Description

Pretty East Lodge is a perfect romantic getaway set on a private country estate with stunning views across tranquil Luce Bay to the front and woodland to the rear.

The former gatehouse of the 18th century Ardwell House on the Ardwell Estate is a listed building which has been lovingly converted into an attractive, one-bedroomed cottage.

Guests can enjoy free access to the Estate grounds -- a popular visitor attraction due to its range of exotic flora, walled garden, ponds and enchanting woodland walks. Keen anglers also have the opportunity to fish in the Estate's loch, which is well stocked with good-sized rainbow trout.

The Lodge has a small modern fitted kitchen, a lounge/dining area with open log fire (wood provided), a double bedroom and a bathroom with bath and shower.

We have recently installed central heating for instant heat but most guests enjoy the open fire and we keep the cottage well stocked with coal, wood from the surrounding estate -- and firefighters. In some circumstances we can arrange for it to be lit an hour before you expect to arrive.

To the rear is an enclosed south-facing garden with wooden decking and garden furniture perfect for sitting out and enjoying the views.

Lettings are arranged on the Center Parcs model: changeover days ate Mondays and Fridays.

The Ardwell Estate is located halfway down the most westerly peninsula of Galloway, known as the Rhins, a Gaelic word meaning headlands. The Lodge has views across Luce Bay to the Galloway Hills and from the kitchen you can see the nearby Chapel Rossan Bay and, on a clear day, the Isle of Man. The Rhins is only three miles wide at this point and the "back shore" or west coast offers stunning coastal scenery with a series of cliffs and secluded bays offering glorious sunsets and views across to Ireland.

The area is famous for its wild landscapes and warm, mild climate making it home to spectacular gardens such as Ardwell and the world famous Logan Botanical Gardens. The geography of the region makes it a haven for a wide range of wildlife and a popular spot for birdwatchers and anglers. From the Lodge a new path leads less than 200 yards away to the shore where walkers can take the Mull of Galloway Coastal Path from the Lodge 11 miles to Scotland's most southerly point, the Mull of Galloway, with spectacular views of Ireland and the Isle of Man on a clear day. Just outside the secluded garden is the famous Murder Stone, marking the site of a 16th Century murder.

Although the Lodge is self-catering, the area has some fantastic places to eat. The village of Sandhead, with its seven miles of beautiful sandy beaches is three miles away, is home to a pub/ restaurant and a tearoom. The picturesque fishing village of Portpatrick is only a short drive away with several pubs and restaurants offering a good range of high quality food, especially seafood.

Further afield, the Galloway Forest Park is famous for its dark skies, and Glentrool is one of the most stunning glens in the whole of Scotland with its viewpoint from Bruce's Stone high above Loch Trool. Anyone who lives in a town will be struck by how much clearer the stars are on a clear night.

The cottage is only one-bedroomed so we can only accept a maximum of two guests and one pet, or at a push two small pets. If you have children and pets then our beachside Holiday Chalets 200 yards away may suit you better. They can also be found on Holiday Lettings (6125323)

“Excellent cottage”

Reviewed 10 Apr 2022

We stayed in East Lodge in Ardwell, Dumfries and Galloway. Lovely cottage in an excellent location. Very cosy with a well equipped kitchen. Perfect for the two of us with the added bonus of almost daily visits from a red squirrel. Location is good for walking and cycling. Plenty of walking in the grounds of Ardwell House and surrounding area. Would highly recommend this lovely cottage.

Response from the owner Thanks for the kind words. Yes we did look at wifi and it was quite pricy. As I said to you 4G normally works down there for those who need to be online. For a lot of people no wifi is part of the attraction!

“Peace, tranquilty and comfort - perfect for us”

Reviewed 2 Oct 2016

Well located for all that the Mull of Galloway has to offer; lots of gardens within a 10 mile radius - and wonderful Port Patrick just down the road. Campbells restaurant is worth the visit alone! A well appointed cottage, with everything we could have wished for. (We don't tend to do the laundry when we are on holiday!) A nice touch to br greeted with a bottle of wine and a bowl of chocolates. Being introduced to one of the estate staff was a huge bonus - he topped up our log store for the cooler September evening to make sure we didn't run out.
