“Idyllic cottage in beautiful location”
We have just left Karaka cottage after staying for 3 nights and it wasn't long enough! We have been travelling round NZ for 4 weeks and have seen some amazing sights but this beautiful cottage on an unspoilt peaceful river estuary will be one of the highlights of our trip. The cottage itself is very well designed with colourful quirky decor. It is very well equipped and extremely comfortable (great double bed!). We made lots of use of the outdoor bath tub- beautiful in the morning with the sun streaming through the trees, amazing on a clear night looking at the stars. There are places to sit outside and catch the sunshine whatever time of day, and a choice of tables for a bite to eat. It is a 5 minute drive from Mapua which we loved with its lively wharf, great places for coffee, nice beer (brewery on sight) lunch or supper (especially liked the Jellyfish Cafe) and bought a couple of hats from the hat shop! We spent a day in abel Tasman park, an easy drive to access water taxis and get dropped off and picked up again after walking part of the track. We also had a great day kayaking in the morning right outside our cottage and hiring bikes in the afternoon and hopping on the ferry from Mapua to cycle on Rabbit Island. Elspeth and Kim leave you alone, but are really helpful if you need any advice. Wish we didn't live at the other side of the world- hope we can come back soon!
“Paradise for an extended family”
I emailed the requirements of our family and Elspeth suggested we take all three properties. It was perfect for us, everyone had space and privacy and yet room to come together. The cottages are well appointed and have a lovely retro feel. The bathrooms were clean with perfect pressure in the shower and fresh and the beds comfy (the outdoor bath was a big hit with the kids). The kitchens had loads of pots and cooking equipment if you needed. There was tea and coffee supplied with a number of condiments and such. Elspeth even gave us some gorgeous farm fresh eggs to supplement supplies. Information about the surrounding area was plentiful. Our children played safely outside for hours on end leaving the adults to the important business of catching up. Elspeth was helpful, informative and really lovely.
“Fantastic relaxing stay”
Our family of 4 (2 young kids) had a fantastic stay at Karaka Cottage. It was a welcome relief from a week of campervaning. Elspeth was extremely accomodating with any request without being obtrusive. The cottage is in a wonderful quiet location and the hammock and outdoor bath were absolute winners for adults and kids alike! The cottage is not far from Mapua with all of the cafes and restaurants that it has to offer. Highly recommended.
“Beautiful cottage, magic location”
We had a fabulous stay at Karaka Cottage. The cottage is lovely - it has everything you could need and is beautifully furnished - a very stylish 'kiwi bach'. The location on the estuary at Mapua is stunning too - totally tranquil, but still close enough to everything (a couple of minutes to the wharf at Mapua, which has some good places to eat) and about a 20 minute drive back to Nelson. It's also on the way to abel Tasman of course - but we were just in the mood to relax, so were quite happy just to enjoy the cottage surrounds. The outside bath was amazing, with just the sound of the many estuary birds for company in the evening. Just perfect! And in the morning, the sun streamed in from across the water - which was gorgeous on a late winter morning. (the cottage is very warm in the winter too - has a great wood burner). Thanks so much - we'll definitely be back!
“Stunning Relaxing Retreat”
Amazing spot, views and Bach in such a easy to access location. Highly recommend for those travelling or local Nelsonian's wanting a relaxing break. Love the outside bath on a winters night!
“When I woke up in the morning and saw daybreak, I thought I had”
From the moment my husband and I walked in to the beautifully furbished accommodation to the moment we left, we felt like we were in a very special part of the world. Elspeth is a very accommodating, but not imposing host.We arrived to a lit fire and just sat and took it in. Initially we intended to trek out each day to the pleasure ground that the Nelson region has to offer, but for the first couple of days we couldn't leave the place - too yummy for words. The tap water is lovely and if you like a nice chardonnay - try the Greenhough - some of their grapes are grown on the property. And you must take a soak in the outdoor bath! We will be back.
“Truly fantastic place to stay”
Awesome accomodation. Super warm fire, great views from all round. Relaxing with chips and a beer in the hammock - perfect. Great for kids, our little one had great fun feeding the chickens in the mornings and exploring the waters edge. Fresh eggs from Elsbeth for breakfast. Already want to plan our return trip. Fantastic!!!
“Back to Matahua”
Coming back to Karaka we were a bit apprehensive that it couldn't live up to our memories of our first visit last year. In fact it was even better. The surroundings are even more stunning, with the vineyard and olive grove more mature now and the plantings of New Zealand native bushes and trees on the water's edge flourishing. Once again Elspeth was a wonderful host and the combination of Nelson food, wine and the wood fire made for a great respite from city stress. I wish we could live there.
“Fantastic and so relaxing!”
We had a lovely two night stay in the Karaka Cottage. The outdoor bathtub was a real highlight, along with the stunning views. The cottage is private and beautifully fitted out all in retro style! We loved it and hope to be back soon.. It was a great getaway and only 20min from our home in Nelson..but it feels like worlds away! Thank you!
“We'd like to go back!”
We stayed in both cottages during a week of rain and Nelson's 100 year floods! They were a perfect escape and shelter from the storm. Fireplace & firewood provided came in handy. Fresh eggs for breakfast, delicious! Elspeth was so lovely and easy to deal with. Had some blue sky sunny days near the end of our stay. This private little peninsula is gorgeous, regardless of the weather. So quiet and peaceful, it would make a fantastic retreat for writing or a mid-winter getaway. Great location near Mapua and lots of vineyards. We've already been recommending it to friends.
