“Incredible Stay!”

Reviewed 30 Apr 2013

We had a fantastic stay at this lovely villa! The house is perfect with ample space and great entertainment area's and awesome kitchens. The staff were fantastic and made our holiday that much better - The guard Perrier was great, he appeared whenever we needed help and made life very easy for us. He even cut us fresh coconuts from the garden every morning, and on request showed us all the fruit/spice tree's in the garden. The cleaning lady was delightful and cooked some spectacular dishes for us. And the Manager Ruzaik ahmed was always available - day or night to assist and organise transport, translate and answer any questions we had. I would recommend the villa for groups wishing to kick back and enjoy the south coast at their own pace! Thank you so much! We would love to visit again sometime in the future!

Response from the owner Hello Alex, thank you for your words of praise for our villa which we do love in deed! You have been able to appreciate the simplicity of the place and the friendliness of the villa personnel. We would love to have you as a guest in the near future and thank for your comments. Maruz

“"At home" In Polhena”

Reviewed 27 Jan 2013

Our family is spread across the globe, separated by time and space. Twice a year we all need to be together. The house in Polhena was perfect for our reunion. We loved the outdoor living and dining "rooms" in a gorgeous and very spacious garden setting, surrounded by green, and with the rhythm of the pounding surf as background music. We love to cook, and even though the indoor kitchen is very spacious, we moved the gas stove into the "outdoor kitchen" and even did our meal preparation outdoors. There were six of us, and the young people had the three bedrooms in the house, very comfortable, each with its own bath and door to the garden outside. My wife and I stayed in the "little house" in the corner of the garden, with its own bath, kitchen and terrace. It has a very large bedroom with an extra bed in it. The entire villa could easily support two families, 10 persons, or 4 couples. There is no air conditioning, but the fact is, we spent most of our time outdoors except for sleeping. There are ceiling fans in the bedroom and at the end of December, that was just fine. The house is on the sea, at the end of a dirt road, no other development around it, so it was very isolated and very quiet. We took tuk-tuks into town to do our grocery shopping, and to the fish market every morning for fresh fish, squid, shrimp, and lobster. Everything we needed was available in town. Spectacular beaches like Mirissa and Talalla are also within tuk-tuk distance and we enjoyed those on most days. We were able to rent a van and driver to go farther afield to explore the country, Galle, for example. If you are expecting a five star resort, this is not it. No one brings you breakfast or washes your dishes. But, if you are looking for a home away from home, an exotic setting, a house with character and charm where you can spend time with family or friends without disturbances of any kind, this is for you!

“cricket in a coconut grove, local markets, friendly staff...”

Reviewed 1 May 2011

We were in Sri Lanka recently during the Sri Lankan new year time. I can easily say our stay at this beautiful beach house was the highlight of otherwise a hectic 2 week trip to Sri Lanka. Despite it being the hottest time of the year we did not feel the heat because of the sea breeze. House had a rustic feel to it with asian and Mediterranean touches, comfortable furniture and decorated tastefully with what appears to be mostly local products. We especially enjoyed the hammocks and the outdoor shower. It had enough room to accommodate our party of 10. We spent our days lounging, playing cricket, exploring nearby markets and of course eating. Nirmala who is avaialble to hire as a maid during the day was an excellent cook. We were able to find local produce and fresh fish easily at the Matara market and Nirmala cooked them to perfection. Many of us in our group loved to cook and we had all the utensils we needed and beautiful tableware to serve them. We did not brave the ocean by the house but Polhena beach was easy walking distance from the house. Mr Perera was always there to open the gate and was a reassuring presence at night. He even caught us a crab. Mr ahmed was there to meet us on arrival and seemed to be a very nice person. They all spoke very fondly of the owners. As many of you know the owner Emanuela is Italian and there were basil plants in the backyard that seem to have survived the heat. The dogs were friendly and Mickey in particular accompanied us on our walks to the beach. Emanuela, your house was pretty close to what I had in mind when I was looking for a beach vacation rental and the wonderful staff you have there made it the perfect vacation. Thank you for a wonderful stay. I am sure I will be thinking of your beautiful house by the beach during long cold winters here.

“A very special house in the coconut groves!”

Reviewed 31 Mar 2011

This is a very beautiful house in an incredibly friendly village with a little private beach set in the palm trees. We were so well looked after by the guardian of the house (and the beautiful dogs!) and we would love to keep coming back here again and again! It the most relaxing experience and felt like a real home away from home in a very special part of Sri Lanka. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

“Beach life, tranquility and feeling like a local”

Reviewed 22 Mar 2011

Staying a Emanuela's place opened our eyes to the real Sri Lanka. Being in this little paradise close to beautiful beaches, a Dutch colonial town, a bird sanctuary and fascinating markets all within minutes from the house by bicycle. We were able to mingle with the locals and at the same time keep our privacy. No where else in Sri Lanka did we relax so much and at the same time get a real understanding of the people and country. The house and garden are beautiful and the owners are a delight.

“A delightful escape”

Reviewed 28 Sep 2010

Now at a distance of a few months later our week long stay here at the beginning of august 2010 seems like a dream. The house is both beautiful and comfortable with its mix of asian and Mediterranean styles. The caretaker Pereira who looks after the house is cordial and very efficient and the convenience of having a daily maid in a private house is great. The sea in front of the house is rich with fish that we easily caught and did up on the barbecue. We love calm transparent water so this location was ideal for us, protected as it is by the coral barrier. Nearby in the village of Polhena there are beautiful sites to visit and the city (Matara, walkable from Polhena, but you can use the bike to get there quicker) offers whatever you might desire from pharmacies to hospitals to a supermarket to a local market selling fish, fruit and vegetables. It is truly a relaxing destination to get away from it all, while still having access to the things you need to keep you connected to the outer world.

“peaceful bay”

Reviewed 22 Aug 2010

We have visited the "My Friend Your Wife's House” for several times during our trips in Sri Lanka. In 2010, we stayed in the "House” in February and in august. The place was refurbished and it was even better than in the past. The house can be compared to a charm peaceful hotel, it is located right at the seaside, rooms are 'essential' and very comfortable, each with own bathroom. It is surrounded by a big garden and has a great view of the bay. The garden is marvelous, with lots of flowers, fruits, shadows and constant music of the sea. Eagles are flying in the sky, hunting in the bay. We enjoyed very much swimming in front of the house, especially at the sunset, when the sky turns red. The town and shops are at 'bicycle' distance and, occasionally, when we needed something extra, Pereira, the guardian, was ready to help. Despite he does not speak English well, he was very careful and efficient. (Jolka and Giampiero)

“Come swim with the turtles,,,,,”

Reviewed 5 Mar 2010

Nandi and I stayed at Polhena house for 18 months after the Tsunami in 2005 we worked with several different NGOs in the two and a half years spent in Sri Lanka. There was lots of rebuilding being done at the house and in the village, that time has now passed and I would recommend a stay here to anyone wanting to get away from "5 star" hotels and be a bit more independent and back to nature. We loved the shady garden and would happily spend weekends pottering and swimming in the bay. We often swam with turtles only a few metres from the shore outside the house. I enjoyed shopping for vegetables and fish at the markets in town although there is also a Cargills supermarket too (bad for veg). Polhena house would make a great base for up to five couples to share, each bedroom having en-suite shower and toilet. There is a large communal kitchen that then leads up to the terrace on the first floor for dining and drinks. The train from Colombo ends at Matara and is probably the best way to travel down the coast, cheapest too (Sri Lankan car and bus drivers are hair raising at best). Then negotiate a three wheeler to take you the last ten mins to the house. Ruzaik (local landlord) can arrange mini bus tours and Yala game park is well worth it. We went four times while we were there, take a bird book and bins' then tell the driver to stop when you want. A fleeting glimpse of a leopard is all you will see. The birds were best by far. Back at the house over 18 months we saw turtles, peacocks, monitor lizards, land crabs, snakes, scorpions, gekos, squirrels, woodpeckers, sea eagles, herons. We planted tomatoes, french beans, and sweet basil when we were there, the basil had begun to self seed before we left. The dogs will also want to go for a walk around the village with you. Jake is the boy, rosie the girl, oliver was the spotty white cat (he always wants more!) Have a great time when you go and enjoy the swimming, Steve Hall

“Great place”

Reviewed 5 Mar 2010

We were in Matara for the last Christmas Holiday. It started with a warm welcome. We felt home immediately. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. In the garden we found a lot of fruit and herbs for cooking. The place is very private. No neighbors, and no beach boys who bother you during the sunbathing. What is rare in Polhena, but very good for a family with 3 teenage daughters. Even at night there is a night watcher. So we felt safe and pampered day and night. From the garden we had an excellent view over the Ocean with amazing sun sets. There is a bicycle for shopping. Which is great because the supermarket is just a few kilometers from the house. We were very happy with the house keeper. She did all the cleaning and cooking. So we had the feeling to be in an hotel, but with the privacy as it was our own house. She prepared great Sri lankan dishes. We are still talking about her sambals, and she prepares the best tea, we every had. It’s a place I can recommend to every body. We are looking forwards to our next visit. Paradise does exist.

then do not hesitate and come and visit "My friend Your wife's house" in Polhena, Matara. I am in my 70ties and I have travelled quite a lot since I was young. So I have seen many places, just to tell you something. The barbecue is ideal for grilling the fish you have just "fished" when going out with the rubber boat and boatman which you can rent while in this house. The beach is right in front of you, waiting you to swim early in the morning for a perfect wake up!
