“Peace and alpacas” We booked this property in early October without a thought for the weather, however two weeks before our arrival, the snow fell heavily in the UK. I kept in contact with the owner who assured us they would get us into the fairly remote property at least as they owned a 4x4. The plan was to arrange a Tesco home delivery on the day that we arrived, but the on-line service had stopped taking any more bookings due to the snow. So a quick shopping expedition on our way to North Yorkshire and we were excited. The place is about 1/2 mile off the main road and we found it no problem even in the dark. We were met by Kaye, the owner who soon put us at ease and after a quick run down of the cottage, explained where the local hostelry was. I had been nominated chef for the week, so a quick search round "my kitchen" put me in a great party mood. It was perfect, everything to hand, clean and well equipped. It is a farm cottage on a working smallholding with dogs, chickens, sheep and the alpacas over the fence. The property has a large comfy double bedroom and in the lounge the comfiest sofa bed I have ever slept on. It has constant hot water, a great shower and a stable door to look out into the foldyard. We spent lazy days at home, with the small TV, and plenty of books in the property it was a relaxing break. We are not walkers or ramblers but spent our time equally between "the Bay" and Whitby exploring the lovely shops, pubs and harbour. You cannot go to Whitby without buying smoked Kippers from Fortunes. you cannot visit the Bay without a couple of pints in the pub looking out to sea. We only needed assistance once in our front wheel drive car but the locals were as helpful as any you would wish to meet. Would we go again, you bet your auntie Nelly we would. Lovely cottage, Lovely people, Lovely area!

“Wonderful cottage in a great location” The cottage is really well presented and the en suite in the 2nd bedroom was a bonus for our teenage daughter! Everything we wanted to see and do was within an hours drive so the location really worked for us. Would definately recommend this cottage to others. The living, dining, kitchen is compact but has everything you need. I imagine it would be very cosy in winter with the log burner going!

“Character by the bucketload!” A lovely small 'quirky' cottage, with everything you could want. Welcoming but unobtrusive hosts; good location for visiting all the attractions in North/East Yorkshire. Local pub serves good food with a warm welcome. The visiting/moblile fish and chip van in the village is worth a visit.

“A pleasant and comfortable stay.” The cottage is spacious and well appointed. It is in a peaceful location adjoining a farm. The village is a few miles from a town so a car is essential. A good venue for walking and for touring by car.

“Good break” Two friends and ourselves had a very pleasant stay in June, weather reasonably good considering this summer. Cottage was very clean with all the extras you could wish for. Owners very nice but did not see them after taking over the property as they were off on holiday the following day. Cottage handy for attractions and a nice place to return to at the end of the day.

“Brilliant accomodation But Parking an Issue” Having stayed in the adjoining Station House we decided to try the adjoining Ticket Office as it was cheaper but still offered the same unbeatable location with easy access to Whitby and the North Yorks Moors as well as the "main line" and preserved Nymr. The Ticket Office was excellent as dexpected, the spiral staircase not bothering her who must be obeyed even though she does not have a head for heights. Whilst the bed was accessible from one side only, this was not a problem and the overall ambience of the accomodation was excellent. Whilst there is a designated parking space for one car (and supposedly 3 for the Station House with 1 marked space) the people staying in the Staion House had 3 cars and on 4 occasions in a week we were either blocked in or could not access our space,I do not like the hassle of having to knock on doors at 0845 to wake somebody up in order to move their car(s) and ultimately we arranged to block their cars in as we inevitably left first in the morning. If you can manage to travel by public transport (Staion platform literally on the door step but a poor service however there is a reasonable bus service) then this would be ideal. There is very little spare parking in Ruswarp. Overall we would return to the the location again but would be prepared to pay the extra to stay in the Station House and do away with the parking issues.

“Be the railway children for a week” My wife and I took our 2 grown up children and their children to the holiday cottage for a week. The 2 four year old children thought it was marvelous that they could stand on the platform, watch steam trains go by and wave to the driver and passengers. There is a picturesque walk into Whitby with the railway line on your left and the River Esk on your right which takes about 20 minutes. The house is large and well furnished and we had a wonderful time there.

Lastingham house

“The perfect 'get away from it all' cottage” From the moment we were welcomed by the owner to the moment we left this was the perfect get away from it all break. The cottage was very cosy for a winter break, we could also see it as ideal for those warmer evenings, sitting outside by the beck. Although Lastingham is in a lovely quiet valley the towns of Whitby, Scarborough and Malton are all within easy reach. Walking on the Moors is accessible from the door-step,wonderful countryside to explore in all seasons as long as you are fully prepared; walking boots, etc. are essential. We hope to return in the very near future.

Whitby house

“Excellent three generation, family, holiday venue” Service excellent. House spacious, well equipped, lots of unexpected extras, everything needed to cater for a house full of all ages. Location perfect for us with play area opposite and parking for two cars. We like South side of Whitby, only 5 mins quick walk away, flat route better for pushchair. Downstairs separate area ideal for young couple, ensuite perfect for us who paid the bill. Everyone, from the 2 year old to the 67 year old loved the decor, tasteful, yet out of harms way, carefully positioned for safety yet with maximum impact. The spacious living room, kitchen and corridors enabled the youngsters to let off steam despite the typical Whitby weather

“Very relaxing” The property makes for an excellent base for travelling to the coast or the North Yorkshire Moors. The property owners are extremely friendly and helpful. The property is spotlessly clean. The pub is just two minutes walk across the road; the food and service are second to none and the staff are very accommodating and everyone is dog friendly. This was our second visit to this property and we will probably visit again.

“A lovely cottage, a great location, a lovely time.” Parking in Whitby is an absolute premium, so an allocated space is brilliant. It's only a short walk into the town, and the co op is about 5 mins walk away. The location is incredible, and the views across the Esk are wonderful, and best of all it was a steam gala weekend, so we had steam trains past the window four times a day in each direction, with the runaround directly outside the window. Marvellous.By the end of the week we recognised the locos by the sound of their whistle! the cottage is 'upside down', meaning the best views are all from the living room/dining room area. The bedrooms are extremely quiet, with no street noise. the cottage was exceptionally well equipped with a comfortable bed. Everything was exceptionally clean, and well cared for. We would definitely come again, but it has to be a stay for people who like trains (unsurprisingly with the name!!). best to check the Nymr website before booking as steam trains don't always run.No faults, no problems whatsoever.

Longstone Cottage, Ugthorpe

Ugthorpe house

  • 2 bedrooms
  • 1 bathroom
  • sleeps 6

“Warm and very comfortable cottage, and extremely helpful owners.” The location is great - lots of open fields around, good walks, peaceful, lovely pub in Ugthorpe. Wonderful beaches at Sandsend and Whitby. The cottage was lovely and warm, we didnt need to use the log burner (which was disappointing as I really wanted to!) The owner popped round shortly after we arrived to make sure everything was ok, which it was. Our two border terriers thought they had died and gone to heaven, had a great time exploring everywhere. Our only problem was that the oven broke down, but am sure it's fixed by now, and I cooked our meal in the aga in the main house. On the list of what's not included in the property there should be added washing up liquid, washing powder and j cloths. Don't mind having to provide my own, but would be better if pre-warned. Although the owner did say that she had provided some items in the past but sometimes they hadnt been used, so wasn't sure whether these should be included. I said yes, but will remember to take some with me next time!

“wonderful cottage and garden” Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, even the washing up became a joy as there were so many birds in the garden.

Price per night from

“Lovely cosy hideaway” What a lovely, cosy cottage. From the minute we arrived to the minute we left we had the most relaxing time. The cottage is beautifully furnished, comfortable and cosy. The kitchen is really well appointed and the log burning stove adds a lovely, country feel. For us the best thing was that our puppy Bailey loved it! The courtyard is totally secure so he was able to have a run around without us worrying. On our arrival we were greeted by a lovely box of cakes, jar of coffee, fresh milk and a local paper which, after a long drive, were very very welcome. We enjoyed our stay so much that we are hoping to return later this year!
