VEZIO
VEZIO
The village of Vezio is perched on a rocky outcrop half-way up Lake Como. It began its existence, some time around the sixth century BC, as a Ligurian Celtic, possibly even Etruscan, settlement.
Its name probably comes from Vescia, a small town near Rome which was the birthplace of Vescianus, the Roman legionary who was tasked with building and commanding the castrum at Vezio.
At that time Rome was establishing its authority over the whole of the North of Italy in order to guard against incursions by the peoples of northern Europe.
It was in this historical context that a fort was built at Vezio, dominating the shores of the lake and the town of Varenna, which had sprung up on the promontory below.
Later on the Lombards came and built a 60-foot tower which, legend has it, was occupied by Queen Theodolinda.
The history of the castle is linked to that of the lake-side town of Varenna, to which it was joined by two long defensive curtain-walls.
In 1244, when for the first time Varenna rebelled against its feudal overlords in Como and was razed in retaliation, the population took refuge in the impregnable heights above. The town was destroyed, but the castle held out.
Vezio and Varenna passed through the hands of a succession of signorie, the French, and the Spanish.
In 1778 the fief of Varenna and Vezio became the property of the Milanese house of Crivelli Serbelloni, which held it until the 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century it was acquired by the Greppi family.
VARENNA
Varenna is an ancient lake-side town; like Vezio, it is probably of Ligurian-Celtic origin and was later romanised. Written records of the town go back to 493 AD, the year in which Coiro's history of Milan appeared.
On 24 June 1169 the inhabitants of the island of Comacina fled to the other side of the lake. Their homes had been destroyed by the people of Como, who supported the Emperor Frederic Barbarossa, and they were welcomed and given shelter in Varenna. The event is still remembered and celebrated in a series of pageants, generally held in July.
Today Varenna boasts several fine villas in classical style which embellish the shore of the Lake and have gardens of considerable botanical interest.
Above the main square stands the Basilica dedicated to Saint George, a handsome example of fourteenth-century Lombard Romanesque architecture.
