Discover Riquewihr, one of the most beautiful villages in France
The historic town of Riquewihr situated at the heart of the famous Alsace Wine Route, is without any doubt the best-known and most-visited medieval city with an international reputation. It is only a few kilometres from other must-visit places in Alsace, such as Colmar, the capital of Alsace wines and birthplace of Bartholdi, or Kaysersberg, the birthplace of Nobel Peace Prize winner Albert Schweitzer, or Eguisheim, birthplace of the only Alsace pope, Leo IX.
Riquewihr’s worldwide reputation comes from its rich history and architectural heritage. The visitor will discover picturesque streets of half-timbered houses, decked with flowers, the medieval city walls and the “Dolder” gateway tower, whose enigmatic silhouette has inspired artists and poets. The originality of local museums attracts many visitors : the museum of Posts and Telecommunications (in the chateau), the museum dedicated to Hansi, filled with popular images, works and paintings by this mischievous Alsace patriot and caricaturist, and not for the faint-hearted, the Tour des Voleurs, complete with torture chamber and walkway.
The houses of Riquewihr vary from the traditional wood frame or half-timbered buildings so typical of Alsace, to the sumptuous town houses of rich families built in the pure Rhine Renaissance style. They bear witness to the tumultuous history of the town. Above all, Riquewihr was the seat of the powerful Dukes of Wurtemberg, originally from the region of Stuttgart in Germany, princes of this rich and opulent region, who developed and embellished their Alsace stronghold by commissioning the greatest architects of their day, such as Master Schickhardt, whose stone-built masterpieces, gables and friezes, set within the fortress walls, can still be admired today.
From our hotel in Riquewihr, Alsace, stroll through the narrow streets and discover all the magnificent half-timbered houses.
Surrounded by vineyards, the town makes an ideal base to explore the Alsace Wine Route. Pearl of the Alsace vineyards, Riquewihr’s wines have been treasured for more than one thousand years : Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer…
Make an enjoyable family day out to discover warlike fortresses, of which the most famous is of course the le Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg, only an arrow’s flight away. There are animal parks too (storks, otters…) but also Butterflies, the Volerie des aigles birds of prey in flight) and the Montagne des Singes (monkey sanctuary) which will enchant the younger visitors.
Not to be missed, the city of Colmar, only 13km away, a walk around Mont Sainte-Odile, and the celebrated Christmas Market and local artists in Riquewihr itself.
Alsace heritage has not yet revealed all its secrets !
