Description from owner

Description

Set in 25 acres of evergreen oak woodland, surrounded by cherry and apricot orchards and the vineyards and caves of the St Joseph and Hermitage AOC's.

Le Vitrier offers a wonderful environment for couples and families looking for culture, adventure and relaxation. The gite is separate from the main farmhouse with private access. There is ample parking space and a lovely garden full of roses, lavender, flowers, fruit trees and herbs.

Both the Ardeche and the Drome departments have a wealth of activities, sights and events to suit all tastes and budgets. Locally the Doux valley offers swimming; fishing; a wealth of hill villages; gastronomic treats; wine tasting and Val Rhona chocolate to experience and enjoy. Day trips to the cities of Lyon, Avignon and Orange are easily accessible by train or car.

Further details

A security deposit of £250/€250 is required on arrival, refundable to guests on departure.

Further details indoors

The gite has a well equipped kitchen for more adventurous cooks. Meals can be shared inside or outside in the adjacent garden under the shade of cherry trees. June is cherry season and guests are welcome to pick and eat as many cherries as they like. Local markets have fresh seasonal produce grown on our doorstep and the resident hens are happy to provide fresh eggs on request.

Bedrooms are comfortable with adequate storage. One with a king sized bed and the second is a twin with 2 small double beds. The lounge is spacious with a beamed chateau ceiling and a comfortable place to relax on hot days and evenings, with beautiful views of the Vercors mountains and Doux river valley. A wood burner in fireplace and a large flat screen television with satelite UK viewing provide cosy evenings in the winter months. The area is celebrated for cycling and June/July sees the Ardechoise one of the largest road races in France. Guests wishing to bring cycles are welcome to store them in the secure outbuildings on the farm, local rental is also available.

Further details outdoors

The garden is private and surrounded by cherry and apricot orchards with outside furniture for relaxing and eating and a barbecue area with gas barbecue. Outside space is particularly important to us in this part of the country as much of the year is spent outdoors in garden, fields, orchards and vinyards for pleasure and work.

Walks on the Grand Randonee 42 are accessible from the doorstep and the wider area is celebrated for walking to suit all standards.

“Walkers and cyclists paradise!”

Reviewed 6 Oct 2018

I'll get straight to the point. We have stayed in several regions throughout France during our holidays over the last few years and The Ardeche is easily our favourite so far. Tournon sur Rhone is such a fantastically relaxing place to be and a good centre for days out far and wide. Le Vitier is just a few kilometres from the town and offers peace, tranquility and beautiful views in equal measure. If you choose to stay there, trust your sat-nav!! We drove a while along narrow roads and tracks, convinced we had missed a turn. All was good in the end, and Tony met us as we arrived. The property itself, set at the top of a large hill, is spacious, with most of the accommodation on one level, while the kitchen and front entrance are down a few steps. From the parking area, level access is simple via the glazed double doors in to the lounge........glazed double doors that allow fantastic views of the valley, Tournon in the distance and the river Rhone. Although not "ultra modern", the accommodation is very comfortable and the guests private garden is a great place to relax on a lazy day. There are many country walks (both easy going and very challenging) that are accessible around Le Vitrier without having to get in the car. As a very keen cyclist, I was in seventh heaven. Again, there are rides of varying degrees of difficulty right on the doorstop. If you like racking up the vertical Km's, most routes will finish with the 5km (7-8% grade) climb back up from the valley below. Great training for our trip over to Alpe dHuez! There are also easy, flat, scenic rides along the banks of the river Rhone (using the La Via Rhona cycle track). 23 kilometres south takes you to Valence, a town we particularly liked. For those who fancy taking on some of the iconic climbs of the Tour de France, the Alps is just a couple of hours away in the car. Walks through the vineyards of Tain L Hermitage, across the river from Tournon were a highlight and the views are just incredible. We also "enjoyed" getting slightly lost and ending up in Le Mastre towards the west. The little steam train, with its station in the valley below Le Vitrier is well worth a trip, as it trundles through the deep gorges. Very scenic indeed! There are plenty of brochures and leaflets about places to see at Le Vitrier, but from my point of view, it would be good if some pointers were detailed in a folder by the owners. Tony and Candy are an absolute font of knowledge when it comes to recommending days out, but it was often only by chance that we found out about some of these. Every recommendation provided us with a good day out, but I can't help thinking some of these may have been missed unless they had cropped up in conversation. A small folder detailing some of these gems would have been useful. In particular the trip to Villard de Lans, via Pont en Royans and Charanche. Would I recommend Le Vitrier? 100% yes, and I would go back there (and to Tournon sur Rhone) tomorrow if I could. I just love the place. Thanks Tony and Candy for a great place to stay and for your hospitality. Hope to see you again some time.

“Very peaceful & great views”

Reviewed 22 Oct 2016

A great location for exploring the towns around the Rhone and also the beautiful Vercors Massif, not to mention the immediate vicinity of the gorge du Doux which can be explored by steam train, the station of which can be seen down in the valley from the gite. Lots of walks from the gite which has a number of outside seating / dining areas including a very pleasant sheltered garden. Hosts are lovely people with helpful advice to make the most of the holiday, but not at all intrusive.

“A gloriously relaxing place to stay”

Reviewed 23 Jul 2014

There is a good atmosphere about Le Vitrier. Nestled in the hills above Tournon sur Rhone, the Gite has fantastic views over the town towards the vinyards of Tain l'Hermitage and the distant Alps. If you get tired of that, the garden offers a delightful peaceful area to relax and enjoy your meals. You feel as if you are right out in the Ardeche countryside, but within ten to fifteen minutes drive you can be in the town. The kitchen is well equipped, the rooms well-furnished and spacious. Do note though that there is no air conditioning. There is ample private outdoor space at the front and the back with all the facilities including a barbecue. You will need your satnav or follow the owners clear instructions carefully to find the Gite for the first time, but it is well worth the effort, and you soon learn the route!. The resident English owners plus their assortment of animals make you completely welcome, and will do all they can to make your stay enjoyable. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and would recommend it wholeheartedly.

“VIVE LE VITRIER! YOU'LL FALL IN LOVE--WE DID.”

Reviewed 11 Jul 2014

This little gem is hard not to love. It is nestled atop a hill overlooking the Hermitage. The only thing that compares to the beautiful views out the rental, the wonderful towns in the area and the gardens in which your stay will be set are the owners Candy and Tony. We spent a week here, and both Candy and Tony made the trip for us. They are both so knowledgeable about the areas, events and things to do. We were never bored, and they know how to entertain. We love them dearly. This is the place if you want a basecamp to go antiquing. Candy knows every place to buy exquisite for inexpensive French country antiques. We love it, the area, and tem so much, we are trying to buy the place next door. Everything about this place is A++++.
