Description from owner

Description

The world we like best to describe our rental was given to us by a visiting Welshman. He walked in and said, "Well, this is posh, isn't it?" Yes, it is. But it's a comfortable posh. A place to sit and relax. A place to make memories and come home to after a day of wonders. Wake up in the morning to watch the sky change the colors of the Caribbean and plan your days' adventures.

Isla Mujeres, Island of Women in the Mexican Caribbean minutes from Cancun. Once a pirate hideaway - now just as popular with vacationers!

You'll enjoy the Caribbean views and the privacy of the upstairs apartments. Designed for family visits, the space has everything you need to feel like you are at home... if your home happens to have gardens of tropical fruit and the Caribbean just steps from your front gate.

Perfect for a two couples or a family with school age or adult children. You'll find all the usual amenities waiting for you... plus gardens & fresh fruits and getting to watch dolphins and turtles swimming by!

The second floor patio, overlooking the Caribbean, is an outdoor living and dining space.

Sliding doors lead to the indoor living room with a flat screen cable TV, wireless internet and entertainment area. We think most of your time will be spent on the patio or deck enjoying the colors of the Caribbean... when you aren't busy discovering all that there is to do on such a tiny island!

There are queen size beds in both the second and third floor bedrooms, both with smart TVs.

The second floor kitchen area has a full fridge, a microwave, air fryer/oven, teapot, a coffee pot and plenty of other pots and kitchen essentials, but the local restaurants on Isla Mujeres are excellent and affordable. There's even a delivery service to bring your favorite restaurant food to you. You probably won't be cooking at home very much!

The 2 bathrooms have user-friendly hot showers with good water pressure... and an amazing view! Seriously. Look at the pictures! The area is just that beautiful.

There is a shared washer/dryer available downstairs on the back deck. You are on vacation and our washer is temperamental. If you leave your laundry in the mesh hamper at the bottom of the stairs, we’ll return it folded. The gas grill and charcoal grill on the deck are there for you to enjoy.

The gardens have oranges, papayas, limes, pomegranates, coconuts, bananas, and other fruit in season. There are some watermelon vines that have been growing fruit all winter. You are welcome to enjoy anything you find, if it's ripe. There is a little oasis space to lounge in a hammock.

We live in paradise. The number one house rule is to have fun. The number two rule is to have consideration. We have dogs and cats on the property. If you bring pets, we will need to do formal introductions and make sure they get along. Ours are used to guests so don't expect any problems.

One of the hosts is a smoker and we welcome other smokers... as long as you step outside to smoke. This is not a handicap friendly apartment. There are wonderful spiral stairs into the house and up to the apartment. The wrap around balcony has a beautiful spindle fence spaced wide enough to watch the turquoise waters of the Caribbeans... and to allow little ones to fall. The age limit we suggest is 8 to 10. You know your children. If you have a Mary Poppins who will attempt a flight with an umbrella, please don't tempt her!

The island is just 20 minutes from Cancun with all of the shopping and nightlife you've heard about. From Isla, you can go swimming with whale sharks or dive to explore an underwater museum. Take a charter out fishing and bring your catch to a local restaurant to have it cooked for dinner.

From the patio outside your door or the roof deck, watch the Caribbean sunrise and moonrise. Then enjoy the sunset. See all the beauty of the clear stunning blue Caribbean waters filled with giant turtles swimming or stopping to nest... dolphins playing... white sand beaches... a sun worshippers dream.

Tropical Caribbean sunsets are a photographer's delight. With no big city lights nearby in the Caribbean, the stars dance in the sky at night. The beaches on Isla are consistently voted in the top 10 - of the world! Live music, great restaurants, safe, clean... Paradise.

Isla Mujeres is only 5 miles long, but it is diverse! The North end has world class beaches and the noise of visitors having a wonderful time. Music floats from the restaurants ... Mexican, folk, blues, jazz, reggae, country... you'll hear it all mixed with laughing and talking and shop keepers shouting out offers as you walk by.

Further south are the local neighborhoods where the bustle of living, working and raising families mixes with the laughter and music of the people. Small shops hide good bargains and local restaurants offer all types of food that is locally sourced, safe to eat, cheap and incredibly delicious. A few high end restaurants can be found in the colonias and they are worth the trip! World class presentation and prep of local foods.

Here you'll find the Chedraui - Mexico's answer to Walmart! Be sure to stop in when the bakery is filling the store with mouth watering aromas! The round bundt cakes are the island's best kept secret! It's a great place to shop for souvenirs!

Keep going south and you move out of the crowded colonias to single homes on large lots with beautiful Caribbean views. The locals do call it Millionaire's Row, but many of the homes welcome renters for at least part of the year.

Our house... and your apartment... is on the Caribbean side. The quiet, south part of the island welcomes you to walk along the cliffs to the Temple of Ixchel open air art exhibit.

Stop at the cave of dawn where the waters are wild! Here the sun first touches Mexico each morning. Check out "little Garrafon" to explore the reef. You can see the fish without even stepping into the water!

Rent a golf cart or moto for your stay. The temps are usually in the 80s F - that's high 20s C, but can get as high as mid 90s (35C) on some hot summer days. Add the tropical humidity to the heat and biking and hiking stop being fun outdoor activities around noon. From November through May we usually have Temps in the lower 80s although on some winter days we might see it drop into the low 70s. Sounds warm to Northerners, but here in Isla it's warm clothing weather!

Early morning, evening and night you can walk or run or bike, but rent a golf cart or moto for enjoying the daytime!

Taxis will take you anywhere. When you get off the ferry look for taxis with POSTED RATES. Check the rates before you get in and pay what is posted. Tips are generally about 15 to 20%... more if the service really impressed you. If you find a great driver... take the number and call for a pickup when you need a taxi!

Buses run on a regular basis. The fare is $2 or $9 for an all day tourist pass. It's a fun way to tour around the island.

Getting around

Taxis are easy to find or rent a golf cart and explore on your own. We can give you numbers of drivers who will come out to the house to pick you up. There are beach clubs, great restaurants, the Joint with live music, kayaks, paddle boards and more within walking distance. The island is about a 1/2 mile - less than a kilometre wide - at it's widest point! If you want to see the ruins or visit a cenote, a local tour company will pick you up on the Cancun side of the ferry and drive you around.

Interaction with guest

We are native New Yorkers. Until we moved to Isla we have always lived in apartments. We are fine with friendly neighbors as well as neighbors who would rather not chat. We are downstairs if you need anything. If you have questions about where to eat or who to go diving with, we can help. If you want to pretend we are not around, we make that easy. We are outgoing introverts. You define how much interaction you want. We have extra bottled water and linens. If you are missing a spice in the kitchens, chance are that we have it and are happy to share.
