Description from owner

Description

Benone Farmhouse is a beautiful country house retreat, situated in a stunning location, a stone throw away from Benone Beach. On a working farm, it was a family residence until recently. It has been completely refurbished to a high standard with rooms individually furnished in a boutique style. The art deco features of the house have been preserved whilst combining vintage retro with modern touches for comfortable living. Extensive grounds afford space for outdoor activities. Guests can fully absorb the beauty and serenity of the surroundings whilst relaxing outside. Garden furniture provides options for outdoor dining or picnics. The house also has a disabled access into the garden. A lockable outdoor barn provides storage for sports equipment and drying facilities, following a day spent at the beach.

There are uninterrupted panoramic views from every window, overlooked by the majestic Binevenagh mountain to the front and vast swathes of open countryside all around. The iconic Mussenden Temple to the East perched on the cliff face is instantly recognisable, as are the misty Donegal blue mountains to the west.

At the end of the farm lane (less than 0.5miles) is the newly re-furbished Anglers Rest, under new management, serving good food and drink. If you fancy afternoon teas or a great Sunday dinner, Ballymaclary House, a beautiful Georgian period house is only a 2 min walk from the lane end.

‘On the doorstep’ within walking distance (or 2 mins by car), there is the impressive 7 mile stretch of Benone Beach with its Blue Flag status. Nearby is the Benone Complex offering a vast array of children’s activities including Crazy golf, tennis courts and an outdoor swimming pool. The Board Walk cafe adjacent to the Complex, offers a relaxing place to sit and enjoy a family breakfast/lunch. Or for speciality coffee on the go, try the little sister coffee shop called Seashed situated at the edge of the beach at the end of Benone Avenue. The owners run Longline Surf School which offers a range of watersports activities/adventures for groups and individuals and comes highly recommended on visitor experience.

Getting around

It is advisable to have a car. The nearest train station at Bellarena is about 10 mins away. This is the main rail link to Belfast and Derry.

Interaction with guest

I feel it is important to respect guests' privacy yet be available to address any concerns that may arise during their stay. On arrival, I normally meet guests to show them around and suggest local places of interest, activities and recommend local eateries if requested. If unable to do this on the day, a key would be left in a keypad and I would follow up asap with a phone call and a visit later to check they had settled in. I am committed to making my guests feel as comfortable as possible so that they are able to enjoy their holidays and take home pleasant memories.

“Wonderful family holiday”

Reviewed 22 Sep 2020

This cottage and location had everything for a wonderful family holiday. The cottage is quiet and private with its own gate halfway down the lane. There's a pub with good food just a two minute drive away, and the beautiful Benone Beach is just five minutes in the car (the kids went surfng three times)! Plus there's a nearby Spar shop. Bushmills, Portrush, Portstewart, Castlerock...all within 20-40 minutes. Derry is about 50 minutes away in the other direction. We all had a lovely time here, and we'd love to think we'd be back again. Sarah is on hand when you arrive, and leaves you in peace to enjoy your holiday but also gets back to you if you need her.

Response from the owner It's interesting how these guests have misrepresented the key issues that gave rise to their grievances. It was fully explained to them, at the outset, that the upstairs shower had low pressure and that I was presently discussing with a plumber the best way to improve this -either by installing an electric pump or a second electric shower. Such a job could only be done when there were no guests in the house, due to the inevitable disruption. As there had been continuous bookings during July and August it was not possible to address this issue until this week. Now the work has been done and there is a second electric shower in the house, in the upstairs bathroom. It is a complete distortion of the facts to say that I was aware of it, didn't listen to my guests and did nothing about it. This only reveals their vindictive, nasty intentions. These guests were generously compensated for any inconvenience caused, an important detail they chose to omit from the review. The issue about the sofa is another example of a manipulation of the facts. The sofa in question is a large antique sofa which was perfectly ok when the guests arrived. I did not question their version of events - that the leg just "fell off". The sofa was fixed by an antiques expert within 2-3 hours from when the issue was first raised and no blame was suggested. In addition, I brought them extra coal, turf, fire lighters, kindling etc as a goodwill gesture because I knew they enjoyed the wood burning stove. However these gestures went mostly unnoticed and unappreciated, as did my agreement to accept an extra guest to their party for no extra charge, supplying extra towels etc. The arrogant, condescending manner in which these two complaints were presented was unpleasant. The other complaints I'm hearing for the first time in the review. I'm very sorry there was no bottle opener. That could have been easily remedied. The fridge was spotlessly clean - I know this for certain - it was brand new and these people were the first to use it! It's a pity these guests don't live up to their own "high expectations". They had an early check-in despite not giving me 24 hours notice as agreed; they paid the remaining balance one day before arrival and not two weeks earlier, as agreed. And just to cap it all, they avoided paying me the agreed security deposit on arrival. I called later in the week and again they did not pay it or take up the offer of a bank transfer. I would not recommend these guests to anyone. Most guests are appreciative of owners' efforts to make their stay as comfortable as possible and appreciate value for money. A party of 7-8 paying somewhere around £13 per person per night for the quality offered would be hard to match, except for hostel accommodation. My experience is that these guests demand 5 star hotel luxury, forgetting that this is not what they paid for and that it is indeed a farmhouse. Five star hotel accommodation may be a better bet in future. But perhaps even there, their high expectations may not be met.
