Kailua, HIA Great House for a Family Reunion
Left on 11/25/2011 for a stay in November 2011
This was the perfect house for my family's needs. The house is clean, beautiful and very spacious. We came for a family wedding and it was the ideal meeting place for all of relatives. I would definitely recommend it.

60539Never again With This Owner
Left on 11/15/2011 for a stay in October 2011
We rented this house for a week in October 2011. Our experience was so opposite from the other reviews that it makes me wonder who writes them. We have rented houses before but from management companies, not private owners on Homeaway. Our experience was so bad that we will never rent from an owner again.
Once the contract was signed and the deposit sent there was no more working with us on details. The owner became extremely hard to work with. He was so inflexible he really started to make our life miserable. He lowered his prices $300 after we signed and refused to let us have the discounted price that everyone after us got. He made us pay for a wire transfer for the balance of the money because the 30 day payment ended up on a holiday and he wouldn’t accept it on the 31st day by priority mail. We paid for a week and only stayed 6 days but he still wouldn’t let us in before 4:00 the first day. Supposedly because of the cleaning crew but we drove up to the house at 2:30 and there was no one there. What would have been the harm in letting us in?? Totally a control freak and basically just a jerk about everything.
The house itself didn’t live up to the hype it was given on the Internet. It was probably a beautiful house when built. It has deteriorated and needs work. A complete wall repair and paint job inside is desperately needed along with the house needing a major cleaning. You can tell it is only surface cleaned these days-bugs and cobwebs in the window sills and light fixtures, dirt in the kitchen drawers, windows filthy, dust everywhere except where the rag reached without moving the knickknacks. They really need a new cleaning crew. None of the beds had mattress pads, the sheets (which were not quality as the description said in fact one set had some kind of bleach stains that were disgusting) wouldn’t stay on the beds and the mattresses were stained. The kitchen towels were gross –we refused to use them on anything.
The kitchen was not stocked well. It said spices were included but we couldn’t even come up with salt and pepper. One old cookie sheet to put things on, hardly a pitcher could be found. The dishwasher does not clean well, it either needs work or replaced. But then there were broken things all over the house. The patio door couldn’t be used, one of the bathroom cabinet doors was broken, the tv remote was a joke, one of the closets had doors that were broken. There were signs all over the house that said “under repair, don’t use”. My elderly father took a look around and said “the owner is really milking this house isn’t he. Taking the money out and not putting any back in.” The air conditioner wasn’t allowed to be turned down under 78 degrees “or it could freeze up”. It was really hot in the house so ended up turning it down anyway. You spend all that money to rent a house in Phoenix and can’t be comfortable?? Evidently the air conditioning was something else that needed work.
Another note said we couldn’t wear shoes on the carpet. Well it was so dirty and worn it really didn’t matter. We finally just had to laugh when we turned the jetted tub on in the master bath and dirt flew out and into the water everywhere. The bbq grill was broken and my husband spent several hours of his own time trying to get it to work. Really great way to spend your vacation. Finally had to get a new regulator for it from Home Depot, the owner paid us back, but I find it interesting that all the other reviews said he was so wonderful to work with when we had to struggle with everything on our own. We never saw him while there and he certainly never called and asked how things were going. We were scared to say much of anything until we got our deposit back for fear we wouldn’t get it, even though we left that house in better condition than we found it. I’m also really upset that we couldn’t use the swimming pool in the back yard because it was too cold that week. We were never given the option of heating it for $50 a day or we might have done that just to get some use out of it.
Our 3 families that stayed there agreed this house was a bad deal, made worse by a rigid owner who had no regard for us.
