Description from the owner
Skerry cottage is a beautifully renovated lighthousekeeper's cottage at the base of Buchan ness lighthouse, the most north-easterly point in Scotland.
Buchan Ness lighthouse was built by Robert Stevenson, and is one of the few remaining working lighthouses in Scotland.
Skerry cottage has a bright ,airy galley kitchen, with cooker, grill, fridge, microwave, and coffee- maker. The kitchen table seats 4 comfortably.Great place to sit out and have your morning coffee, and also to sit in the evening, with perhaps a glass of wine, to watch the lighthouse beams revolving slowly above your head.
The kitchen door leads onto a decking...Read more

Edinburgh, United KingdomAlready planning our next visit
Left on 04/02/2013 for a stay in March 2013
My family stayed for 2 nights in the fabulous cottage. The break was a surprise for my 8 year old who loves lighthouses and didn't know that we were staying in one until we pulled up at the gates. It was a magical experience for him. The accommodation is clean and cozy with a peat fire in the living room and plenty of games and Dvds to keep us all entertained in the evening. The kids loved exploring the rock pools out front and would have played there for hours. The family staying at the cottage next door said that it was their 3rd visit to Buchan Ness Lighthouse and I can certainly see why people keep coming back. We can't wait to escape there for a long weekend again.

A really clean and comfortable cottage with everything you would need for self catering. A very warm welcome from Sheila with flowers and chocolates was most appreciated. Unfortunately the decking had been damaged in a recent storm and we were unable to use it, but Sheila said it was due for repair, however we did manage to get up the lighthouse with a spectacular view. Overall this is a lovely peaceful place with a cosy peat burning fire and we will return. Ian Marion Craig and aldo

Banff, Scotland, United KingdomOne of the best short breaks ever!
Left on 11/17/2012 for a stay in November 2012
We stayed at Skerry cottage for 4 nights & loved every minute of it! My partner & I were wanting a wee break away to do nothing but relax. & we did. The cottage itself was lovely & clean & had everything that you need for self catering. The peat fire was the best bit of it all & I actually lit a fire myself on the 3rd day. (Was the best one of the whole 4 days, ha!). The location was amazing. The lighthouse & the cottages are on a wee island so you have to travel over a bridge to get to them which made it even more exciting. Our own wee island for a few days! The weather wasnt fantastic but we never ventured out much. That was the whole idea of the holiday. We spent most of our time in front of the fire relaxing. The double bed was comfier than the one we have at home which I thought would be hard to beat but it did. Wasnt wanting to leave Skerry cottage. Sheila & the cleaner were lovely too. 10 out of 10 for this place!

Stowe, VermontA Dark and Stormy Night
Left on 09/09/2012 for a stay in August 2012
My wife and I spent one night at Skerry Cottage. It was a dark, stormy and windy night - and it was fabulous. We had a little difficulty gaining access to the property but once we tracked down Shelia she was very cheerful and accommodating. Skerry is a 2 bedroom, self contained cottage with separate living room and kitchen. We made our own peat fire and hunkered down for the night. We woke to glorious sunshine and crashing waves off the back deck - perfect

HeidelbergWunderschöne Ferienwohnung am Leuchtturm
Left on 08/19/2012 for a stay in August 2012

We stayed at this amazing place only for one night. It was just after Princess anne's visit. I don't know whether it was extraordinarily good because of her visit but, if I visit aberdeenshire again, definitely it will be the accommodation I would book. I felt like I was at home. The bedrooms, kitchen and the living room have everything you need and actually even more than you can guess.
The hosting was so friendly. The lady who welcomed us was so cute and helpful. She suggested the highlights on surrounding and also on our way to aberdeen and then to Dundee.
There is not much famous places to visit nearby but for a romantic or nature holiday, it is one of the bests I have ever seen.
If you like taking photos, relaxing or may be watching sunset or walking through hills, I suggest this place with sure! -

This was our first trip to Scotland and Skerry Cottage was the 1st place we stayed during our 3 week trip (and the best place we stayed). Sheila was there to greet us on arrival. The property was outstanding. Wonderful photography opportunity. Our son is 3 years old and the property was perfect for a toddler. We will be booking the cottage for our next trip to Scotland. The cottage was spacious, clean, and lovely. There is so much to do around the area.

Left on 10/22/2011 for a stay in October 2011
Stayed at Skerry Cottage for 3 days. It is quiet and the deck facing out to sea is fabulous. You can watch the sunrise as well as sunset. Loads of seabirds and photo opportunities regardless of the weather. However turn your ahead around and the largest powerstation in Scotland is in the background and that does somewhat spoils the ambiance. The cottage itself is neat, spacious and decorated to a high standard. It is comfy, homely and the real fire in the living room is very effective. Fridge is very small so don't bring lots to cook - just buy locally. No dishwasher. Cleaning overall was very good but some misses- e.g. shelving with dust and bits on it in the kitchen, crumbs in the cutlery drawer etc.. small points but enough to make you feel others have been there before and left their mark. Nice places around to visit such as Fraserburgh Lighthouse Museum and you can go into the lighthouse; cliff top walks to see the Bullers O'Buchan and also Slains Castle; walk along Cruden Bay and drives to small coastal villages such as Pennan (where they filmed Local Hero) and Crovie show you how beautiful the coastline of this area is.

Owner
Thank you for a very professional review.
Really pleased you enjoyed your stay with us.
Everyone (including myself) enjoys the feeling of peace when you're on the island, looking out on the sea and rocks, and for me, especially, looking up at the beams going round above your head at night ,is always amazing.
I think we're the most accessible of the Northern Lights, which means that, like the power station, we're part of a vibrant north-east community, based on fishing and all the amazing oil-based technology associated with the North Sea.( It also means that you're only a few minutes away from the local shops if you run out of wine or fancy a fish supper !)
I must apologise that you found some dust and crumbs in the kitchen- I checked as soon as i read your review, and could find none, but be assured, I'll be extra vigilant next time you visit us !- Only sorry that if you'd mentioned at the time, I could have done something about it, as we want our guests to be 100% happy with their stay. -

Left on 10/08/2011 for a stay in September 2011
This was our first trip to Scotland, and staying at the Buchan Ness Lighthouse was the highlight of our two week trip. When we arrived and opened the door to the Dundonnie cottage, my husbands jaw dropped. It's beautifully restored, actually nicer than our home in California!
The owner, Sheila, was very attentive and so friendly, even brought a gift basket one stormy evening for our 20th wedding anniversary! We loved our sturdy, cozy retreat by the fire, watching the beam from the lighthouse at night. There were even wonderful crocheted throws to curl up with in the living room! It was wonderful having an island to ourselves - so private!
We were fortunate enough that the lighthouse keeper came by one day to service the lighthouse and let us accompany him up inside!
My husband is still talking about this place . . .we didn't want to leave, and hope to go back someday! -

Myself and 3 other family members stayed at Skerry Cottage in June'2011. Sheila Priest and family were just wonderful, made us feel like family coming to visit. The cottage is decorated with all the little extras, we hated to leave and hope to visit again. Best place ever to stay, very clean, lots of privacy. I would recommend to everyone to stay there if they can, best value, best location. Owners made themselves available to us during our entire stay. We left our hearts in Scotland...

From the warmest of welcomes to the beauty of the seascape the time we spent on Buchan Ness Island was fantastic. You enter the cottage and immediately realise you have made the right choice. Clean, tidy well-furnished and nicely decorated. All rooms are designed to make you feel very much at home in terms of comfort. Functionally you are provided with everything in the kitchen which is large and has a family dining table.
The location is on the edge of a small village and the nearest town is about 4 miles away which has all basics like grocery shops and bakers etc. There is also a selection of restaurants worth checking out.
Wander by foot or drive the cost roads by car you will not be disappointed but may be breath taken by the stunning views and tranquillity of the coastal hamlets and villages.
Further away, but only 25 minutes or so by car is aberdeen where you have everything a city can offer including theatre, shows, gigs and large modern promenade with fun fare, amusements, crazy golf and a campus of restaurants to suit all.
We visited twice in 2010. My son is 11 and he won't stop asking when we are going back. My daughter is 17 and she spent most of the week in august out on the rocks sketching and drawing the view was so fantastic.
You will not be disappointed - enjoy -

this was our 7th visit in 2 years so that speaks for itself.Everything about the place is great. The cottage is really lovely and it has everything you need.Sheila makes you very welcome and is very friendly. We spend lots of time watching the ships passing up and down the sea also watching the seals when they appear. The whole experience is very relaxing although there is plenty to do and see. If you go here for a holiday I am sure you would soon return. i know we will.

The best thing about the cottage is the attentive one-on-one service offered by the owner, Sheila. She is friendly, helpful and makes you feel at home. The cottage is adorable and has everything you need. It is relaxing and feels like home right away. The location is close to the village but separated by a bridge so no traffic noise. The only sounds are from the waves and the gulls. The feeling of seclusion combined with everything else makes for a great night's sleep. My only wish would be to have huge windows on all sides without destroying the authenticity of the building.

We stayed for a long weekend at Buchaness Lighthouse Cottages. The booking process was personal, fast and simple - exactly as it should be. Sheila was quick to respond to any questions I had about the cottage and pass on information about the local area. Checking in was a breeze, Sheila was on hand to show us around and answer any questions. The cottage itself was beautiful, fantastic kitchen with all facilities you would ever require, a cosy living room with a ready to light coal fire, tv, comfy chairs and a window seat overlooking the sea with high powered binoculars! The bedrooms were a delight, the beds oh so comfy, the bathroom was excellent, big bath, rainfall shower head, heated towel rail and plenty of quality cleaning products. There were additional little touches that make a difference - chocolate lighthouses on our beds, fresh flowers, fishing rods we could use, books on local history, guides on things to do, tea, coffee and milk to get us going. I cannot recommend this place highly enough - stunning coastal views, amazing walks around the rocks, peace and quiet, total relaxation, the coast line to the north is some of the most stunning you would see anywhere in the world. My only gripe was having to leave! In fact Sheila was on hand to wish us goodbye and was even good enough to give me a book on lighhouse accomodation free of charge on learning of my interest in staying in them. Congratulations Sheila, we will be back again very soon!

Left on 11/04/2010 for a stay in September 2010
We stayed at Skerry cottage for a weekend in September. The cottage is lovely, spacious and very comfortable. Sheila was there to welcome us on arrival, to hand over the key and show us around. There is a lovely open fire in the living room with coal and wood supplied. The little extra touches in the cottage really make it homely and a pleasure to stay here.
What really transfixed us though was the lighthouse - we spent much time outside at night, on the decking area watching the beam go round and round, sweeping across the ocean. Stunning and totally mesmerising. We were fortunate enough to have good weather, and to sit out on the decking in the sun having breakfast and see dolphins go by, is really something everyone should experience! We'll definitely be back.
