Welcome to Casa di Mezzo, a lovely apartment located in the heart of Varenna's old quarter, on the shore of Italy's Lake Como. Just 60 steps from the water, this romantic apartment's rooms look onto two picturesque cobblestone pedestrian-only streets . There is a side view of the lake from this recently renovated second floor apartment (no elevator), situated in a restored building that originated in the 16th century. It is beautifully furnished with the work of local artisans, and ideal for two persons. This cozy & romantic retreat has a queen-sized bed, shuttered windows and high ceilings. It features independent heating and a bathroom with shower. There is a fully equipped, sleek new kitchen with granite countertops.

The apartment is within walking distance of Varenna's villa gardens, historic churches, and fine restaurants. Nearby are Villa Cipressi, and Villa Monastero, two of the lake's most graceful gardens. The lakeside promenade affords unforgettable views of the village and of the opposite shore. The village piazza features two historic churches: San Giorgio, built over an ancient temple, and the church of San Giovanni Battista, one of the oldest on the lake. Varenna's records date it to 769 BC. A former fishing village, it is built on its original Roman layout, and was fortified in the middle ages. The apartment's street still retains features from the middle ages. Ancient Castello Vezio, said to have been the last home of Theolinda, Queen of the Lombards, can be reached by a 20-minute climb up a steep footpath and affords spectacular views.

Lake Como is located in northern Italy, where Italy meets the Alps. Varenna is in its mid section, one hour by car, train or bus from Milan. It is 4 hours from Venice or Florence. Protected by the Alpi Orobie mountains, Varenna has a mild microclimate, with palm trees and lush tropical flowers that rim the lake. Winters are slightly warmer, and summers cooler than the rest of Italy.
