Mapua Heights Cottage - "A gem among gems", Nelson

Mapua cottage

2 bedrooms / 1 bathroom / sleeps 4

“Waking and looking down through the sun-tipped flax” We were lucky to find the Mapua cottage, perched on top of the Mahana ridge, successfully hidden by maturing native bush. Kenneth and Vivy welcomed us, though we arrived late, with a fire in the pot belly, bread and coffee set for breakfast. We were woken by Ken calling a young doe up to the fence to get her breakfast, and the glorious Nelson sunshine forced us out of bed. I thoroughly recommend the Mapua Cottage as a haven for travellers and only wish we could have prolonged our stay.

“Beautiful cottage, magic location” We had a fabulous stay at Karaka Cottage. The cottage is lovely - it has everything you could need and is beautifully furnished - a very stylish 'kiwi bach'. The location on the estuary at Mapua is stunning too - totally tranquil, but still close enough to everything (a couple of minutes to the wharf at Mapua, which has some good places to eat) and about a 20 minute drive back to Nelson. It's also on the way to abel Tasman of course - but we were just in the mood to relax, so were quite happy just to enjoy the cottage surrounds. The outside bath was amazing, with just the sound of the many estuary birds for company in the evening. Just perfect! And in the morning, the sun streamed in from across the water - which was gorgeous on a late winter morning. (the cottage is very warm in the winter too - has a great wood burner). Thanks so much - we'll definitely be back!

“What makes a good holiday.” Trying to determine where to stay when planning a holiday is extremely hard when you have never been to a spot. Mary & Peter's was like finding a winning loto ticket in your pants pocket. It is a new place and they have all the added touches such as big screen TV, Movies, Stereo, BBQ and the best of all the most magnificent view you could ever want. We actually felt that we did not have to leave the unit as you could never get a better view and the sun was shining the entire time. They have added a great deal of personal touches to the place that make it a pleasure to stay at. Your hospitality was outstanding and there is nothing negative we could ever add to this experience. Gentlemen this is the place to take your partner for a nice glass of wine and sit on the balcony and watch the view.

“What magnificient days - What a breathtakig view - What a superb” We have truly enjoyed our four-day trip to Kina Beach. We were staying right in the main building of the sprawling luxury estate. The morning swim in the beautifully designed 25 m pool - overlooking the gorgeous Kina Beach gave our days a very special beginning. The breakfasts on the spacious terrace with view on the magnificent vineyards and the incomparable sight on the sea, made it difficult for us to break up in order not to linger longer. The excursions in the area are varied and wide-ranging; it would be an unforgivable sin, to be there and have not explored, the outstanding abel Tasman National Park with all its natural treasures and its superb impressiveness. A hang glider flight over Kina Beach was simply breath-taking and unforgettable. The trip to the most northern point of the South Island to Farewell Split with silent walks on the lengthy stretched beach plus resting on the sand dunes was healing balm for our souls. The crowning end of our perfect days was the jointly prepared dinner in the luxury kitchen of the property and of course the comfortably relaxing bath in the well-tempered indoor whirlpool. A holiday location where "nothing is must but anything is possible". From golfing on the idyllic 9-hole course - only a two minutes' drive or kayaking in the beautiful Kina Bay, shopping at the nearby Nelson to unforgettable excursions to abel Tasman- everything was just fantastic, but the next time we will stay longer to admire the wonderful nature, and the unique ambience of the estate more extensive. “A Fabulous Place” On arrival we received the warmest of greetings from our fabulous host Jenny and Graham, who then left us in luxurious peace, only to reappear again to offer full and warm assistance on departure. The accommodation was faultless. Jenny's thoughtful touches though out the apartment immediately put us into holiday mood, and we wanted for nothing. Our only concern was the steepness of the access to the apartment, and no off street parking.

“wonderful” we spent 9 days there and we loved every day - even the 2 it was pouring. (so we could light the fireplace!) it is a very cozy little cottage, totally private, very clean, perfectly equipped (esp. the kitchen), great beds to sleep well, we loved the retro interior and the views from all windows - even the toilet one ;) we stayed there with a 1 year old and she liked it just like us. the location is excellent because it's right by the water, which is coming and going twice a day ;-), very close to nice little mapua, also close to motueka (e.g. big supermarkets) and also abel tasman ntl. park, beaches etc. nelson is also not too far. the owner was very helpful and friendly and we'd definitely come more often ... if we didn't live on the other side of the globe.

“Perfect villa” I stayed 7 nights. The views are magnificent, the villa is spotless and modern and nothing was too much trouble for Nicola when I needed something. The villa is 5 minutes by car away from the town in the hills and it is the best location to be in nelson. It is a good base to go across the coast and perfect for relaxing and watching the world go by.

Stunning views of Nelson with a swimming pool!

Nelson cottage

2 bedrooms / 1 bathroom / sleeps 5

“Eco friendly, warm and helpful hosts, outstanding location and v” We, a family of two parents and two college aged kids, stayed in the cottage in mid September, 2012. We arrived after having been rained on at the glaciers. ..and had wet clothes. Gina and Martin offered to let us use their dryer . ..(there is a washer in the cottage), and ended up drying and folding our clothes! This was above and beyond. The house was designed for maximum ecologically benefit. The heater is wood fired. . .but we were perfectly warm, although stormy outside. We appreciated the Vanners leaving tons of information and brochures about everything, from hiking, to eating. Also, they looked up things for us and gave recommendations that helped tremendously. The cottage is truly private ..but we were always treated well when we went to the "neighbors" to get info or to talk. We would have loved to stay longer. Martin-the crossing was not as bad as predicted. .but thanks so much for the heads-up on the storm warnings! Would definitely stay again.

Serenity and comfort awashed us at Villa 10.

Jenny and Graham were most helpful, friendly, and accommodating! We loved staying at Villa 10 for a second time coming from the U.S. Arriving there with food to welcome us made an easy arrival after 24 hours of traveling. Everything was beautifully ready for us. The location is amazing with views to take your breath away! The veranda was our favorite spot to hang out, have a glass of wine, and eat!! The flowers and lush greenery made such a tropical feel. We would highly recommend Villa 10 to anyone visiting Nelson!!see more

Heaven on Earth

We had a glorious stay here! Spectacular location and views of the Tasman Bay amongst olive trees and vineyards. The house had all the high end amenities with a kitchen any gourmet cook would fall in love with. We bought local fish and wine and had spectacular dinners on the gorgeous deck with lovely fires under the stars later in the evening. The spa was a welcome treat after long hikes in Abel Tasman, Queen Charlotte Trail and up Mt Arthur. So many wonderful things to do close by. Had thought we would do more distant traveling but there was no need to go too far. The bikes and kayaks were wonderful too. Beds were extremely comfortable. Highly recommend this exquisite home!see more

Lovely serene picturesque stay

The cottage was charming, beautifully decorated and in a gorgeous position. We watched the sun rise over the estuary, flax and sea birds, a perfect New Zealand view. I particularly loved the colours and the furnishings of the cottage and the closeness to the sea was perfect. Service was great, everything provided.see more

Idyllic cottage in beautiful location

We have just left Karaka cottage after staying for 3 nights and it wasn't long enough! We have been travelling round NZ for 4 weeks and have seen some amazing sights but this beautiful cottage on an unspoilt peaceful river estuary will be one of the highlights of our trip. The cottage itself is very well designed with colourful quirky decor. It is very well equipped and extremely comfortable (great double bed!). We made lots of use of the outdoor bath tub- beautiful in the morning with the sun streaming through the trees, amazing on a clear night looking at the stars. There are places to sit outside and catch the sunshine whatever time of day, and a choice of tables for a bite to eat. It is a 5 minute drive from Mapua which we loved with its lively wharf, great places for coffee, nice beer (brewery on sight) lunch or supper (especially liked the Jellyfish Cafe) and bought a couple of hats from the hat shop! We spent a day in abel Tasman park, an easy drive to access water taxis and get dropped off and picked up again after walking part of the track. We also had a great day kayaking in the morning right outside our cottage and hiring bikes in the afternoon and hopping on the ferry from Mapua to cycle on Rabbit Island. Elspeth and Kim leave you alone, but are really helpful if you need any advice. Wish we didn't live at the other side of the world- hope we can come back soon!see more

Didn't Want to Leave

The other half and I chose the Loft primarily for the view which is as stunning as the pictures suggest and also because it looked nice. Nice actually didn't describe the place, beautiful is far closer to the mark. Jenny and Graham have put so much talent and artistry into the design and development it is a real credit to them. Add to that Jenny's welcoming touches of fruit, herbal bouquets from the garden and home made lemonade and we wanted to put down roots. If we ever get back to New Zealand this place is definitely on the itinerary.see more
