Description from owner

Description

The Tithe Barn is a large and historically important part of a Grade 2 listed late-medieval farm, set within the Dartmoor countryside, but only a short walk the historic small town of Ashburton. It has been lovingly reconstructed and restored by the present owners over nearly three years, having been neglected as a partial ruin since a fire in the 1980s. The rebuild has used reclaimed local granite stone, Cornish lime mortar, local and French oak, sheep wool insulation, and reed thatch; creating a unique holiday home with the homely warm feel of natural timbers joinery and floors, along with traditional lime plasterwork. Local craftsmen were chosen to give great attention to every detail; for example, the amazing thatching details were created by the local president of the Master Thatchers’ Association. Inside you will see chunky hand-made roof trusses and doorways where joints are pegged in the traditional style. All the joinery is bespoke, and has been made on site.

Dogs are not accepted when booking through Trip Advisor.

The cottage that has evolved is not only warm and homely to look at, but also provides modern style, comfort, and utility. The open-plan lounge, dining room, and kitchen allow the guests to enjoy time together whilst some lucky guests are doing the cooking! Chefs will be delighted with the well-equipped, quality kitchen, with granite worktops, a Britannia dual fuel range cooker, dishwasher, Brita filtered water on tap, Nespresso machine, and an unusually large fridge/freezer. At the lounge end of the room there is a large Samsung flat screen TV with Freesat satellite channels and record / catch up functions, and a DVD player. All the ground floor has under-floor heating. Here you can relax in comfortable sofas and armchairs, whilst enjoying the views across the pond and patio area. On a warm day you could open the wide bi-fold door and enjoy the combined spaces.

The three en-suite double bedrooms are spacious and stylish. Two of them have super-king (6 ft) zip-and-link beds which can be arranged as two singles. The other has a king-sized (5 ft) bed. All the beds are pocket sprung for ultimate comfort, and all the bedding and towels are good quality cotton. All the bathrooms are well equipped; two have baths and all have showers with good water pressure.

Historic Ashburton is a short walk away, and is the largest town within the Dartmoor National Park. Here you will find a full range of local shops including two delicatessens, an artisan baker, a health food shop, two butchers, gift shops, art studios, and numerous antique shops. There are cafes serving delicious home-made cakes, and pubs serving good meals and local beverages. Open moorland is not far away; here you can walk on hundreds of open footpaths with amazing views; you can ride out from stables, or even hire electric bikes to explore further afield. The River Dart, less than a mile from the property, offers wooded riverside walks and canoeing.
