“Perfect” Our family stayed here for a weekend in September and thoroughly enjoyed it! We live in Oxnard and needed a place for family visiting from out of town. The Dunes Hideaway was the perfect solution for us! The beach is close and the home is comfortable and clean! There are bikes for adults and toys for children. With three bedrooms and two bathrooms there is space for everyone! Jana has thought of everything you could possibly need and has it waiting for you. She is easy to work with and made the whole process simple, Our family will stay here again and again. The Dunes is set up with everything you need, Just bring yourself and desire for fun or relaxation, it's all close by. A book with menus from nearby restaurants and suggestions for local activities has been compiled by the owner and is a great resource if you choose to go out. The open concept kitchen makes staying at home tempting. A nice deck for BBQ-ing is a great bonus! You will love how easy it is to stay at the Dunes Hideaway!

“Cozy, comfortable beach Thanksgiving!” We had not done a vacation rental before but wanted a comfortable place at Ventura near the beach where our college-age daughter and friends could join us for Thanksgiving. This cottage was wonderful -- provided everything we needed for the week, including fully equipped kitchen in which we cooked Thanksgiving dinner. The cottage is cozy and compact but very attractive and well fitted out. The bedroom/family room downstairs was perfect for our visiting college girls, with their own bath and TV. The balcony off the living area provides a charming view of the beach 6 doors down the lane and sunsets -- great place for morning coffee. There's a good grocery store, a number of shops, and restaurants in easy walking distance. We found Ventura to be an ideal mix of beach, mountains and farmland, with plenty of "big city" amenities but a friendly, small town feel. We wanted easy access from la and lax, and a launching place for exploring the Central Coast and Ventura was perfect. Pierpont Beach is marvelous, wide and clean. Great town! Our landlady Jane was easy to work with on setting up the arrangements and met us at the cottage upon arrival. She provided great orientation for the cottage and nearby things to do. We loved it and hope we can return!

Ojai sits in the Ojai Valley, not too far from the busy streets of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

But, they might as well be a world away as they’re so different from this peaceful spot.

A mixture of spas, specialist boutiques and relaxing retreats, Ojai is the perfect place to come for a New Age adventure.

People have been visiting here for centuries. The Chumash Native Americans called it their home, and that's where the name comes from – Ojai means 'nest' in the native language.

However, residents have now given it the nickname of 'Shangri-La' because of its natural beauty and focus on spirituality.

It's not just for them, though. The area is also popular with classic car and motorcycle clubs. So, don't be surprised if you see a few whizzing round.

It's a great place to visit all year round, if you can stand the heat – in summer it can reach over 100 F! But, the winters are mild, so we'd say visit then if you’re not much of a sun worshipper!

What to do

The best way to discover everything Ojai has to offer is just to walk through the town.

You can visit the small local businesses and sample their produce. Most specialize in eco-friendly items, including art, design and home improvement-related items (solar power is a big deal here).

You won't see any chain stores in Ojai – it's all independent and that’s just fantastic! Make sure to visit the Farmer's Market on Sundays to sample some of the fresh food available.

During the summer, go to one of the outdoor concerts at the famous Libbey Bowl. You'll be kept shaded by the oak trees and are sure to have a good time.

If you're up for an outdoor adventure, head to Los Padres National Forest. See waterfalls, take a dip in hot springs, have a picnic and hike through the hills. You'll probably want more than one day there, so consider camping at one of the sites.

If you want a tour of the area, sign up for a jeep tour or horseback riding adventure. They're both great ways to see the valley.

Top Ojai travel tips

During your stay, try to catch the Ojai Music Festival. It's usually the first weekend after Memorial Day. If you can't make that, see if you can go to May's Art in the Park events.

Even if you're focused on the spiritual aspect of Ojai, you should spend at least one day in the park and enjoy the spectacular views.

There are plenty of restaurants in Ojai for you to try. Some are a bit more unusual than others, so check the menu before you go in.
