“Absolute peace and quiet - perfectly tranquil”

Reviewed 8 Sep 2010

We enjoyed a 3 night break in Vine Cottage and would recommend it without hesitation. The location is perfect for a relaxing 'away from it all' break. The cottage was beautifully clean and had absolutely everything to make our short break enjoyable. We ordered a meal from the 'in-house menu' on one evening and would certainly recommend eating in at least once. The food was excellent. Jeremy welcomed us and showed us around the cottage and then we were left to enjoy our holiday. Both Lynda and Jeremy really want their guests to enjoy the area and the cottages. We didn't try the spa, simply because there were so many places we wanted to visit and didn't find time to use the facilities provided. So refreshing to find a cottage which ticks all the boxes.

“Relaxing stay in Vine Cottage at Downe Farm.”

We stayed 4 nights over august Bank Holiday and were thoroughly impressed. Jeremy and Lynda were friendly and welcoming and the cottage was one of the cleanest and best prepared we've ever stayed in. Fantastic location and the views over the hills to the sea were amazing. The Spa was a great added bonus and the staff there were professional and friendly. We'd certainly come again and in fact will likely do so next year. Tony & Bev.

“Delightfully relaxing.”

Charming cottage in tranquil surroundings. Attention to detail was exceptional and the service efficient and unobtrusive. A most relaxing and enjoyable stay.

“Very relaxing and enjoyable”

A quiet and secluded location in a lovely area. High spec accommodation with the added advantage of a spa, which I can recommend!. Loved the wood-burning stove as the evenings were a bit cool despite it being august. Jeremy and Lynda are charming and nothing phases them - even when our washing machine failed, use of another was immediately offered! The very detailed guide compiled by them and left in the cottage was packed with lots of insights ... where to eat, things to do. Very useful.

“Tranquility at its best!”

I stayed at Vine Cottage for a 2 night pamper break & thoroughly enjoyed every minute! The location and accomodation are beautiful in what I believe is a very unique set up - beautiful old cottages surrounding a courtyard. The peace & quiet is only rarely interrupted by the odd car or tractor and you start to relax from the minute you arrive. Your cottage is kitted out with everything you could possibly need, from books & useful maps of the area, to everything you need in the kitchen and there is a even a proper full size hair dryer to plug in, not the rubbish thing attached to the wall you often get in hotels! The meals provided are delicious and the fact that you heat & eat them in your cottage means you can take your time & eat each course at your leisure. The spa is a haven of relaxation & the beauty treatment I had was second to none, with a very friendly & helpful therapist. I cannot rate this place hightly enough, I'll be recommending to all my friends & definitely going back again myself.

“A haven of peace and tranquility”

Just returned from out 3rd visit to Downe Cottages, this time staying in Vine Cottage which is now our favourite. Very light and airey with lovely views over the garden- a perfect retreat for two. The cottages are very well equipped and are so quiet and peaceful in a beautiful setting and location (once you have navigated the narrow lanes from Hartland!). We have stayed in a number of cottages in the UK and these are definitely the nicest so far. The only slight downside is that there is nowhere within walking distance for good food although the Hoops Inn at Bucks Cross on the a39 was excellent when we visited. The local pub is okay but we weren't thrilled and thought it was quite pricey for what it delivered. We didn't have time to try the meals from the 'cottage delivery service' as we were out and about rather a lot. The cakes and cream teas at the Cheriston Lavender Farm are excellent and within a short walking distance of Downe. Well worth a visit. The cream teas at Stoke Barton Farm are also lovely and only a short drive away. All in all a wonderful week despite, at times, some rather disappointing weather.

“Good chill out!”

We spent a week at Downe Cottages in June and really enjoyed our stay. The self catering cottage (Vine Cottage) was very clean and homely and had a well equipped kitchen. The site itself was very picturesque with beautiful views, wildlife and gardens. We saw beautiful sun sets from our cottage and relaxed in the spa which we had exclusive use of one evening. Jeremy and Linda were very personable hosts, helpful and friendly. They also provided excellent and very competitive three course meals which were of a very high standard (especially the curry). These were much appreciated particularly on our arrival when the meal was there already waiting for us to simply put in the oven. There are also many places to walk to in the area, including Hartland Quay, the village of Hartland and Cheristow Lavender Farm (who do good food). We hope to return to Downe Cottages again in the future as we enjoyed our stay.

“A lovely relaxing weekend”

A beautiful cottage with excellent facilities. I can also throughly recommend the cream tea on offer in the adjoining spa!
