Description from owner

Description

This lovely newly-renovated two storey house is perched on the edge of traditional Merdanya village in central Bulgaria (near Veliko Turnovo). Upstairs, it has two double bedrooms with French doors opening onto a large balcony with wonderful views across the Stara Planina foothills and our beautiful brand new pool - perfect for morning coffee or that evening glass of wine - a bathroom and a twin room. Downstairs has a spacious open plan layout between the living room, dining room and kitchen with all modern amenities, plus a bathroom. (It would be possible to sleep more than the official six with additional mattresses). There is a gorgeous outdoor pool with fabulous views across the valley.

There is a large stone wall garden, cable TV, DVD player, washing machine, above ground pool, wifi, badminton net and 4 racquets, some kids' games and books, barbecue, fire pit and hammock. This is the place to go if you want to get away from it all and re-charge in pristine countryside in a part of Europe where life is still slow and deeply traditional.

In the heart of traditional rural Bulgaria, this is a true country idyll with herds of goats and friendly neighbours producing their own honey and wine. We have a local agent who looks after all our guests needs, also a friend in nearby Hotnitsa who runs local cultural tours, and a friendly taxi driver who will also double as a pizza delivery man. Merdanya is a small authentic Bulgarian village - expect to see wattle and daub houses, babushkas in head scarves, herds of goats and the odd horse-pulled cart. Nearly every villager grows their own food so the gardens are full of proudly tended corn, peppers and vines. There are two little grocery/general stores which are good for food basics including bread, cheese, salad, coffee, beer wine, local deli provisions, sweets etc. Other shops include an ironmonger, two café / bars,a pottery (where visits can be arranged) and a fish shop. Local supplies are just that – local – so whatever is in season is in the shops - and fantastically fresh and full of flavour. And the default method of food production is organic in small plots and gardens.

The historic city of Veliko Turnovo - which was the medieval capital of Bulgaria and an important cultural centre - is just 15 minutes drive away with its bars, cafés, restaurants, banks, shops etc. There are some stunning nature walks in the area, plus a beautiful monastery high on a hilltop nearby, plus horse riding, birdwatching, archery and fishing all nearby. We can help organise all of these.

“Amazing house in the most tranquil location”

Reviewed 20 Jun 2018

My friends and I had a fantastic week's holiday here in June 2018. The house is huge and very well equipt; we had everything we needed. The views from the balcony where we spent our evenings are beautiful (if you're an earlybird you can see the sunrise over the mountains: it's spectacular). The pool is awesome, and is where we spent most of our week! It's not overlooked, and there are few sounds other than the birds. We couldn't have had a more relaxing time. The village has a couple of shops less than 10 minutes away where you can pick up daily essentials, and a large supermarket is only about 20 minutes away by car. We really enjoyed Bulgarian lager and red wine, which are incredible value. For pet lovers, there are lots of lovely, friendly dogs in the village. There are lots of cats too but they are very shy. And for nature-lovers, we observed eagles, cranes, bats, fireflies, lizards and a couple of very interesting frogs! Diana, who met us to give us the keys, was super friendly and helpful, and gave us some great recommendations for local sightseeing and places to eat. Thank you for a wonderful holiday, we hope to come back some day. Ellie, Gemma and Pippa

“Guest book in the house- photo”

Reviewed 26 Jul 2016

Please see attached photo for a guest review (from our guest book in the house). Tracey stayed here with her family for her daughter's 21st and had a lovely time!

Response from the owner An excerpt review in the guest book reads: "Thank you so much! We had an incredible holiday. The house was extremely comfortable and great wifi! We celebrated our traditional Jewish holiday "Passover" (Pesach) and were able to cook a meal for the "seder", which is the traditional meal that kicks off the holiday. We loved the quiet the beautiful countryside and did some walking as well as tour local villages. Certainly understand why you guys bought this place; siting on the verandah even I felt inspired to paint or write and I usually do neither! Loved our Bulgarian experience and hope to do it again soon. Will recommend your house to friends, with warmth!" Lovely guests! More guestbook reviews can be seen in the photo section.
