Vista Abril - luxury beach villa by safari reserve
Pristine beach holiday and safari in one!

What I loved about Machangulo is that its one of the very few places in Africa where the bush meets the sea. Where else could you watch an elephant family bathing in a lake, flamingos overhead, go for a surf, catch a fish and scuba dive in aquamarine water all in the same day. And that’s leaving a few activities out! The house we stayed in, Vista Abril, was situated in the dune forest overlooking Abril Bay and Inhaca Island. The bay's headland provided a very safe swimming area for the kids as well as excellent right hand point break for surfing or kitesurfing. The point was good for game fishing and the sheltered beach with its rock pools was fun for the smaller stuff and snorkelling. We used the lodge close by for deep sea fishing and scuba excursions. The Machangulo peninsula is a conservancy, which runs a turtle protection program. We were not lucky enough to see them nesting, but we saw loads in the water. The inland lakes are saline and crystal clear, they are home to hippos, flamingos and a wide variety of bird life. There was also lots of opportunity to relax as the house is positioned for privacy, while offering panoramic views from the deck and living area. To cap it off there is an infinity pool to wallow in while taking in views of Inhaca Island. The owners have invested alot in finishings and there are quite a few creature comforts that you often don’t find in these sorts of places. We flew into King Shaka International Airport (Durban) on Emirates and hired a 4x4. Its an 8 hour drive, 4 hours of highway on the South African side and 4 hours of dirt road on the Mozambican side. We broke the journey up by staying at Umfolozi National Park, which is SA’s second largest big 5 safari area. On the Mozambican side the road takes you through the Maputo Elephant reserve, where you have a pretty good chance of seeing one of the big herds there. We were told about Tembe Elephant Reserve and a few other parks like the St. Lucia Wetland Conservancy, but just didn’t have the time to visit. The lodge owners told us that you can fly directly into the Machangulo Estate’s airstrip from Maputo or catch a boat from Maputo. All in all a great stay, highly recommended for outdoor enthusiasts and active families.see more
