Description from owner

Description

Esmé's Cottage is located just 50 metres from the original Ivy Bridge, a 13th Century stone-built construction which crosses the River Erme in the old part of Ivybridge's town centre. The bridge is still in use today. Of 'hump-back' design and originally used by both riders and pack horses, it is the subject of the 1813 painting by Turner entitled 'Ivy Bridge'.

The Cottage is one of 6 in a row of terraced cottages which were built approximately 170 years ago. Originally of single story thatched design, the cottages have been extended over the years, and the thatch has been replaced with more functional slate tiles.

On entering from the street, the Cottage comprises a main living room and large kitchen/diner downstairs. Upstairs there are 3 pretty bedrooms and a toilet/bathroom with bath and shower. The property is carpeted throughout, except for the blue-pebble bathroom floor, and the kitchen which is floored in blue-grey slate.

The accommodation, which is centrally heated and benefits from modern sealed unit double-glazing, comfortably sleeps up to 5 + baby. We consider this to be an appropriate number of guests for the size of the property and the available facilities. Guests also have access to a small, private south-facing patio and rockery garden to the rear of the property. Outdoor table & chairs, parasol and lounger are provided.

Getting around

By car, the moor and the beaches are easily accessible as are the nearby cities of Exeter and Plymouth. Even a return trip to Truro or Falmouth in Cornwall can be done in a day. So, you have a huge area of England to explore. It is also possible to travel around the region by rail. Ivybridge railway station can be reached on foot from the cottage, though a taxi is preferable if you have luggage. Ivybridge sits on the main line between Exeter and Plymouth. The area is surprisingly well-serviced by rail links, with lots of stopping-off points along the way

Interaction with guest

During the booking process, I will send you all of my contact details. I am available at any time to resolve issues with the cottage, and have maintenance people on-hand locally should any problems arise. I prefer not to be in constant contact with our guests. After all, you are on holiday to relax! However, I am proud of the South Hams area, know it well, and will happily give advice on what to do in the local area. You only have to ask.

“Lovely, Homely Cottage in a Great Location”

Reviewed 18 Aug 2019

We loved this cottage, it was as described - full of character, clean and a good size, with a well equipped kitchen. For rainy afternoons when they occurred, there was a good selection of board games. The WiFi was adequate for emails, a spot of browsing and streaming on one device but not much more - which was fine for us. The cottage’s tranquil garden came with a friendly neighbourhood cat who strolled by on occasions for affection and appreciation. The parking was as described but it really wasn't an issue as there was always alternative parking within 100 metres of the property. If I was going to be extra picky, I would suggest a little more storage space in the smallest bedroom if possible and a blind on the Velux window in the main bedroom would be helpful, as the light comes through early in the morning. However, neither of these things spoiled our stay in this lovely property! The centre of the town is a 3 minute walk with two small supermarkets, restaurants and bars. The train station is also not far away and had free parking so you can visit other locations by rail if preferred. As the designated driver it was nice to see the area and absorb the sights as I glided past. There was so much to do in the vicinity of this property, locally there are several nice beaches to visit including Batham and Bigbury-on-Sea and we spent a good deal of time in Plymouth, wandering round the Hoe and Smeaton’s Tower, visiting Tinside Lido, the Barbican, Plymouth Gin Distillery, the National Marine Aquarium and watching the National Fireworks Championships. We also had splendid visits to Torquay (the harbour and marina are lovely for a walk) and Paignton (try Scoffs for their wonderful ‘Yorkshire’ chips) We also ventured further afield with day trips to Cornwall (Polpero and Looe) and Dorset (Monkey World, Durdle Door and Lime Regis). Overall, we had a wonderful time, thank you!

Response from the owner Alina, Thank you for such a detailed review. Sounds like you made the best of your time in South Devon. Yours is the first comment we have had about the wifi. I will check the service. The Velux window does split opinion, with some guests commenting that the original blind on the high ceiling Velux made the room too dark. Bedroom 3 storage: we keep our eyes open for an aesthetically pleasing storage solution in the single room, which won't cause the room to feel cluttered. I really do welcome and appreciate your comments. Thank you, Russell

Response from the owner Lawrence, Thanks for the review, and I’m glad you enjoyed the cottage. The flexible parking restrictions are put in place by the local authority to encourage shoppers into town. As we are only 150m or so from the top of the High Street, it’s just a fact of town centre life. As well as being able to park overnight without restriction, if you decide to stay in during the day, you can park all day without restriction just 80m up the road, and also round the corner at the pharmacy. There is also a municipal carpark just across the bridge. I hope the parking arrangements didn’t spoil things too much for you and your guests. Thx, Russell
