A spectacular state of the art stone pool, spa and terrace with bubbling stream, adds immeasurable ambiance to the warm and welcoming Summers House, a favorite of many travelers who visit Sonoma Valley from around the world. The house exudes charm. Sweeping views reach to the San Francisco Bay from the expansive deck and living area. Nestled into three, private wooded acres, this gated one-of-a-kind country home, is near Sonoma and Napa wineries, and is just 10 minutes from Sonoma Plaza restaurants, shops, and events. Well equipped kitchen, great dining spaces, comfy beds.
A rustic contemporary country home and architectural gem, Summers House is warm and welcoming. A massive native stone fireplace anchors the living area. Filled with art, antiques, and books, the house garners rave reviews from groups who enjoy its embrace. As one notable author who who enjoyed the house stated, 'Now I have been spoiled; every other place we stayed in after yours seemed well, soulless. That might be so for all our future vacation homes."
Summers House has views that reach to San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge, yet is just three miles, 10 minutes, from Historic Sonoma Plaza. Designed by award winning architect Robert Zinkhan, and beautifully integrated into the natural landscape, it epitomizes his goal: To create “The house as art”.
DESIGN AND DECOR
Summers House features Mexican paver tile floors, a beautifully tiled, handcrafted, fully equipped kitchen, and massive native stone fireplace. The striking fireplace was constructed from cobblestones left behind when quarries on the property provided stones to pave the streets of San Francisco during the 19th century. Massive moss covered boulders sculpt the land. Tumbling historic stonewalls built by Chinese laborers during the 19th century have been restacked to enhance the landscape, while maintaining the property's historical integrity. Native American arrowheads found on the property also provide reminders of the past.
Comfortable and practical leather furnishings complement the home’s natural cedar walls and exposed posts and beams. A large 18th Century European dining table comfortably seats guests. A quarter sawn oak upright piano, a part of the family for more than sixty years, has been restored and tuned.
Three bedrooms, all with lofts, and two bathrooms welcome groups of six (up to or eight with approval.) The master bedroom boasts an extremely comfortable king bed, and Jacuzzi bathtub. The two bedrooms that once housed the Summers children, feature queen sized beds and share a bathroom accessible from both bedrooms. Each bedroom includes a private sink and vanity.
An enormous deck, with a jarrah wood outdoor dining table, spans the south side of the house and captures views of Mt. Tamalpias, the San Francisco Bay, and the Golden Gate Bridge. Views can be enjoyed from the living and dining areas as well. Sunsets are breathtaking.
LOCATION
Wind up one of the most scenic country roads in Sonoma to reach Summers House, located on a private country property in east side Sonoma. Drive through vineyards and climb up into the hills where the house is nestled on a wooded hillside where wildlife abounds. Drive slowly as the road is a hiker's paradise and wildlife crossing. Upon arrival an electronic gate will grant you admission. Fenced in the same cedar which clads its buildings, the property is a private retreat.

Response from the owner We very much enjoyed having this group of extremely gracious, complimentary people. We do strive for cleanliness everywhere - including the deck! We do last minute checks before every arrival. The birds do visit daily and add ambiance to the great outdoor space, along with their calling cards. We look forward to accommodating all of our return guests. The house is just shy of 40 years old. Very original 1970s kept in good condition. Our guests love its charm.

Response from the owner It is a pleasure to accommodate guests and assist them with their enjoyment of our wonderful wine country. We provide a tip sheet that encourages all to stock up on supplies when they arrive in Sonoma before driving up to the house. Suggestions from our guests are greatly appreciated and help us insure great experiences. We will definitely now provide coffee just in case. Bathrooms are stocked with quality liquid soap and ample towels. We ask guests to bring other preferred personal toiletries.
