This beautifully built wooden lodge is situated on a hillside off the quiet Scarborough to Plymouth road. It looks out over mature trees across the valley to the green hills on the other side, and at the rear of the premises there’s a garden laid to lawn with pretty shrubs, at the top of which is a chain link fence and a line of palms giving privacy to the house, its garden and pool. A concrete walkway leads to the pool with its large deck - ideal for barbeques and al fresco dining, a wooden deck along the back of the house, is where you’ll find the washing up area. The deck is roofed, and the large eaves of the house protect it from the heavy rains that are part of the Caribbean experience. The other, much larger part, of the Caribbean experience is the heat and as a result houses need to be airy and breezy. To this effect the main room has a large ceiling fan and at the front there is glass louvers, giving a lovely vista of green trees and hills. Similarly the bedrooms all have fans and a large area of louvers and lattice allowing the rooms to be breezy but protected from rain and private.
The main room comprises a sitting area with comfortable armchairs and sofa, dining area with pretty wooden table and four chairs and kitchen with countertop separating the latter from the sitting room. Both kitchen and sitting room are well equipped with appliances including toaster, kettle, fridge/freezer, cooker, stereo, and wireless internet. There are two bedrooms, one either end of the main room. The large ‘master’ bedroom has an en suite bathroom with a large shower, washbasin, toilet and a baby changing space. Inside the bedroom there is a mosquito netted double bed (4’7” x 6’3”) and a single bed (3’ x 6’3”). The room also has two large louvered doors leading onto a deck, which looks over part of the garden containing two large mango tees. There is a hammock at the end of the deck.
The other side of the sitting room is the second bedroom with a double bed and bunk beds (same sizes as above), all again mosquito netted. Two of the walls have louvered windows and doors, the latter opening onto a deck from which you can step down to the pool for your early morning swim! On this deck you will find the second bathroom. There are stairs from the kitchen area leading down to the third bathroom and a small double bedroom (4’7” x 6’3”), which has louvered doors opening onto a deck. Also downstairs is the well-equipped laundry area.
The pool is absolutely lovely. 20ft by 10ft with two depths (3’6” x 5’), it looks out over mature trees and the hills and is, like the house, a very private space. Both the pool and decked area are fenced off for safety and below the deck is a pool pump room and a pool storage room.
To get to the house there is a small road off the main road, which leads to a concrete driveway running alongside a retaining wall at the base of the hill on which the house is built. There is a gated driveway off this same concrete track, which takes you directly up to the pool area, There is a also a second small gate and steps up to the back of house and the entire garden is surrounded by wire mesh fencing making Mary’s Hill Lodge a great place to stay for families with young children.

My sister and I took her six children all under the age of twelve and they had a blast. The pool was safe enough for the
children since the deepest point was 5ft, they enjoyed all the board games and the beds were very comfortable. We had to piratically drag them away for them to see more of the island, and even then they were eager to get back, they did not want to leave when it was over.

My husband, two kids (6 and 7) and I had such an amazing stay here in april 2014. The lodge is a great base, location wise, from which to explore the island and is the perfect oasis to return to after an outing! The pool is wonderful and was well maintained. The open-air nature of the lodge is just lovely. The kitchen is fairly well-equipped, although the bbq pit is challenging to light! Louise was incredibly welcoming.
If I was pushed to look for improvements that could be made, perhaps the main bathroom could have done with a deep clean and a few additions made to the kitchen utensils - a tea towel would have been fab, as would have oven gloves (we used beach shoes!!) and a decent sharp chopping knife. However, all in all, we loved staying here and would do so again at the drop of a hat.
Our only regrets.. That we didn't write in the visitors book. We should have done, the comments were really helpful, especially from the group of med students that had stayed there for a month prior to our arrival - thanks! And finally that we only visited Stonehaven Bay / Grafton Beach on our last day - fantastic wave bashing / body boarding beach with a really good bar/restaurant (the Seahorse Inn).

This was the third time I have stayed here and the second time in this year. That speaks volumes! Both previous occasions family and friends accompanied my wife and I but this time we returned alone. The landscape on the property is refreshing, spacious and picturesque with both decorative plants and fruit trees. One of the National birds of Trinidad and Tobago the Cocrico, which can only be found in Tobago, occupy the land just beyond the fence opposite the living room. On afternoons I spent many hours, while relaxing by the pool, marveling at them as they move from tree to tree and then fly across the property to trees beyond the car port. Due to its location on the hill, there is extreme privacy and tranquility anywhere you are on the properly secured compound. There are many board games for hours of fun entertainment when tired of the music, cbale and television. The house is well equipped with all the appliances and utensils necessary to feel at home inclusive of washer and dryer. I even grilled fresh fish on the outdoor bar be que pit. Besides the Internet and television, you are also connected to the outside world with a land line phone. The warm, courteous and friendly hose manager is just a call away if needed for any questions and assistance. All the bedrooms have mosquito nets so there's no need to worry about being bitten. Its fantastic to open a door in the bedroom that exits onto your own private pool. The versatility of the place caters to all wants and desires. I will continue to return to this hidden treasure

Mary's Hill Lodge was perfectly suited to our needs. With 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms it had all the amenities and was perfectly childproof for our 1 y/o babe. Laura provided immediate response via email and accommodated our request for a crib. We really appreciated the detailed instructions, the games, the spectacular pool, the nature/woodsy feel of the house and the ample fans and mosquito nets. The location was perfect and within a 10 minute drive to ciao cafe and scarborough. Definitely worth a stay here! There was a bit of street noise/church noise, but we expected that for an open house in the tropics. Thank you!!

Our stay at the Mary's Hill Lodge was very lovely. Everyone loved it. the first day we had plans to do some sightseeing but when we reached at the lodge the pool was so clean and welcoming that we cancelled all plans and stayed in the pool.
I was afraid of mosquitoes but believe it or not it didnt have not one mosquito at all. we had some rain on our stay but that did not stop us from bar b que on the second night. Every morning awaking to the beautiful melody of birds singing and actually seeing different colour birds at the lodge was nice.
The WiFi was a plus we had no problems with the internet. Hot and cold shower worked well and the place was private and nice overall. We will sure be returning next year for a longer stay. Really had a good time :-)

My first stay at Mary's Hill Lodge was amazing i must say. The house is beautiful, the rooms are nice and airy, the surroundings so peaceful. I had the most amazing birthday weekend at Mary's Hill Lodge and will definitely do it again. We spent our first day relaxing by the pool, the guys cooked lunch and my boyfriend angelo played some sweet Reggae music. On our 2nd night we Bar-be-qued to break in my birthday and i was surprised with a beautiful cake decorated with flowers, we had tequila shots, played card games and had a really good time. As ther time drew nearer for us to go home i felt sad. On the Sunday we took a lonnng drive to Englishman's Bay where we got lost going over the hills in Moriah. When we got back to the house i had an early dinner and went to bed as i was tired for all the driving around that day. I felt really sad having to leave Mary's Hill Lodge as i got that feeling that i was at home while i was there. I can't wait for my next vacation to book this beautiful house again. Thank you so much for having us stay at your lovely island home!

Thank you for opening your beautiful home to travelers & families like ourselves! Being in Tobago, and staying at your home, left us feeling perfectly relaxed. I think it was the first time in a long time where we actually weren't looking at each other while on vacation and thinking its time to go home. Our girls came to believe this was our new house and they weren't too pleased when we had to leave. The design of the house was perfect. It was never too hot, the breeze flowed freely throughout the house, and it was easy to control the containment of our kids! Plus, the house was just beautiful to look at! There was a beautiful blue & yellow bird that perched each night on a branch outside of the dinning room window that our kids named "Bob", and a bat that came home every morning to hang from the rafters that our son named "Dylan". The girls just ended up calling him "batman"...but we just loved being surrounded by nature at the Mary's Hill Lodge!
There were no major issues to report other than your phone line (and all the phone lines along Plymouth Rd.) going down. That caused us to lose some internet access. I did notice repair crews tending the lines the last few days we were there. Our favorite beach was Grafton Beach and the Black Rock area. We did most of our shopping at "Coss Cutters" in Scarborough. We found the fresh seafood being sold on the beach in Lambeau thanks to some nice citizens of Scarborough The kids enjoyed a few dinners & Italian ice cream at Ciao near the ferry docks. The drive to Charlottesville was very nice...but the road to Pirate's Bay from Charlottesville was not passable in our under powered rental car. The became a whole separate adventure! We will always hold dear the memories we now have from our time at Mary's Hill Lodge. It was the perfect family get-a-way!

The Lodge itself is beautiful, the perfect holiday spot. It's absolutely huge and has a really nice pool. We went as a couple but it would be great for a group too.
Tobago itself is absolutely stunning and we had hardly any rain, visiting at the beginning of October. The beaches are all fit for a postcard and there's hardly anyone on them - a far cry of looking for 6 inches square to put your towel down in the Med!
We did lots of little trips too and Charlotteville is definitely worth the drive. We had a lovely meal and a chat with the owner of Sharon and Pheb's restaurant.
There are loads of amazing beaches really nearby to the Lodge though so there's no need to venture far!
We'd definitely recommend it and we'll definitely back to Tobago and most certainly Mary's Hill Lodge.

Friend, having decided on Tobago for your next vacation I need not convince you to experience the warmth and excitement of an island that has been blessed by nature.
However, accept my advice when I tell you to look no further for accommodation - MHL is it!
For a few days in September my family and I left our cares at home in the sister-isle of Trinidad to vacation yet again in Tobago.
As frequent visitors to that paradise of an island (no sea, sun and sand for us this time!) we only desired a private, simple yet comfortable place to stay...
Instead we got a wonderful holiday respite at Mary's Hill Lodge!
My dear holiday seeker, Mary's Hill Lodge gives you value for your money in the form of secure spacious grounds, a private pool, ideal location atop a hill, and well-crafted and designed living space. You sense the care and love that went into its construction, you really do.
Laura, Curtis , Louise... Thank you. We really felt at home in your lodge and were saddened to leave. Already plans are in the making for a longer stay in the very near future!

We knew from the start service would've been great as we receive a call from Louise (House Manager) before our arrival to confirm all was well. This this turned out great because we misplaced the contact info.
Louise was very pleasant and offered to make herself available to our needs if required. This was not necessary as the house catered to all our needs.
The kitchen was equipped with a new microwave and BBQ grill, all pots, pans and utensils one may need. The stove and refrigerator though well used still works very good and this was great.
We also liked the open air design of the lodge, did not miss airconditioning at all, the secured walk around verandah, the pool was fantastic, kids did not miss having no tv but you got wi fi, the many books available, particularly, the one on various birds in Trinidad and Tobago that helped us identified some of the many we saw at the lodge (it was fun learning for the kids who took joy in the Cocrico and the sounds they made).
Being in the hills you really appreciate the newness of each day and being one with nature either almost, touching the the clouds when it rained or the sun when it shone but still not far away from the buzz Scarborough (less than 10 mins drive) loved it.
However, we didn't like that rough road up the hill to the house, a good thing it was just about 1min drive and having kids a security gate should be place at the top of stairs inside the house, Louise said it was mentioned and will be looked at.
Thank you for creating such beauty in an already beautiful place, we definitely enjoyed our stay hardly left the lodge and will return again.
Their stay was enjoyable and memorable. ( Family members review

I was unable to visit/stay at the Villa due to an emergency however I was told by my family members who visited and stayed at the Villa that their stay was enjoyable and memorable, the rooms were spacious and comfortable and the children especially enjoyed the pool. I am hoping I can visit/stay at the Villa in the near future so I can experience all that was told to me by my family members during their stay from February 22 through February 25th. Thank you.

Thank you so much for letting us stay at this amazing house on the hill! We had a really great and fun time in Tobago. Went around the Island but our favorite beaches are : Mt Irvine Beach and Pigeon Point Beach. Met Pablo, really nice guy, really helpful. Went on a boat trip with Owen all around the Island up to Castara where we stopped on the beach and had some nice food with the locals. Jemma's kitchen in Speyside - goood food - I want some more of the fruitbread pie - Yum! We met Mark who is lovely. Thanks for all your tips of some great restaurants to go for dinner.
All in all we had a really great time - also went to Sunday School and The Shade. We need more of these clubs in London. Music was Fab.

Well... What can we say? Marys Hill Lodge is incredible.
Amazing views across the valley from its hillside perch. A spectrum of birds passing through to say hello, distant music from the church below and the chorus of lizards and crickets as darkness falls. A wonderful retreat from the heat of the beaches and the perfect place to wind down with a drink and a book, to gently strum the house guitar or to cook up a feast for the family!
We found everything we needed (and more!) for a perfect family holiday. Loads of space for tiny feet to run around and a cool balcony out back to shelter from the heat with a bucket of water and the buckets and spades. Cupboards full of games, colouring pens and papers and plenty plastic cups and little plates for smaller hands. The beach blankets and bags were a nice bonus, too!
The island truly is Paradise. We must have visited 10 different beaches and swam in half a dozen different waterfalls in our two week stay. Parlatuvier bay was fantastic with a jetty to jump off in to the turquoise sea and the east river waterfall just 10 minutes walk away to swim in the pools at the bottom (and top!) of the waterfall. A cool spot for a picnic lunch. Read Mark Puddy's book for the lowdown on waterfall walks or, better still, give him a call and go walking with him.
Mt Irvine and Pirates Bay were great for snorkelling. We even saw a (friendly) shark! The food at the surfers' bar at Mt Irvine is good value and it's a great beach for little ones to run wild (plenty of shade).
All in all, we'd recommend Marys Hill Lodge to all ages. It was great to be away from the tourist areas of Store Bay and Pigeon Point and to get a true taste of the Tobagonian life. Hope to be back soon!

We stayed in Mary's Hill Lodge for three weeks with our two-year-old son and just loved it here. The house is incredible and the feeling of living among the treetops with the birds is wonderful. Despite the 'open' feeling of the house, we didn't feel that we'd missed any luxuries that you'd find in a hotel. In fact, staying here felt like being at home away from home and it was lovely to come back to the house each day after being at the beach or out and about - so much better than staying in an apartment or hotel room. The owners had thought of everything to make our stay there perfect - from the little torch on the house keys for when we got back in the dark to the two-level shower, which our toddler found great fun (despite hating showers at home!). This was our first visit to Tobago but it won't be our last -largely thanks to having stayed in Mary's Hill Lodge. If you're looking for a gorgeous, family-friendly place to stay, which is set back from the bustle but still close enough to everything you could want, this is it. We will definitely be going back.

We spent a week at Mary's Hill Lodge with our 2 children aged 9 and 6. The house was perfect for a family and a real adventure for the children. The open 'tree-house' style of the property meant that we were all continually aware of being somewhere new and quite special.
The children loved the hammock, and seeing the birds from the balcony/lounge. We routinely had Blue-grey Tanagers feeding on the ripening bananas below, plus the occasional hummingbird. One bird was nesting in a tree only about a foot from the edge of the balcony by the main bedroom, and a Mot Mot would sit on a branch and watch me washing up in the outdoor sink. The noisy Chacalacas or 'Coricos' - the national bird of T&T; - never seemed to be far away, and sometimes didn't know the difference between day and night when calling to each other! When combined with the local cockerels crowing pre-dawn, it meant the day started early for children who are used to double-glazed silence! Occasionally evangelical singing drifted up from the church below, and live music from a house further down the hill on some evenings, meant we were never isolated from the real Tobago.
The children loved the geckos wandering around the roof space, and we had a bat share our bedroom one night - it hung above us crunching on a very crunchy insect!
Practically the house is well equipped and the washing machine and tumble drier were useful. There were lots of games, plus some beach things. The bedrooms had fans, although because of the open nature of the house it was never too hot.
We found the location great for exploring the southern end of the island in particular. The house was close to Mount Irvine beach where we found what we considered to be the best snorkelling directly from the beach. Scarborough is only 10 minutes away.
I would really recommend Mary's Hill - somewhere quite different and obviously built with real love and attention to detail to create a very special home.

My husband and I spent 3 nights at Mary's Hill Lodge and had a fantastic time! We had an entire lodge to ourselves, which was perched up on a mountain, equipped with a kitchen and laundry facilities. After staying at a bed-and-breakfast and a spa resort prior to reaching Mary's Hill Lodge, it was a nice change of pace and pleasant surprise to stay at such a different, more remote destination. We felt thoroughly relaxed by the relative seclusion, and when we wanted to go out, we were able to easily catch a ride to closeby Mount Irvine where we bought some of the local catch of the day to bring home and bake in the oven at the lodge. The people we met at the mini marts and shops around Mary's Hill were incredibly friendly and helpful and made our stay even more enjoyable. Staying at the lodge gave us a better feel and appreciation for the local culture and people, which is something that is easily missed when staying at a resort. I highly recommend Mary's Hill Lodge to the independent type of traveler who wants to thoroughly relax and is open to being immersed in the wonderful culture of the people of Tobago.

I don't want to leave! Next guest should check the downstairs to make sure I am not hiding down there!
Everything here is amazing - the house - hats off to Louis and his carpentry skills. The beaches and the fish that live in the glorious clear water just left me in wonder. The animals, birds, lizards, bats and things that just surround you where ever you go. The huge hospitality and friendliness of Mark & Zena and their equally amazing house (Mt.Pelier Cottages).
The weather was so good and I didn't get sunburnt - hooray! Harriet's food stall at number 5 in Scarborough market is a good tip for breakfast - salt fish sandwiches and sweet cocoa tea rule. The winding roads are pure madness and seeing the houses perched at the side of a ravine on massive long poles down to the valley floor lets you marvel at the ingenuity of the house builders out in the country.
I recommend taking a couple of days to drive to Charlotteville as the views on the way are so beautiful - Pirates Bay is the best beach on the Island
Coconut water, Soca music, Mt Irvine lifeguards, the cricket, snorkeling, stag beer (no carib for the blokes - got to be stag!), and fresh fruit and rum smoothies for breakfast, the cocorico's, the singing & music from the church at the bottom of the hill, the lovely people... we loved it here and I am sure we will come again.
Big up to all the Tobagonians and cheers to Laura and Louis for letting us stay in their gorgeous house.
Love Daniel and Maxine x
Please note my star ratings above - it is a self catering house and not a luxury hotel so you have to sort yourself out for food, clean up yourself etc - but we were met at the airport with our car, the house was lovely and clean when we arrived, the bed and furniture was very comfortable and Mark was available to take us on a tour or give us advice on where was good to go. Best holiday i have ever been on and definitley 5 out of 5 overall.

We loved the house, built on a slope with an open veranda. We had hummingbirds and parrots on the door step and at night fireflies in the garden. A magical few days.
It was always a lovely house to return to after a long day out. We felt really at home and very comfortable.
Laura and Louis have built a house that is memorable, in a location that's perfect for getting about from, and close enough to Mt Irvine bay so that a drive for a swim and a beer seems very close.
We have stayed in lots of houses and hotels around the world and feel that this ranks as one of the best. Totally unprententious but with character that made for a memorable two weeks stay.
We loved it..

This house was amazing. It is just perfect. Perfect location, perfect setting. It has everything you need. We made good use of the BBQ and used it to cook freshly caught fish we got from sellers at the beach.
Tobago itself is also great. It has everything - sun, sea and sand - oh, and rain forests and waterfalls! Snorkeling is great and I would recommend a boat trip.
The people are also friendly and welcoming.
All-in-all a lovely house on a lovely holiday. A holiday of a life time!
