Getting around

Galle (Sinhalese: ගාල්ල; Tamil: காலி) is a major city in Sri Lanka, situated on the southwestern tip, 119 km from Colombo. Galle is the administrative capital of Southern Province, Sri Lanka and is the district capital of Galle District. Galle was known as Gimhathiththa before the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century, when it was the main port on the island. Galle reached the height of its development in the 18th century, during the Dutch colonial period. Galle is the best example of a fortified city built by the Portuguese in South and Southeast Asia, showing the interaction between Portuguese architectural styles and native traditions. Important natural geographical features in Galle include Rumassala in Unawatuna.

“Pet-friendly villa close to beach and town but away from hustle and bustle”

Reviewed 23 Nov 2018

I stayed at Villa Serenity with my dogs for almost a year and a half. The villa is very spacious and has a beautiful, well-kept garden that attracts a wide variety of beautiful birds, butterflies, bats, squirrels and the occasional monkey. The house itself is light and airy, I never really needed to turn on the air-conditioning, and has two large double bedrooms (one en-suite) and a smaller bedroom with two single beds. The living room is spacious with a large indoor pond with fish, which is a really nice feature of the house. The kitchen and dining area are also spacious and look out over the paddy fields. The house has a second family bathroom and a washing machine. Both bathrooms have a shower, toilet, bidet and basin and come with a hair dryer. The kitchen is also well equipped with a fridge / freezer, hob, oven, microwave, kettle and a wide range of pots, pans, dishes, glasses, etc. The veranda all around the house is lovely and it's a true pleasure relaxing in one of the chairs at the back of the house overlooking the paddy fields, especially if you're a bird lover because it's a treasure trove of beautiful birds! It was also a pleasure to watch the annual cycle of the paddy fields from sowing to harvesting. The house has all modern comforts, including WiFi, good mobile telephone reception and a safe-deposit box in the wall inside the wardrobe of the master bedroom, albeit that I never used it because I felt absolutely safe at the villa. Gunna the housekeeper is extremely friendly and the owner's family live next door and are also extremely friendly and always willing to help out and assist.Especially when you're trying to learn the local language! I used Victor, their recommended tuk-tuk driver, for most of my time at the villa. The house is situated on the outskirts of Hikkaduwa, it's about 700 yards from the nearest beach and about 1.5 miles to town. This is actually really nice because the house is in a very quite location, without the hustle and bustle of the busy tourist season and the weekend nightlife whilst you can still reach Hikkaduwa beach and town in about 10 minutes on foot. Supermarkets and weekly markets for fruit, vegetables and fish are close by and day trips to Galle, Hikkaduwa turtle sanctuary, and several other tourist attractions are easy to organise. It's also very easy to get to other places because the house is also within easy reach of the Southern Expressway (the Baddegama entry). I took advantage of this for day trips to Uda Walawe National Park, Bundala National Park, Sinharadja Rain Forest, etc. I also spent several weekends away at Yala National Park and Wilpattu National Park leaving the house (and my dogs) in the capable hands of Gunna the housekeeper. Nothing was ever stolen, I always came back to a perfectly cleaned and pleasant home. Gunna also prepared dinner for me and otherwise, if you don't want to cook yourself, there are many good restaurants and take-aways in the immediate vicinity of the house. The area around the house is also perfect for running and cycling, both of which I did a lot during my time at the villa. All in all, the villa offers quiet and peaceful day-to-day life in a beautiful setting at a lovely location close to beach and town without the hustle and bustle. When I return to Sri Lanka in the future I will definitely stay here again!

“A lovely place to stay”

Reviewed 16 Mar 2017

Situated outside of the main area of Hikkaduwa, Serenity Villa is perfect for those that want a less frantic holiday. The beach is about 1k away, which when we were there the sea was a bit rough, not good for young children, but perfect sands, quiet at our end but lots of beach facilities further into town. Do try going about by local transport. Tut tuts for local sights, buses for places like Galle, and trains for further afield. Amazing experiences. The people of Sri Lanka are most friendly, always willing to offer a guiding hand.
