About Netanya

Before 1929, Netanya was just a patch of sand. It took just two decades to become Israel’s first city, and is the capital of the Sharon Plain.

Just 30km north of Tel Aviv – the capital of Israel – Netanya is a buzzing and vibrant city, full of excitement.

It is currently Israel’s seventh largest city and has a large English speaking population thanks to the number of immigrants living there way back when. Find out who they were and more about the city’s history at the popular Netanya Museum.

Tourism is pretty big here, thanks to British architect Cliff Holliday who, in 1933, decided Netanya would become a tourist location. His legacy continues today as thousands flock here each year to enjoy the hot Israeli sunshine.

What to do in Netanya

There are the wonderful beaches, of course, where you can while away a whole day. Visit during the spring and summer months to make the most of the sunshine!

Netanya is known as the home of paragliding in Israel, thanks to the decent cliffs and a strong offshore breeze. So, if you’re feeling adventurous, give it a go!

Stroll along the lengthy and colorful promenade or people watch from one of the many cafes or restaurants (there is cuisine from around the world to sample).

Later, go and see a concert in the nearby 1200-seat amphitheater and towards the end of the night watch the sun set over the Med.

The main shopping district in the center of the town is where you can watch street musicians and shop both morning and night.

If you’re a fan of flowers and the Iris, then you’ll want to go to the Poleg nature reserve. The Irises Dora Rainpool within contains the world’s largest population of this lovely bloom. There’s also an amazing abundance of other flora and fauna green-fingered tourists definitely won’t want to miss.
