“What makes a good holiday.” Trying to determine where to stay when planning a holiday is extremely hard when you have never been to a spot. Mary & Peter's was like finding a winning loto ticket in your pants pocket. It is a new place and they have all the added touches such as big screen TV, Movies, Stereo, BBQ and the best of all the most magnificent view you could ever want. We actually felt that we did not have to leave the unit as you could never get a better view and the sun was shining the entire time. They have added a great deal of personal touches to the place that make it a pleasure to stay at. Your hospitality was outstanding and there is nothing negative we could ever add to this experience. Gentlemen this is the place to take your partner for a nice glass of wine and sit on the balcony and watch the view.

“A Fabulous Place” On arrival we received the warmest of greetings from our fabulous host Jenny and Graham, who then left us in luxurious peace, only to reappear again to offer full and warm assistance on departure. The accommodation was faultless. Jenny's thoughtful touches though out the apartment immediately put us into holiday mood, and we wanted for nothing. Our only concern was the steepness of the access to the apartment, and no off street parking.

“Perfect villa” I stayed 7 nights. The views are magnificent, the villa is spotless and modern and nothing was too much trouble for Nicola when I needed something. The villa is 5 minutes by car away from the town in the hills and it is the best location to be in nelson. It is a good base to go across the coast and perfect for relaxing and watching the world go by.

Nelson cottage

2 bedrooms / 1 bathroom / sleeps 5

“Eco friendly, warm and helpful hosts, outstanding location and v” We, a family of two parents and two college aged kids, stayed in the cottage in mid September, 2012. We arrived after having been rained on at the glaciers. ..and had wet clothes. Gina and Martin offered to let us use their dryer . ..(there is a washer in the cottage), and ended up drying and folding our clothes! This was above and beyond. The house was designed for maximum ecologically benefit. The heater is wood fired. . .but we were perfectly warm, although stormy outside. We appreciated the Vanners leaving tons of information and brochures about everything, from hiking, to eating. Also, they looked up things for us and gave recommendations that helped tremendously. The cottage is truly private ..but we were always treated well when we went to the "neighbors" to get info or to talk. We would have loved to stay longer. Martin-the crossing was not as bad as predicted. .but thanks so much for the heads-up on the storm warnings! Would definitely stay again.

“What magnificient days - What a breathtakig view - What a superb” We have truly enjoyed our four-day trip to Kina Beach. We were staying right in the main building of the sprawling luxury estate. The morning swim in the beautifully designed 25 m pool - overlooking the gorgeous Kina Beach gave our days a very special beginning. The breakfasts on the spacious terrace with view on the magnificent vineyards and the incomparable sight on the sea, made it difficult for us to break up in order not to linger longer. The excursions in the area are varied and wide-ranging; it would be an unforgivable sin, to be there and have not explored, the outstanding abel Tasman National Park with all its natural treasures and its superb impressiveness. A hang glider flight over Kina Beach was simply breath-taking and unforgettable. The trip to the most northern point of the South Island to Farewell Split with silent walks on the lengthy stretched beach plus resting on the sand dunes was healing balm for our souls. The crowning end of our perfect days was the jointly prepared dinner in the luxury kitchen of the property and of course the comfortably relaxing bath in the well-tempered indoor whirlpool. A holiday location where "nothing is must but anything is possible". From golfing on the idyllic 9-hole course - only a two minutes' drive or kayaking in the beautiful Kina Bay, shopping at the nearby Nelson to unforgettable excursions to abel Tasman- everything was just fantastic, but the next time we will stay longer to admire the wonderful nature, and the unique ambience of the estate more extensive. Mapua Heights Cottage - "A gem among gems", Nelson

Mapua cottage

2 bedrooms / 1 bathroom / sleeps 4

“Waking and looking down through the sun-tipped flax” We were lucky to find the Mapua cottage, perched on top of the Mahana ridge, successfully hidden by maturing native bush. Kenneth and Vivy welcomed us, though we arrived late, with a fire in the pot belly, bread and coffee set for breakfast. We were woken by Ken calling a young doe up to the fence to get her breakfast, and the glorious Nelson sunshine forced us out of bed. I thoroughly recommend the Mapua Cottage as a haven for travellers and only wish we could have prolonged our stay.

Miro Cottage at The Apple Pickers' Cottages, Mapua-Nelson

Bronte cottage

“wonderful” we spent 9 days there and we loved every day - even the 2 it was pouring. (so we could light the fireplace!) it is a very cozy little cottage, totally private, very clean, perfectly equipped (esp. the kitchen), great beds to sleep well, we loved the retro interior and the views from all windows - even the toilet one ;) we stayed there with a 1 year old and she liked it just like us. the location is excellent because it's right by the water, which is coming and going twice a day ;-), very close to nice little mapua, also close to motueka (e.g. big supermarkets) and also abel tasman ntl. park, beaches etc. nelson is also not too far. the owner was very helpful and friendly and we'd definitely come more often ... if we didn't live on the other side of the globe.

Karaka Cottage at The Apple Pickers' Cottages, Mapua-Nelson

Bronte cottage

2 bedrooms / 1 bathroom / sleeps 4

“Beautiful cottage, magic location” We had a fabulous stay at Karaka Cottage. The cottage is lovely - it has everything you could need and is beautifully furnished - a very stylish 'kiwi bach'. The location on the estuary at Mapua is stunning too - totally tranquil, but still close enough to everything (a couple of minutes to the wharf at Mapua, which has some good places to eat) and about a 20 minute drive back to Nelson. It's also on the way to abel Tasman of course - but we were just in the mood to relax, so were quite happy just to enjoy the cottage surrounds. The outside bath was amazing, with just the sound of the many estuary birds for company in the evening. Just perfect! And in the morning, the sun streamed in from across the water - which was gorgeous on a late winter morning. (the cottage is very warm in the winter too - has a great wood burner). Thanks so much - we'll definitely be back!

About Nelson

Situated on New Zealand's South Island, Nelson resides right by the Tasman Bay's eastern shores. It is the cultural and economic hub of the region. Nelson, established in 1841, is the oldest settled city on South Island and the second-oldest in New Zealand. The landscape features several beautiful beaches, a sheltered harbor, and numerous mountains. This area is the gateway for a number of lush natural parks too including Abel Tasman National Park, Kahurangi National Park, and Nelson Lakes National Park. Nelson is a popular spot for ecotourism and adventure expeditions. Outdoor enthusiasts will encounter caving, hiking, and climbing while history buffs can relish the discovery of several historic sites and Victorian structures. There is also a burgeoning arts scene, plenty of dining options, and a wealth of entertainment and shopping opportunities.

Here are a few additional suggestions of things to do in Nelson:

  • The Nelson Provincial Museum: This museum is home to a collection of artifacts that are locally significant. There are over one million items in its holdings, which have been gathered during the past 160 years.
  • The World of Wearable Art and Classic Cars Museum: This structure contains displays of classic and rare collectible cars as well as works from the yearly Montana WOW Awards Show of wearable art.
  • The Natureland Zoological Park: This facility is located close to Tahunanui Beach. It is a popular spot for families and children who want to interact with wallabies, monkeys, meerkats, and llamas. There are also numerous turtles, tropical fish, and birds.
  • Trafalgar Park: Situated in the center of the city, this large area hosts a number of sporting events, including rugby, cricket, and soccer games.
  • The Christ Church Cathedral: Located on upper Trafalgar Street in the heart of the city, this Anglican church features a beautiful facade, well-decorated interiors, and an impressive organ that includes more than 2000 pipes.
  • The Amber House: This two-story villa is one of the older homes of Nelson. It is a traditional colonial-style building that was constructed using local elements of Rimu and Matai. The exterior showcases intricately designed cast iron pipes too, making it an intriguing piece of architecture to see.

A vacation rental in Nelson is a great way to experience all that the city has to offer. Book a wood-side cabin or villa in some spectacular surroundings for your next getaway. Or, rent a condo closer to the city center close to great restaurants and a buzzing nightlife.

A great place to stay!

We stayed at the West Wing for a week during January 2014. We found this to be an idea spot in which to explore local attractions plus day trips to Marlborough and abel Tasman park. The accommodation was spacious and furnished to a high standard. We loved the period features and feel of the place. It was also very private and we spent a couple of enjoyable days just chilling out at the West Wing. Plenty of space and some nice touches with homemade lemonade and fresh fruit and herbs awaiting on arrival.Jenny and Graham were very friendly and helpful.see more

Perfect Relaxation!

Beautiful accomodation! The abel Tasman Villa was my home away from home for a few months, and I enjoyed every moment. The Villa is beautifully laid out with spacious airy rooms, comfortable furniture, plenty of storage and is very well equipped. There are 2 bedrooms and guests have their own private bathroom. The views are absolutely stunning, and many hours can be spent simply relaxing on the deck watching the activity in the harbour. The location is perfect for enjoying all that the Nelson area has to offer, and there are some very good restaurants within walking distance. However, with such incredible views, the evenings are just perfect dining at home and watching the sun set! Our host made sure we were very comfortable upon arrival, and was only a phone call away if we needed anything. It was the perfect place to spend time in Nelson.see more
Arrow Rock Waterfront - Nelson
arrow rock winter one night stand

My partner and I were looking for a one night stay in Nelson. Many "decent" looking places have 2 night minimums, but mary at arrow Rock was happy to offer us one noght. What a treat, really. Very spacious one bedroom suite, self contained, beautiful and comfy lounge suite, good home theatre system and movie selection - perfect for a cold winters night- and a most comfortable bed...all with a view to die for. Walking distance is 8 minutes to Tahnunanui beach - where you can walk or jog for miles. (If you do walk down the Tahnunanui...take care crossing the main access way wakefield quay , on foot - ditto with a bicycle. Traffic is nasty and I live (in hope) for the day when it isn't a commercial through route for the big trucks!) Boatshed restaurant is 400 metres to the north, several cafes and other eating places 8-10 minutes walk to the south. Comparisons? ...we have stayed in the nearby Wheelhouse Inn several times in the past - but we found it both pricey and, for our tastes, the beds were uncomfortably hard. Mary was exceptionally helpful in organising our stay, parking, ...nice to have the owner nearby too.see more
