We have a beautiful large house in a large walled garden with plenty of shade. This listing is for our Mandala room, the master suite which has it's own bath and shower room and a queen size bed.
We also offer beds in shared rooms (all inclusive of food etc. as below) . Please inquire for this option. Wifi is included.
Morning Juice, vegan lunch and light evening meal is included, as is morning yoga class, evening workshop and access to our healing program.
An air-conditioner is available in each of the bedrooms, however the house is cool during the days and the evening's tend to be cool and breezy negating the need for it. If the air-conditioners will be required then this will require an additional payment.
We have many communal areas that you can rest and relax including the downstairs main living areas, outside patio area, 2nd floor balcony, or our favourite the open air palapa space on the 3rd floor of the property (although sometimes in use for workshops or therapies) where you can take in the sights and sounds of the neighborhood, bask in the cooling ocean breeze and watch the sun set. On the 2nd floor is our healing room which is sometimes in use for massages, but at other times can be used as a quiet space for meditation.
We have an extensive library of health and wellness books that you are welcome to check out when you arrive and check back in on your departure.
We are a healing retreat center, so during your stay there will be a large variety of healing activities taking place at the Sanctuary which will also be available for you to experience if you wish. We find that a lot of our guests come and stay with us to have a break from their holiday. Sometimes a special Healing Retreat will be taking part during your stay. If you would like to join the retreat, you may do so subject to space for an additional fee.
If you are looking for something different, interacting with authentic people, learning new information about health and wellness, trying some fresh delicious and healthy foods and beverages, then this is the place for you.
Terms & Conditions
Terms and Conditions for staying at The Sanctuary Yoga Retreat Center
We are a vegan household serving mostly raw food and mostly gluten free. We are usually unable to cater to individual dietary restriction, but please ask in advance if you have any specific needs so we can let you know if we can help. Eating mostly raw and living foods (such as sprouted seeds, grains and nuts) gives us far more energy than processed "dead" food. Our aim is to serve around 80% raw food.
Our usual menu consists of a large (375 ml) green smoothie for breakfast (with a tonic - a selection of healing additives such as Ginger, Moringa, Turmeric, agnihotra ash, cardamon, cinnamon, aloe vera, borax, cayenne, cloves etc.), a good sized and varied gluten free vegan lunch & a light snack for dinner (usually left overs from lunchtime or some fruit). Occasionally we serve oats for breakfast.
Although avoiding snacking between meals might be more supportive to the healing process, we offer 2-3 of pieces of fruit per day as snacks between meals if required. We do not offer kitchen access to guests or staff except for preparation of community food at authorised times. No food is allowed in bedrooms to avoid attracting insect. There is a small fridge just outside the kitchen where you can label and store a small amount of personal food.
You may find it supportive to your health to supplement the food we provide with some “super-foods like Spirulina & Maca which are not included in our prices. They are available for purchase at Moringa Fresh and Wild which is about 10 mins walk from The Sanctuary.
No coffee, meat, fish, processed "junk" foods or dairy products are allowed in the grounds of The Sanctuary Yoga Retreat Center.
FASTING ON MONDAY
Mondays are Juice Fasting days to bring the body back to a humble center.
Another option is Water Fasting with support of live supplements such as ginger, turmeric, aloe vera and lemon. Another possibility is Coconut Fasting. Although we strongly encourage fasting on Mondays to allow the digestive system to rest & give the body time for healing, we currently offer an an option to eat fruit or leftovers instead of fasting. No food preparation other than juicing is done on Mondays. If you choose to juice, you will be provided with 3 x 375 ml juices (with tonic).
We are currently (6th January 2015) using a Berkey Water Purifier (which has been treated with (website: hidden) technology. In addition we buy filtered water in 20 litre bottles. Our intention in the near future is to investigate the quality of this water and find ways to improve the purity & vibration.
We live in an suburban area. There are noises around us, such as dogs barking, cockerels crowing (often during the night) & local vendors with loudspeakers from their vehicles (from as early as 7am). We are about 100 metres from a basketball court where events and parties are sometimes held with very loud music. This happens usually only once or twice a month, but can be more frequent in holiday periods. We also have a neighbour who turns is music up very loud during the day, but usually this is only for an hour or so, and only about once per month.
Most people get used to the sounds around. Others are disturbed and have trouble sleeping. Please bring earplugs (or buy in local pharmacies) if you feel this may be a problem for you.
No alcohol, tobacco, illegal plant medicines, or pharmaceutical drugs (unless declared) are allowed in the grounds of The Sanctuary Yoga Retreat Center.
We strongly encourage that whilst staying at The Sanctuary, you refrain from drinking alcohol, smoking, etc. While it is okay to do these things outside in moderation, be aware that there could be an impact that would not be supportive to those here going through their own process upon your return here. Potentially if your actions are not supportive of the healing space you could be asked to cut short your stay at The Sanctuary with a partial refund for the unused part of the stay as per our cancellation/early departure terms (details on price pages).
LIGHTS OUT & INTERNET USE
To support the time for healing during sleep and ensure sufficient rest for a pre-sunrise start to the day with meditation, the house is locked at 10.30 pm and silence is maintained thereafter until after meditation the following morning. There can be occasional exceptions to this rule, perhaps for some group nights out and/or on other occasions as long as we are sure other guests will not be disturbed. The general rule however is that the house is always locked at 10.30 pm, so please consider this carefully before choosing to stay at The Sanctuary.
To help the body wind down and therefore promote healthy sleep, and again to encourage early rising for meditation, the use of internet is discouraged after dinner. Please don't use internet in the rooms after 9 pm. The internet is switched off at 10.30 pm.
Although The Sanctuary is predominantly a space for adults, there have been and will continue to be occasions when we accept children as guests in our healing space. We are careful when choosing to allow or not children to stay with their parent/s so as to do our best to ensure that all our guests are given space to go through their healing process.
PAYMENT TERMS, CANCELLATION OR EARLY DEPARTURE
See the Guest Prices & Volunteer Guest Prices pages for information about cancellation of Guest stays.
SPECIAL TERMS FOR RETREATS & WORKSHOPS
Payments for the Non-Resident (or teaching only element) of Retreats & Workshops are non-refundable, as decisions are made based upon payments received. Before booking please be certain you will not cancel, or accept you will not be refunded if you are unable to attend.
QUALIFIED / PROFESSIONAL STAFF
Please note that to be able to offer the prices we charge, often vastly lower than other healing centers, we rely mostly on our work exchange and volunteer guest staff to operate our community. Our daily schedule (including yoga classes) is facilitated by both our staff, volunteer guests and guests who do not necessarily have professional qualifications.
What is offered, will depend upon who is staying in our community and what they have to share. It may not always be possible to fully maintain our schedule, yet often we offer more.
This also applies to support available to guests taking advantage of our healing protocol, our juice fasting, raw food & other retreats. We have an ample supply of guidance by way of books, video & audio.
Professionally qualified support is not included in our prices as we do not employ staff for this purpose. We do offer our guests introductory support meetings with our management team, but these are limited to about 10 minutes. Further weekly meetings are available on request. With advance notice, we can offer more in depth personal guidance sessions as an optional extra.TripAdvisor property ID 3337548...Read more
The Sanctuary - Mandala Room Puerto Escondido, Mexican Riviera-Pacific Coast, Mexico
Additional Location Information
Our house is set in very large walled gardens in a suburban area of Puerto Escondido called La Punta. Although there is sometimes music from neighbours, cockerels crowing, dogs a barking and occasional advertising vans playing there slogans ("Gas de Oaxaca" :-), The Sanctuary is still a peaceful place.
A 500 metre walk will see you standing on the beach where you can swim or just hang out. From there a 20 minutes walk one way will take you to the famous Zicatela surfers beach, and 5-10 minute walk in the opposite direction will take you closer to La Punta with some tourist/surfer restaurants and shops & to the point where there are also lots of surfers.
A collectivo (shared taxi) ride into town takes you to the central market which is about a 10 minute ride away and costs just 5 pesos. There are a variety of beaches within easy collectivo or taxi ride, some being more suitable for surfing and some for swimming, depending upon the conditions of the season/day.
Please note: these rates exclude taxes and fees and may vary depending on the length of your stay. Rates are also subject to change at the [owner/manager]’s discretion.
Cleaning fee | $10 per stay
Fees for additional guests may apply.
Additional notes from the owner
We favour longer stays, hence minimum 3 nights. The longer you stay the cheaper it gets. The price includes morning smoothie, a delicicious vegan lunch and a light evening snack, and the opportunity to join in our healing program, yoga classes, meditations & evening sharing sessions. Staying at The Sanctuary changed my life. I thought I was only in for some health juices and learning a little yoga and meditation on the beach, but instead I had the chance to become a part of a community working together in learning and teaching. I've never felt so good physically as I did during my two week stay at The Sanctuary, thanks to the breathing work, the yoga, and the healthy diet. I thought I would never survive without meat or cheese, but instead it was actually really easy! Everyone that was staying there was very supportive, and I couldn't have had such a great experience without the staff and crew. Thank you so much!

I stayed at the Sanctuary for a week and a half in July - the Sanctuary was exactly that "A Sanctuary" a place for me to just relax, unwind, surf, hang out with authentic people and focus on myself.
The establishment is located in a quiet part of Puerto Escondido very near (10mins walk) the popular surfing beach Zicatela. Being an avid surfer myself I loved that the beach was so close with the point break another 10 mins walk once you get to the beach. For a small deposit they even leant me their surfboard. Sure I could have stayed at a cheaper hostel a little bt closer to the beach but the Sanctuary offered me so much more than what any hostel could offer.
The real magic is what they are creating - which is a place where you can come and evolve either as an individual or as a small or large group. They aim to help you move forwards on all levels physically, emotionally, spiritually. Included in my stay was their regular yoga classes, african dance, daily fresh organic juice and breakfast and a cooked vegetarian lunch - I did not even need to eat an evening meal! They are also actively involving the local community in all of their programs and events.
Pete the owner is a great guy, he is the visionary for the space and what it is evolving into. Although he has now overseas looking to start another place and has handed over the daily operation to a manager.
Other aspects I loved about the Sanctuary:
- It is a massive villa with three levels, the Palapa on the 3rd level is awesome
- They treat you as part of your family from the time you arrive and even after you leave - I have made some lifelong friends from my stay.
- There is always something happening e.g. yoga, meditation, day trips, going out to a cafe, going shopping at the local market
- It is in the heart of a local neighbourhood - so you get a true local experience, however a 10min walk and you are amongst local bars and restaurants.
If you're looking for something different this is the place for you.
