Description

A country-style house extended to provide comfortable and spacious accommodation for 7 people. Both the kitchen/diner and the sitting room are a good size with TV/video/CD and DVD players + English Sky Freeview. Modern kitchen with all modern appliances. 3 bedrooms - 2 doubles; 1 triple plus bathroom and shower room, large terrace with ample garden furniture; An acre plus of grounds; local shop a few minutes walk; 5 minute drive to Chateauneuf du Faou with supermarkets, selection of shops and restaurants, boat hire, swimming pool.

The house is well placed for visits to medieval Quimper, both bathing and surfing beaches, spectacular walks and the main Southern Brittany Tourist attractions.

Further details indoors

There are 3 bedrooms (2 double, 1 triple), 2 bathrooms (1 refitted December 2016 bath with shower and shower screen, washbasin and wc, which serves 1 double and the triple room, and 1 with a large shower, washbasin and wc which is adjacent to the master bedroom accessed up a separate flight of stairs from the sitting room). The spacious kitchen diner has a modern fitted kitchen including electric multi function oven, induction hob, microwave, warming drawer, fridge/freezer and dishwasher.

The dining table comfortably seats 7 and there is a TV with English Sky freeview channels, a DVD player (a selection of DVDs) plus additional comfortable seating. The large sitting room has a wood burning stove for which there is an ample supply of logs in the barn. The house has oil fired central heating and is double glazed throughout. The modern boiler is in the basement together with a washing machine and additional sink. The house has WI-Fi and Broadband access.

The village shop is a short walk away and provides all basic necessities including, of course, French bread and croissants. A more extensive range can be obtained from the nearby town of Chateauneuf du Faou which has 2 large supermarkets, a regular weekly market (Wednesday), a visiting fishmonger (outside Le Clerc on Fridays) and a choice of restaurants ranging from Pizzarias to the Relais de Cornailles which appears in the Michelin Guide. There is a child's playground (newly built in 2019) in the village. There is fishing in the river and boats can be hired in Chateauneuf near the indoor swimming pool.

Beaches are easily accessible - both gentle bathing to the south (about half an hour) and some of Europe's best surfing beaches to the west (about 45 minutes).
The historic town of Quimper on the River Odet is within easy reach and a little further will take you to the elegant seaside resort of Benodet (river cruises link the two). Not to be missed are the port of Concarneau with its wonderful medieval Ville Close, and the lovely estuary town of Pont Aven, famed for its artists and one time home of Paul Gaugin.

Walking in Brittany is spectacular, ranging from Atlantic cliff-top walks round the Crozon Peninsular and woodland and river rambles. Guide books and maps at the house contain extensive information about places to visit and walks. The ever-growing “Hollen Book of Knowledge” contains tips on fishing, trips and local guides as well as favoured restaurants, bird sanctuaries, expeditions and adventure parks.

Further details outdoors

French windows lead from the sitting room onto the large terrace. The house is set in over an acre of ground (mostly laid to lawn) with slopes and a flat area for games with a wooded boundary to the north. There is a large gravelled area for parking at the bottom of the drive.

“Une très mauvaise expérience”

Reviewed 7 Sep 2020

When we arrived in the house, we were very disappointed: - the surroundings were a derelict (terrace covered with leaves and plant debris). - the house was dirty (cobwebs, kitchen furniture full of traces of spills, dirty crockery...) - the house has a real humidity problem. All the furniture smelled damp. Even with the dehumidifier on 24 hours a day and the house aired as soon as the temperature allowed it, it smelled musty. - The photos on tripadvisor date from the time of the renovation of the house at least 15-20 years ago. - no proper garden furniture (old table, no parasol, sun beds all mouldy in the cellar...) In short, we really did not have a good holiday here.

“Great setting and house...with a couple of possible improvements...”

Reviewed 1 Aug 2020

To start with, the house is really nice and the setting is great. Hollen is an arcing road in Saint Thois, a quiet little town, moments from the Nantes-Brest canal and its fabulous hiking/biking paths. This house is a great location for exploring the interior of Finistere but still just 30 to 40 minutes from the ocean. There are good creperies and restaurants all over in neighbouring towns like Chateauneuf de Faou, Chateaulin, Pleyben etc. but some are closed due to Covid and so it is worth verifying hours. Owners are responsive and helpful. Just two things were a bit of a downer for us: There is a new gas BBQ and its (rightly) disconnected gas bottle in the shed. Trouble is getting it out of there and down a steep set of loose stone steps or an uneven earthen path...not so easy for a 76 year old whose knees are older than the rest of him. Sadly and frankly, we found the cleaning lacking and so advised the owner but our request for a refund on it was denied. In fact denied, in part, as she wrote to us, because there was extra cleaning because of Covid. We saw what we saw. There was dirt on the wood floors, dust devils and cobwebs in corners, smudges on the master bathroom mirror, food stains on the oven door glass and a very musty comforter on the second bedroom's bed. Clearly the owner did not think it was an issue of consequence and that is her right. All told we would still recommend the house to others as its spaces are excellent, its kitchen is first rate and its setting is restful, quiet and near-perfect.. This review would have had a 5/5 if not for the cleaning.

“Excellent Holiday Home”

Reviewed 4 Jun 2019

We had a lovely stay at Hollen. It was in a beautiful quiet spot on the edge of the quiet village of St Thois which had a very good little shop/ café for general groceries. Chateauneuf du Faou is nearby with some good restaurants. We would recommend Le Chaland which is down by the river. It does very good pizzas in a stunning location. You are also easily in driving distance of many tourist spots and beaches. We liked Concarneau and Quimper is lovely. The cottage is lovely and well equipped. It has everything you could possibly need.

Response from the owner All matters referred to in the last two reviews have now been addressed, and action taken where necessary. The old CD player has been removed but the DVD player under the tv also plays CDs. Access to the Internet has been simplified. The double bed in the old part of the house is an IKEA double bed. All crockery and kitchen utensils have been carefully checked for cleanliness With regard to comments about the garden, there had been heavy rain which made it impossible to cut the grass. This has now been done and cutting back has been completed where necessary. Our two most recent guests have commented on how good it looks. With regard to the garden being "sloped", I believe this is clear from the photos.
