“So much fun!”

Reviewed 10 Apr 2014

We visited San Juan de la Vega with our 4 children and another family of friends. I can´t say enough wonderful things about staying at this beautiful hacienda. Fun activities for everyone all day long! We were surrounded by nature, a peaceful environment, and assisted by the kindest people with every detail to make our stay unforgettable. Our children had the opportunity to experience life at the countryside at its fullest. Horse back riding, fetching fresh eggs, harvesting organic vegetables and even cow milking! Adults enjoyed sitting by the fireplace, cooking in the beautifully equipped kitchen and taking long, tranquil walks. Being only a two hour drive from the city of Quito, it makes a great destination to come back any time, even on any regular weekend. Janine and David are great hosts, always willing to help and come by for a nice chat. They have really thought of every detail, from fluffy pillows to fun games for the children to play. Hopefully, we will come back again soon! We are telling all our friends about this accessible yet magnificent experience for great family fun!

“Awesome family vacation!”

Ecuador is a great family destination and our stay at San Juan de la Vega was fantastic! We were two families (4 adults 5 kids) and had ample space in the house. We made great use of the well stocked kitchen, and made awesome meals with the fresh vegetables from the garden and Otavalo Market! The grounds were an amazing place for the kids and the adults, we had a lot of fun walking in the stream up to the waterfalls. The kids enjoyed their first horseback rides and discovered the beauty of a fresh garden. Janine was a pleasure to deal with when planning our trip and meeting her and her husband was extremely pleasant. Their staff is first rate. Veronica and Darwin made sure we lacked for nothing by keeping the house and grounds impeccably clean, arranging horseback rides, hike on Imbabura (we saw condors!) and even babysitting. Be sure to enjoy a meal cooked by Veronica, she is an excellent cook. Janine set us up with a driver for the week (Wilmer) who was friendly and reliable. As an added bonus, he is a natural guide and would even help keep an eye on our kids at the market. Ask him to take you to eat cuy! The only warning I could mention is to not expect too much comprehension of English. That being said, none of us spoke spanish, but we still got by very well with the basic spanish we learned in preparation for this vacation due the kind and patient nature of the ecuadorian people. Lastly, we were impressed to by the speed of the Wifi, it was as fast our Wifi in Montreal (very useful for google translate!) We have rented many great vacation homes, but San Juan de la Vega really stands in a class of its own because it is a destination in itself!

“Spectacular location, the house is luxurious and immaculate - ev”

You drive down a rutted road, past the high walls of a few famous old world haciendas, you glimpse a lush, green valley and, yes, that's where you are staying. It's a gorgeous valley surrounded by mountains one of which is a volcano and the view down the valley is a lovely lake. Picturesque. The house is marvelous. Big dining room, generous kitchen with a fully stocked pantry that you could live from for weeks. But don't because there is marvelous food that you can shop for in town and the garden produces many delicious meals. Upstairs and downstairs fireplaces give you cozy warmth and each morning and evening the fireplaces are lit for you. The beds are beyond luxurious with wonderful down quilts to keep the high altitude chill away. Rubber boots in every size are provided for tramping around the farm. You can visit the garden, ride the horses, milk the cows, hike or run the nearby trails. Veronica is a marvelous cook. She and her husband Darwin run one of the two farms located at the San Juan de la Vega. Darwin took us riding. We had family soccer games with our neighbor guests. Janine answered our every question. We practiced our Spanish with a very patient Veronica. We would have been happy to stay for weeks and weeks. So much to do right there and lots to do nearby. It seemed more like a resort than a house rental. Janine and David are caring and thoughtful hosts. We can't wait to return.

“Heaven in Earth !!”

My husband and I were traveling in Ecuador and were so happy to have the pleasure of staying at the beautiful Hacienda San Juan dela Vega ~ The most beautiful property nestled up under luscious mountains ~ There is horsebackriding up to the mountains for the gorgeous view of San Pablo Lago ( lake) or just walking around the vast acreage looking at all the flowers ~ All of the Haciendas on the property are absolutely fabulous ~ The owners Janine and David have truly outdone themselves with providing their guest all the 5 star comforts you can imagine ~ There are several caretakers on property willing to cook meals for you in you like ~ There is plenty of room for large families or even for family reunions, ladies retreats, or corporate retreats ~ You are only 5 minutes away from beautiful San Pablo Lago (lake) but believe me you will not want to leave once you arrive at this Heavenly Place ~ We cannot wait to return ~

“Peaceful Retreat”

First, the owners could not be more charming, understanding, and accommodating. The wife is american and he is Ecuadorian, so they understand what each culture of traveler needs in a hacienda stay. Second, what they offer is hard, if not impossible, to find in Ecuador. They occupy 100 coveted acres of meadow land, tucked away back in the foothills of the andes mountains, in a valley surrounded by pine/eucalyptus forests, and it even has a running stream through the property. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, they maintain 7 horses for guests to use, chickens for fresh eggs, turkeys, ducks, geese, a couple of friendly dogs, who are eager to go exploring with you, an organic garden, where you can get many of the fixings for your meals, and endless trails to discover the countryside. Not to be outdone, the home renovations are meticulously done. They have spared little expense from the lovely sheets, pillows, and down duvet bed coverings to the handpainted walls in each room, not to mention stylish furnishings and furniture. When we arrived, there were fresh flower arrangements in every single room and hallway. Roses, hydrangeas, calalillies, and many I could not name. Some are from a nearby rose plantation and the rest came from their beds around the house. The kitchen comes fully equipped and they even stock the pantry and let you use their supplies until you can get to the store for your own stuff. You pay on the honor system for what you use, which also tells you what kind of owners you are dealing with. Some nights we cooked and others we chose to have their on-site staff surprise us with some more typical Ecuadorian dishes, but they could cook many other international dishes as well (we had Peruvian chicken one night and it was excellent). This is a must on any travelers list, if you want to see the unspoiled beauty of Ecuador. Plus, the multiple houses make it perfect for family retreats, getaways with friends, or even business functions.

What a surprise! The pictures here are beautiful - but do even begin to display the majesty of this piece of paradise. The owners were most gracious and the caretakers are wonderful. We enjoyed a horse back ride with Darwin, had Veronica cook with us, walked the grounds, relaxed in the cool mountain air, and took great photos of all of the vegetation. I love the "honestry" pantry where we could "shop" for the things we forgot to pick up at the store.
