Description

Location
Hawthorn Cottage is a pretty, cosy cottage nestled in the foothills of the Sperrin Mountains in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, in a designated 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'. This old Blacksmith's cottage is situated close to the small village of Greencastle, a short 3-4 minute stroll from the local Costcutter Supermarket , Eddie's Pub and Mountain View Equestrian Riding School. It has recently been renovated and has every modern amenity you would hope for as well as an open turf fire! A haven 'away from it all', Hawthorn Cottage is still only a short drive from historic sites and places of interest, including Davagh Forest Mountainbiking Track(opening March 2013), The Gortin Glens Forest Park and The Ulster American Folk Park which is one of Northern Ireland's top tourist attractions. The local archaeological sites include the Aughascribba Ogham Standing Stone which is within walking distance and the ancient stone circles at Beaghmore which are only a 15 minute drive away as are a number of anciental wedge tombs. The surrounding rugged countryside provides plenty of opportunity for those who enjoy walking or cycling or simply want to take in the natural beauty of the area.
We are only a day trip from The Giants Causeway and North Antrim coast, the historic walled city of Derry(UK City of Culture 2013), The Lakes of Fernanagh, the vibrant city of Belfast with its newly opened Titanic Quarter and County Donegal with its unspoilt beaches, bays and headlands.
Facilities
Hawthorn Cottage is cosy and warm. It has two bedrooms, one bathroom, living room, kitchen and utility room. The cottage sleeps 4-6 people.
The master bedroom has a king-size bed and wash stand. The second bedroom contains two single beds and an extra pull out bed. The sitting room has a double sofa-bed and an open turf fire, TV-DVD player and plenty of books and games.
The kitchen has a dishwasher, fridge/freezer, large cooker and family dining table. The utility room has a washing machine, dryer, microwave and ironing facilities. The bathroom is spacious and has a roll-top bath, heated towel rail and a separate power-shower.
There is a garden to the rear containing garden furniture and fruit trees.
If you like eggs for breakfast, our friendly hens are only too happy to provide – but watch out for the rooster!
We hope you can wind your way to our cottage door and spend a relaxing holiday or short break at our cottage – where a very warm welcome awaits you!

“Wow- Wonderful Cottage!”

Reviewed 14 Aug 2022

Hawthorn Cottage was such a much needed haven of rest. Situated in a lovely quiet location (but a mere 5 min dander to the local Centra). The cottage is beautifully decorated with lovely exposed beams. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need and features a wonderful gas aga styled stove. In the utility room is a washing machine and tumble dryer, along with a microwave. Outside there’s a beautiful fatten table and chairs for sitting with your morning coffee or to enjoy the evening sun too. There’s a beautiful raised rustic garden and of course the wonderful chicken coop. The chickens love a wee chat and you are free to enjoy their freshly laid eggs. But that’s not all- you also have access to a lovely old white washed cottage in which there’s a table tennis table for a bit of fun. The owners (Martin and Catriona) are wonderful and couldn’t do enough to make our stay so enjoyable. Super friendly and approachable, not to mention the lovely welcome pack awaiting us on the kitchen table (huge French fancies, homemade jam, fresh crusty loaf and a bottle of wine). Hawthorn Cottage is a true hidden gem and a perfect place for a relaxing get away. Lots to do in the surrounding area and so much beautiful scenery - we got to experience it all during the glorious hot weather too.

“Nothing short of stunning”

Reviewed 6 Apr 2018

We were met with a bottle of wine on the kitchen table with a selection of fruit. Once we had settled in Catriona arrived with freshly cooked bread which was delicious.. The pictures on trip advisor don't do this property justice, which is a good thing, as we were so surprised firstly with the size of the property.. We had 2 adults and 3 children ( 14, 9 & 21 months). Secondly the decor of the property is 1st class and the turf fire (blazing on arrival) sets the mood.. Only 15 minutes from omagh this property give you privacy but isn't in the back end of beyond. Greencastle village is a 3 min walk away with a fully stocked shop, a very friendly pub and Gino in the little cafe/takeaway, the green room, which has a great menu and lovely pizzas to take away (closed on tue). Back to the cottage, kids loved the luxury bathroom and the big kitchen/utility gave the wee man plenty of room to run about and tire himself out. I could go on and on about how lovely this place is, best thing to do is to check it out for yourselves.. when we were packing up to leave I asked the two eldest kids if they had any complaints, they both had just one, that we couldn't have stayed longer. I met Martin shortly before leaving.. A lovely gentleman who knew and holidayed as a child in my village of rostrevor.. I enjoyed our chat very much.. All the best Guys this truly is a wee gem in beautiful scenery of Tyrone.. We are already planing our return.
