“Great place to stay.” Loved the place. We spent 3 nights at Karetu Downs with our 3 children. The farm cottage is fantastic, roomy, warm and has a great kitchen. Bruce and Karen were very friendly and welcoming. Perfect spot for our horses, to stay and ride. As the river was up our kids also had fun in their kayaks. Not far from home, but far enough away for a decent break.

“What a refreshing, adventurous time it was at the Aoraki Cottage” The cottage was a great location for us to drive to outdoor tourist scenery, including Mr. Cook and the Lord of the Rings filming backdrops and snowboarding/skiing. What a blast! We also enjoyed simply relaxing at the cottage. A couple of days we preferred to sleep in, make breakfast, walk around the spectacular farm, and wind down in the spa. It surpassed our hopeful expectations, and we were thrilled to spend our honeymoon at the Aoraki Cottage.

“Comfortable stay with friendly, helpful hostess, in a quiet subu” We stayed with Pam on two separate nights. She made us very welcome in her lovely modern house, with tea and home-made biscuits on arrival and excellent breakfasts. She was interesting to talk to and gave good advice on where to eat in the city - and made a booking for us. The room and bathroom were spotless and very comfortable but a bit small, especially when, like us, you have luggage for a two month trip! The location is a pleasant quiet suburb, very convenient for the airport and a short drive into the city. We weren't too impressed with the choice of local restaurants but eventually found a very good Thai one. We'd definitley recommend Fendalton to others like us who are passing through, or who like to stay outside the city centre, but it's probably a bit far out to be a convenient base for city sightseeing - it's not walking distance.

About Canterbury Region
Christchurch, the primary metropolitan center of the Canterbury area, is a charming and highly livable city, offering the best of both small-town friendliness and navigability with urban energy, culture, and verve. The warm hearted locals here speak English in a kind of mesmerizing dialect and are proud of their town for some very obvious reasons.
Beyond the hills of Bank Peninsula, the coast of New Zealand is a romantic treasure trove of secret beaches and hidden bays, and the view from boat gliding along the shore reveals glimpses of protected wildlife occupying a seemingly untouched green world. North of the city are vineyards and further inland, the fairy tale mountains are a wonderful place to hike during the summer and ski during the snowy season.
Here are a few suggestions to keep you busy in the Canterbury area:
- Mountain biking: This is a great way to explore the turquoise lakes of Mackenzie Country. Rent a bike in town or bring your own.
- Skiing: Mount Hutt is a great place to ski during the winter. Find a guide or local who can point out Mt. Cook, also called Aoraki, the tallest peak in New Zealand.
- Whale watching in Kaikoura: Whale watch or arrange to swim with dolphins here.
- Wildlife spotting: Take a kayaking trip or wildlife spotting adventure by boat.
- Spa relaxation: Head to Hanmer Springs, immerse yourself in the famous thermal pools, and forget your worries.
- Hiking in Arthur's Pass National Park: Keep your eyes open for New Zealand's terrific native Kea, a species of parrot.
The best way to appreciate Christchurch is to rent a cabin in the mountains and stay long enough to experience a full season. If you only have a week or two to spend here, book a vacation rental in town and experience the best of natural wilderness close to a thriving city. By the time you leave, you may already be planning a return trip.
