About Mexico City

Oozing with Spanish Colonial charm and a cultural renaissance that is a million miles away from the war on drugs, Mexico City is a buzzing metropolis just waiting to be discovered. For a wide range of places to stay, visit FlipKey where you’ll find your perfect vacation rental.

About Mexico City

Mexico City is the second largest city in the western hemisphere, after New York, with a metropolitan area containing over 21 million people.

Once the capital of the Aztec Empire, Tenochtitlan—as it was known then—was razed to the ground by Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés in August 1521. The city was rebuilt with churches placed over Aztec temples and became the capital of New Spain.

Mexico became an independent nation in 1821 following a rebellion against Spanish rule. However, it still had to endure a ten-year civil war between 1910 and 1920.

Since then, the city has experienced tremendous growth—it hosted the 1968 Olympics and both the 1970 and 1986 World Cups. It's a popular destination and should definitely be on your vacation wish-list.

What to do in Mexico City

The first-time visitor to Mexico City will be amazed by the size and grandeur of the Plaza de la Constitución and its enormous Mexican flag which is ceremoniously raised and lowered each day.

During a visit to the city, be sure to visit the Museo Nacional de Antropología—it is the most visited museum in the country and on par with the world’s best.

Spend the afternoon with an ice cream as you explore Chapultepec Park before watching the sunset from the bar of what was once the city’s tallest building—the Torre Latino.

For traditional Mariachi bands and cantinas, visit Garibaldi Square where ornately dressed musicians belt out heartfelt ballads.

A day trip to the Moon & Sun Pyramids is a must, as is a visit to the Palacio de Bellas Artes to witness one of the best dance shows on earth—the Ballet Folklorico.

Top travel tips for Mexico City

Visit between the months of December and April when there is virtually no rain, but be sure to pack a sweater as the evenings can be chilly due to the high altitude.

Be sure to make use of the city’s extensive Metro. It's safe and and affordable, with a single fare costing just .30¢.

The Zona Rosa is where you want to hang out at night, with buzzing bars aplenty. On the way home to your rental, don’t forget to try some street food as it’s insanely delicious.

We recommend steering clear of tap water and only drinking bottled. If your Spanish is up to it, you could try asking for “agua de garrafon” (filtered water) while in restaurants.

Mexico City is a popular destination now and deservedly so, with its friendly people, absorbing history, vibrant arts scene—as well as a low peso that makes designer shopping an affordable treat. For all your accommodation needs, visit FlipKey where you will find the perfect rental property for your next vacation.

Historic Center/Reforma Balcony AC Airport Service
Fantastic view and location, Excellent Host

,The location, amenities, panoramic view and 2 bathrooms and laundry well worth the price for 2 or 3 people. The compact galley kitchen was clean, modern and well equipped; the stacked clothes washer/dryer a bonus. The bedrooms are very compact and would be a challenge for those who travel with large wardrobes. There are no bedside tables or bed reading lights. During our stay in early April, air conditioning was rarely needed, ceiling fans and standing fans were welcome accessories. Sitting on the balcony in the morning or after a long day was a luxury at any price, especially during and after a refreshing thunderstorm. The condo swimming pool was impressively large, public areas posh and immaculate. Doormen were unfailingly professional and welcoming. Bruce and his staff were available and knowledgeable. Two excellent coffee shops across the street, the best one just across Luis Moya street on Independencia. Excellent budget Mexican diner across the street with al pastor in front; Tlaquepaque taqueria just down Independencia street at Eje Central open till 3am.see more

Great location, bright and spacious apartment!

Stayed here this spring for a long weekend - fantastic location for sightseeing and shopping! Apartment is clean and stylish, with plenty of room for more people (we had only two people staying in a large space). The complex is very secure and safe, with security provided and lots of amenities. Overall I would definitely stay here again on my next trip to Mexico City!see more
Penthouse Angel Independence Balcony Airport Servi
This was a great apartment and Bruce provided fabulous attentive honest service.

My husband and I just spent three weeks in this apartment and it was clean, comfortable, quiet and the view from the balcony was exceptional. Bruce and his staff were first rate. They met us at the airport and brought us to the apartment reasonably late at night. Whenever we requested anything, it was immediately provided. On the day we left, Bruce came over and personally gave us back our deposit! In addition to the apartment being beautifully furnished, the location is the best. It is in the middle of the historical district and convenient to everything. Even though we are an older couple, we always felt safe. The doormen were extremely helpful and courteous. And the residents of the apartment were very friendly. Whenever we stepped outside of our door, we were always met by warm greetings. We travel often and have rented other such apartments. This one is truly tops and Bruce made the whole experience easy without any stress.see more
Historic Center Reforma Heart of the City
Loved it. Had a wonderful stay at Historic Center Reforma

We stayed at Historic Center Reforma Heart of the City, for 1 week. It is a great location, Two blocks from Bellas Artes. About 5-7 blocks from El Zocalo, Super close to a ton of museums. We had a fabulous vacation. The unit is large enough and they were quick to respond to any of our questions and needs. I've already referred a few of my friends.see more

Historic Center near Reforma Pool Airport Pick-up
Right in the historic center of Mexico City

Like my title says, we arrived to Mexico city at midnight our first time. Next day when we got out to the street with out knowing any thing about our situation it was a real great surpriseto find out that our apartment was in the historic district of Mexico City. Bellas Artesis one block away and Madero street two blocks away. From there the Zocalo and of course great restaurants and everything in between. The famous Paseo de la Reforma around the corner with all the traffic and noise as you expected. Transportation is not a big issue there are plenty of taxis at the stands of course, and the Hilton hotel its just next door from our building, where you can get a hotel taxi to be safer. From this point you have access to Garibaldi Square which is walking distance. And much more to describe here. We have seen complaints about the noise in these apartments, but after a long day exploring around this great city it is nice to go back to your completlye furnished and enjoyable place.see more
