Description from owner

Description

Le Pintadeau cottage is one of two cottages and five apartments that are all located within the grounds or main house of ‘Val Rive’, beside the beautiful Rance river. Le Pintadeau is spacious, well equipped and fully furnished to a high standard in the Bréton style. The accommodation is on two floors – an open plan lounge, dining and newly fitted kitchen area, together with shower room/WC on the ground floor, and two bedrooms upstairs. It has beautiful views across to the river and out to the secluded garden. There is also private, off-road parking next to the cottage.

Built in 1814, Val Rive is situated in a river valley in the quaint quartier of Léhon on the outskirts of the historic town of Dinan – one of the best-preserved medieval towns in France. Val Rive’s setting is very picturesque, overlooking a medieval toll bridge over the Rance from where a cobbled street leads to the 9th century Abbey and ancient ruined Chateau of Léhon. Indeed, Léhon has the status of ‘Petite Cité de Caractère’ (small town of character) and visitors fall in love with it, returning year after year to this charming village. Riverside paths take you into the tranquil Breton countryside and to the scenic river harbour of ‘Port de Dinan’. Dinan town centre can be reached on foot in about 20 minutes or by car in 5.

Further details

We whole-heartedly recommend ‘La Marmite de L’Abbaye’ in the adjacent street, to the side of Val Rive. It’s an extremely friendly convivial restaurant, with award-winning food (pre-booking advised). There’s also ’Lerouilly’, a lovely boulangerie/pâtisserie a few minutes walk away, selling a wonderful selection of pastries along with fresh loaves for your usual day-to-day requirements.

In nearby Lanvallay (5 minutes by car) is a large supermarket that’s also open on Sunday mornings. On Thursday’s the carpark at ‘Place du Guesclin’ in Dinan is taken over by a large traditional market selling a broad selection of items and provincial produce. It’s a perfect way to take in the local atmosphere before finding a relaxing place to sit down and enjoy a coffee, kir, or local cider.

Further details outdoors

For those wishing to swim there is a 25m public swimming pool (outdoor heated, with waterslide) less than 5 minutes walk away. Léhon also has a tennis club (with four indoor courts and one outdoor court) about 10 minutes walk up the main street to Dinan. Dinan town centre can be reached on foot in about 20 minutes or by car in 5.

Getting around

There is much to explore in the surrounding region: rugged beaches, ruined castles, beautiful churches, and town squares with delightful cafes serving their local specialities – crepes, galettes (pancakes), butter cakes, shellfish, oysters from nearby Cancale, and Breton cider. A hire car is the easiest way to get around, but bicycles are great fun too. You might choose to cycle to Dinard along the old towpaths of the Rance valley that help make up the ‘voies vertes’ (green ways) network. Alternatively, you could rent a boat, canoe or kayak for an hour or two on the Rance.

“Okay but…”

Reviewed 25 Jun 2022

Pintadeau is in a great location and has a pleasant little garden. The cottage is attractive from the outside but inside is smaller than it first appears. The staircase is narrow and we found it difficult to carry up even a small suitcase. It is basically equipped and does not have a hairdryer, which surprised me. The shower and kitchen were fine, but we found the settee uncomfortable and it smelled very stale. The cottage could do with being updated. The area around is stunning. Many of the buildings are hundreds of years old and Dinan is a very pleasant 25 minute stroll along the River.

“Picturesque Lehon”

Reviewed 3 Aug 2015

Lehon is lovely with a fantastic restaurant (Le Marmite). Le Pintadeau is comfortable and spacious with everything you need, the private garden was a delight, we had lunch and breakfast outside and dinner at Le Marmite. The walk along the river to Dinan is a must where there a shops and restaurants. Although there is WiFi at the main house it would be good to have it in the Gite also. We were surprised that there wasn't a welcome pack (a couple of teabags, coffee sachets, milk, etc), in many years of travelling around France we have always had something to make a drink with on arrival - quite often even a bottle of wine. We had a great holiday and would recommend Lehon and Val Rive

“Beautiful Lehon”

Reviewed 3 Aug 2013

Le Pintadeau is a lovely property ideally situated for your stay in Dinan and for touring the wonderful Breton coastline a short drive away. The cottage is very comfortable and well equipped and the garden is very private, getting the sun all day but being blissfully shaded in the evening. This was our second visit to the beautiful village of Lehon and it was even more beautiful than we remembered. Within walking distance of the town of Dinan or a short lovely walk along the river to the old port with its restaurants.

“Lovely, quaint cottage by the river just a 15 minute walk to Dinan”

Reviewed 21 Sep 2012

Great location, nice view of the river out of the main bedroom. Lots of lovely routes to walk into Dinan from there. Good facilities, particularly the bathroom. Stays nice and cool during the hotter months. Decent living space and nice bedrooms. Next to a quiet road, but you don't notice it. Also close to a fantastic family restaurant called La Marmite. The British owners don't live on site but they often visit. They were great and very accommodating. Recommended if you like peace and quiet or exploring by bike or on foot.

“Lovely spot just down river from Dinan”

Reviewed 19 Aug 2012

We knew the area fairly well and wanted to stay outside Dinan this time. It was a pity the lovely towpath walk from Lehon to Dinan was closed off due to a rock fall. There is some traffic noise in the cottage, which is inevitable as it is on the roadside.Lehon is a lovely place to stay however, and away from the Summer bustle of Dinan. The cottage was very comfortable with a lovely new shower room. The kitchen utensils and cooking bowls could do with improving however, and a decent set of pyrex dishes would be nice ( and cheap to provide).

“lovely cottage in a beautiful, sleepy valley excellent.”

Reviewed 13 Jul 2011

The cottage was very clean on arrival and even though on a road the garden/patio area was private. A really lovely part of France right on the river. with great walks along the river in both directions. The kitchen was well equipped although we did buy a chefs knife but that was our choice as we love to cook. Le Marmite was a joy we ate there on our first and last night and the friendly service was great. Couldn't fault the cottage but you do need a car to see the surrounding area we found a french activity lake which was quiet and lovely for walking around just a few miles from the accommodation. Would highly recommend accommodation and the apartments looked good too. Rebecca Chambers
