchen is fully equipped and includes a dishwasher, fridge/freezer, microwave, oven and washer-dryer; the living area has two large 3-seater sofas, a living flame electric fire, a 32" digital television with D.V.D player. The dining area has an antique pine table and six dining chairs. The master bedroom has a Queen size bed (5') and en-suite shower room with two bedside tables, chest of drawers, fitted wardrobe and a three quarters length mirror hung on the wall.
On the first floor there is a galleried landing and a further two bedrooms with sea views. Each bedroom has twin beds and en-suite shower rooms, two bedside tables, chest of drawers, fitted wardrobe and a three quarters length mirror hung on the wall.

New Gym facilities at Downe
Our gym is available to guests aged over sixteen and is open from 7.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m. each day during their stay.
The gym is beautifully located in the Atlantic Room and has views across fields out to Hartland Point and Lundy Island beyond. (Lundy Island is where the Atlantic meets the Bristol Channel.)
The gym is spacious, light and airy and equipped with aerobic equipment, free weights, an ab trainer, an exercise bench and exercise mats.
All of the aerobic equipment is either Life Fitness equipment
(including a treadmill, a cross trainer, a stepper, an upright cycle and a recumbent cycle) or Concept 11 equipment (a rower).
The gym is accessed through the Reading Room in the Conservatory. There is a raised area here overlooking the gym equipment with a seating for the less energetic to sit and admire their dynamic partners!
The Atlantic Room also houses a library and dvd collection for our guests to use.
French windows from the Gym lead out to a raised patio area with tables and chairs looking out to Lundy Island - another opportunity to enjoy the wonderful surroundings.

I have stayed in several of Lynda and Jeremy's cottages over the past few years. I have yet to find anywhere to stay on holiday that's so relaxing and relaxed. I am very particular when it comes to privacy, quiet and cleanliness but I never have to worry about anything when I go to Downe House. The Roes are the perfect hosts and nothing is ever too much trouble for them. Do go and visit!

A great cottage to escape to. The location was perfect for a week of biking around the countryside with plenty of good hills and breathtaking views on the doorstep. The cottage was extremely comfortable and very clean. A very well equipped cottage, almost everything for a home from home break. However, the cottage is for 6 and we were a group of 3 and struggled with such a small fridge/food storage facility. The freshly cooked food offered to order from the owners was a real treat and very good value. In addition, the small touches such as coffee/tea/chocolates/wine and bathroom toiletries on arrival were a real bonus. Unfortunately, one disappointment was the absence of a telephone, if only to receive incoming calls (this allows the guest to give a number out at their own discretion). There is next to no mobile reception in the cottage or immediate area or the offer of free wifi, which was extremely frustrating. Although the owners could take messages, i'm sure they wouldn't appreciate calls in the middle of the night from guests children/family members.
We did not use the spa facility on site, however, it all looked very nice. We would have used the gym, as we are avid gym users, however, having to prebook a workout was not convenient. It is usually a spontaneous decision and on the one morning we tried to gain access at 7.30am, we were unable to get in. Perhaps having it open between 6.30 and 10am and 4 and 9pm daily would see more usage, plus making it complimentary. Should you only wish to visit the jacuzzi or steam room in the spa, it was not value for money.
Overall though, a very good cottage is a superb location.

After 10 years of visiting Wistaria the efficient and friendly service has never varied.
In the cottage with its excellant facilities and all three bedrooms ensuite (which is very rare) and more than adequate kitchen one can feel at home.
A country location witha facinating coast line yet within easy reach of numerous visitor centres.
The thing we liked best is knowing what we are going to find upon arrival, the thing we liked least is leaving.
We as a group of golden oldies have been visiting for 10 years,11 visits, I think this in its self says an awful lot about wistaria

I stayed here with my family and friends for my hen weekend. We arranged the spa day through the hotel which was great, the only down side was that there is no pool but they do apparently have planning permission for one. The views are fantastic and the staff couldn't be more helpfu and friendly. We had arranged our meals which just needed heating up and these were lovely. I would definately stay here again.
