Hikkaduwa :
15 minutes south on the beautiful coastal road, Hikkaduwa is the place to taste more touristy atmosphere with a lot of restaurants specializing in fish and seafood (as well as pizza), diving centers, glass bottom boats to see corals, fishes and turtles. You can also surf and enjoy the nightlife.
Galle :
30 km southbound, you surely won't miss Galle, the main city in southern Sri Lanka. This is an opportunity to take the picturesque train to visit the walled city built by the Dutch, a World Heritage Site. Exciting shopping to do in the boutiques of the Fort and nice restaurants.
Galle is also known for jewels and lace.
A few kilometers before arriving in Galle, you can have an elephant ride, and participate to the bath of these endearing pachyderms.
Further:
The national parks of Uda Walawe and Yala, a few hours drive from Ambalangoda help you discover elephants, crocodiles, peacocks, toucans, monkeys, buffalos ... in their natural environment. It is possible to visit in a one-day tour.
