Description from owner

Description

We converted Golden Square Cottage from an old dairy in 2012. The cottage was designed to make the most of the amazing views from our hill top position. The view from the bedrooms and the large private deck are really special.

Finished to a high standard, with every detail carefully thought out. We've tried to be as environmentally friendly as possible, installing solar panels to provide hot water, using responsibly sourced wood for the windows and doors made by a local craftsman, and using eco friendly paints and finishings wherever possible. The cottage is updated and painted where needed seasonally to keep it upto the standard of when it was converted.

We run a smallholding, so you are welcome to spend some time with us helping to feed the animals and collect the eggs. Our small flock of friendly Shetland sheep are in our field and sometimes in the orchard below the cottage to keep the grass down. We have three Pigmy Goats that have moved onto the orchard that love a tickle. The chicken generally free range around the farm and can be seen roaming around looking for snacks. We can show you where to go to watch the badgers at the end of our woods, and give you books to read all about the amazing wildlife on our doorstep. Swallows nest in the barn next to the cottage and Wagtails nest in our log stores. We normally raise rare breed pigs but after a water leak their area needs a rest for a year, they will be back in 2021.

Further details indoors

Downstairs shower, wc and handbasin with heated towel rail. Both bathrooms beautifully fitted with neutral tiles and great attention to detail.

Large beautifully finished kitchen with breakfast table. Electric cooker with grill and oven, fridge with freezer compartment, dishwasher, washer/drier, microwave. All newly fitted to a very high standard. Lots of storage and every utensil you could need.

Large living/dining room. One large comfortable new sofa. Two armchairs. Pretty cushions. Flat screen TV, freeview, DVD player and Xbox. Selection of games and DVD's. Lovely Laura Ashley rug. Wooden dining table and chairs up-cylced in Farrow and Ball. Good selection of toys games and books available for young and old. Pushchair and bicycles available to borrow on request.

Further details outdoors

A large private deck with wooden table and chairs and a parasol ensure you can make the most of the amazing views and beautiful setting.

A Gas BBQ is provided (we also have a charcoal BBQ if you prefer) on the decking area, along with a home made picnic bench in the orchard below the deck. Enjoy exploring our woodlands and the common land that adjoins our farm, where you can look out for the deer, badgers and owls that live there.

By walking across the field with our flock of Shetland sheep, you can reach a stile that leads into our woods. From there you can join up with a truly magical footpath leading down a small gully crisscrossed with pretty wooden bridges - a really idillic spot. The footpath leads down towards the Stockland turbaries, a large area of common land that has some unique habitats to explore. It's a nature loves paradise - endless opportunities for exploring, playing, climbing trees and hunting for bugs and other wildlife.

Getting around

The cottage is located in a rural farming area and as such there are few buses that service this location, the local towns of Honiton and Axminster have mainline train station. A car is recommended but the cottage is located on the Buzzard cycle route so great for keen cyclists.

Interaction with guest

Guest staying at the cottage are welcome to come and meet our animals with us and give them some snacks and to roam around our field and woodland looking for the amazing wildlife. Our woodland backs on to the common woodland, with footpaths to explore, where you'll also see deer, owls and other great wildlife.
