Outside rustic, but inside very beautiful. had to take the fisrt 2 hrs of our vaca to wash dirty glasses and dishes that were put back into the cabinets dirty. Also to scrub out the kitchen freezer with vinegar and water to rid the very strong shrimp odor out and then go buy baking soda to place in freezer and refrigator...After that we had a wonderful week!!! great location, plenty of room, very comfortable. Raleigh, NCDelightful Beach Cottage!
Left on 11/09/2011 for a stay in November 2011
My Mom, sisters, daughter and I stayed in this beautiful cottage for a 5-day off-season get away. It is a beautifully decorated and well-appointed cottage (large kitchen with plenty of plates, glasses, cutlery, etc.). It actually has 5 bedrooms rather than 4, with the 5th bedroom housing two single beds.
The ping-pong room, card table, and multiple TVs provided hours of enjoyment for all of us. We even enjoyed several warm, beautiful days on the front porch rockers -- in November! We loved the sunny breakfast room, too!
The owners have done a great job with the renovations. They made the most out of every nook and cranny. This would be an excellent beach house for any family of any age. We will definitely be back in future years!Response from Emerald Isle Realty, Inc - 02/01/2012

My husband and I went alone this time but,we love ganavan sands. We go the same week every year and have met nieghbors that do the same, we look foward to seeing them each year. This year we met new friends next door he just came back from Iraq and his only wish was to fish in the surf!! My husband had the pleasure of teaching him to fish(and his wish came true) he caught some. The weather was beautiful the water warm and the company of new friends made this a memorable vacation. We were able to show appreciation to someone in the military for fighting for our freedom!!! Who would of thought!!

I have been coming to emerald isle for many years and have loved every place we ever rented from you. I always come with my mother and father, they are getting on in years so the time we spend there together is priceless. This year we were able to bring our new dog, a rescue dog that my parents love dearly. She is now a part of our family and Ganavan Sands was the perfect plaace for us to renew our spirits, to be still and know that God is in control and has blessed us over the years, not with material things but our bonds with each other and your beautiful house was the perfect place.

Left on 09/22/2010 for a stay in September 2010
This recently refurbished cottage is a great combination of a bright, open floorplan upstairs (with hardwood floors and lots of clean, new windows) and "rustic cottage" pine wood walls downstairs. Family-friendy, and you can bring your pet! Very convenient to the beach. We loved every minute of our stay.

The house was OK but when we arrived it had a mildew odor. Upon investigating I found an old moldy mattress and pillows in an unfinished part of the basement. It would help if they were removed.

Thank you so much for taking the time to fill out this review!
I'm very sorry that you had an odor in the home! I'm glad that you were able to investigate and locate the source. Thanks to excellent communication between our guests and our realty I know that maintenance was able to remove that mattress and pillows very quickly when you reported it to them!

Oak Ridge, TNIts Emerald Isle - its always nice there!
Left on 10/05/2009 for a stay in September 2009
this was my 4th year at EI but my 1st year at Ganavan Sands - we ended up deciding to get married while on vacation and the house was the perfect place to put up the few guests we had, they were all happy to have a beach house to stay at and there was plenty of room for 8 people plus 4 more that came the rehersal dinner!
I must admit that the upstairs is much nicer than the downstairs, very roomy downstairs but the ping pong table was broken and all the paddles were in very poor condition. One bedroom downstairs has no vent for AC and also in that room we found sticky rat traps kinda hid in the duct work (no way i was staying in that room!)
I understand that was the old EI Realty office, they've done a nice job of converting it to a home - except the front door, a more conventional house door would look a lot better!
thanks again for another great vacation!

Hamilton, NJGreat time at Ganavan Sands!
Left on 07/22/2009 for a stay in July 2009
My family rented Ganavan Sands for a week in July this year. It turned out to be a perfect place for our family. I wouldn't recommend it to a family with small children, as there are a lot of steps inside and out. Our family is all teenagers and 20's--so the convenience to the beach access was great! The house suited us to a tee! The kids had fun playing ping pong on the table downstairs. The only problems we had were that the televisions were not great, and my husband had to pound a few nails down on the deck outside that were pretty dangerous. The price was right, it turned out to be a wonderful week, and next year we plan to rent for two weeks!!!

Left on 04/22/2009 for a stay in April 2009
My family was in need of a getaway. We lost our mother in September and my father is alone for the first time in his life. The vacation was to usher in the spring and welcome a new beginning for us all. The Ganavan Sands aided us perfectly. The gameroom downstairs keep the children busy for much of the time since it was a tad bit chilly to be on the beach. There was ample space for us to fellowship and invite other family up for a day of fishing. Dad caught over 100 sea mullets. That made the whole trip worth while. The wireless connection and the unlimited phone access were two welcomed amminities. The washer and dryer sold me also. I will never rent another property without one. The price was great even in this economy. I have vacationed on Emerald Isle on three occations and I always use Emerald Reality and have recommended them to others. The check in and out are simple and quick. When I have voiced concerns or had any mainteanance problems, they have been sent professionals who are respectful and knowledgeable. Thank you for a great vacation.

Left on 03/02/2009 for a stay in September 2008
We have stayed at Ganavan Sands 2 years in a row. We love the community, the house is roomy and comfortable. Our 2 daughters and their husbands came last time and we enjoyed the beach and local restaurants. The seafood market down the street also got our business we cooked our own feast! My husband loved the fishing, at one point he had the biggest shark on his line just jumping and spinning until he broke the line. The show was awsome! Relaxing in the house every evening with our little dogs is also a highlight something you normally cannot do on a vacation. We will definately go back to the same house it's close to the beach and the sound is also in view. Emerald Isle Realty is very helpful.

Left on 02/02/2009 for a stay in September 2007
We spent a wonderful week at Ganavan Sands. There were four adults, three children and a dog and we had room to spare. The first floor recreation room with bedrooms and bath were perfect for the kids to get away and play video games (when not swimming of course) which left the upper level for quiet reading and relaxation. The house is just across the street and beach access couldn't have been easier. I highly recommend Ganavan Sands and am planning another week there this year.

The biggest problem was mold in the ground floor rooms. There were no noticable problems upstairs. (This was in 2007, and may have been repaired since then. The folks at Emerald Isle Reality seem conscientious about their properties. But I would check the ground floor before renting it.))

Mike,
Like the guest below, our ground floor properties at the beach do tend to be a bit more damp. Our housekeeping department has been alerted to be extra vigilant in these homes. Thanks for your comments. -

Chagrin Falls, OhioDisappointed in rental
Left on 01/28/2009 for a stay in July 2006
We spent a week in this rental home during the summer of 2006.
We had stayed in other rental homes at Emerald Isle during many
years of previous visits and had a wonderful time. However, I was
disappointed in the Ganavan Sands rental. It is my least favorite of
any property we have rented.
During our 2006 vacation we had 5 children under the age of seven
and two of them were infants. Upon our arrival, the glass door
leading into the home from the deck had been shattered and poorly
repaired with duct tape. I informed the rental office that day that it
needed repaired as it was the main door and would constantly be
used by both children and adults. I called the rental office again
later in the week when it still was not repaired. It was never
repaired while we were there and I was nervous about it the entire
stay as I was afraid it was going to break on one of the children.
While the kitchen was updated and the two upstairs bedrooms were
fine & comfortable, the downstairs bedrooms and bath were
unpleasant. The bedroom closest to the bathroom had mold in the
closet and the bathroom was disgusting.
I made the reservations for this property for my family including
my brother and his children and it was their first visit to Emerald
Isle. I was embarrassed and disappointed with the property and felt
terrible that he and his family barely spent any time at the rental
because of the conditions and concern for their children's safety.
If the door were repaired and the mold removed, I still don't think
this property is suitable for small children. It should only be rented
to adults and families with teenagers.Response from Emerald Isle Realty, Inc - 01/29/2009

We are truly sorry that you had a disappointing stay but I am happy to report that Ganavan Sands has been recently refurbished in 2008 with new mattresses in many of the bedrooms and bedspreads. The door was a very important issue and our research into your stay showed us that due to the age of the door it was difficult to get replacement parts. I'm sorry this wasn't communicated well to you at the time. The door has since been fixed. Please contact me and I'll be happy to discuss this with you further as we'd like to offer you a discount on a future stay. Jeff Lessey, Director of Reservations jlessey@eirealty.com
