Our two-bedroom Kupu Kupu Villa(Butterfly Villa in Bahasa) is located in the prosperous little village of Nyuhtebel on the outskirts of the coastal village of Candidasa on Bali’s mid-east coast. Approximately one and a half hour’s drive from the island’s domestic and international airport, this part of Bali still rates as relatively undiscovered compared to the hustle and bustle of ‘the south’.
Kupu Kupu Villa provides access to real Balinese village life while still being within easy walking distance of numerous top-class restaurants, cafes and local warungs, the beach, shops and ATMs. All you need for a fun-filled, relaxing holiday.
The Regency of Karangasem, with its beautiful capital of Amlapura only 15 kms away to the north, offers some of the best snorkelling and scuba diving in Bali, trekking in the rice-fields, swimming in the cool waters of the ‘water palaces’, fishing, surfing and numerous other activities...or you can just chill out around the villa’s pool or have a relaxing massage on our private massage table. Komang, our talented masseuse, lives literally only a stone's throw away in the village.
Sitting on the side of a hill above the neat and colourful village of Nyuhtebel, Kupu Kupu Villa is accessible by either a series of steps or by a new pathway so may not be suitable for the physically challenged or young children.
BUT, you only need to be moderately fit to enjoy what this delightful property has to offer...beautiful views over the verdant green rice, corn and vegetable fields and coconut plantations, the sparkling ocean across to the islands of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, colourful sunsets and the sacred and revered volcano, Mount Agung.
And that’s not to mention the village of Nyuhtebel itself. You will also experience the whole range of Balinese village life and all that entails...visually and musically colourful religious ceremonies, the laughter and enjoyment of children (and adults!!) playing or heading off to school or work, their beautiful smiles and welcoming ‘pagi’ (good morning) as you walk through the village to the warungs or German Bakery for a Bali coffee and cake, the squealing of the pigs and the crowing of the colourful roosters. Look out for the local monyets (monkeys) as they raid bananas from the warung or offerings from the temple just below the villa.
This is the real Bali travellers have been coming to the ‘Island of the Gods’ for decades to experience.
Transport from/to the airport (or elsewhere in Bali) can be arranged by Nyoman, our friendly and efficient manager, as can tours to the numerous provincial attractions. What Nyo doesn't know about about the region and Bali generally isn't worth knowing.
He and his beautiful wife, Wayan, come in each morning to serve you your complementary breakfast and service the villa. Nengah is responsible for the pool and villa maintenance and staff are on-call at all times while not being at all intrusive on your privacy and relaxation.
Nyo and Wayan will also cook up a traditional Balinese feast for you during your stay at a very reasonable charge. Nothing's too difficult for them to arrange.
Our pool is a little deep so is not really suitable for toddlers. The villa is better suited to families with older, water-aware children or a couple or two. While the villa consists of two, self-contained units (upstairs and down) including self-catering kitchens, if you are just a couple wishing to rent, the property will be yours exclusively. Rates are determined by the number of guests with the basic price being for two people only. Additional guests pay on a per person basis.
Guests are advised that, in order to comply with local Tourism industry regulations, they are required to provide a copy of the details page of their passport along with Rp50000 (approx $US5) per adult at the time of checking in.TripAdvisor property ID 2904201...Read more

We stayed at Kupu Kupu Villa for a full week in early July 2014. At the end of our visit we found it hard to tear ourself away to resume our normal lives. Situated just a ten minute walk from the township of Candidasa the villa is embedded in a largely undeveloped village where life has changed very little over many decades. The personal staff are sourced from this village (Nyuhtebel) and provide every conceivable service - cooking, cleaning, laundry, maintenance, massage, advice and local knowledge - all in a friendly and interactive way and delivered with a good working knowledge of English.
The villa is modern, clean and spotlessly maintained. A minor criticism is the lack of water pressure, which means showering is a 10 to 15 minute activity if you insist on a hot shower, not something that is essential in this climate. Self contained kitchens, comfortable beds, cool breezes, private swimming pool and fabulous views of mountains, bay and paddy fields complete a 5 star experience.
Candidasa itself is progressive, catering for locals and tourists alike with a number of cafes, restaurants and hotels providing varied dining and entertainment options. Live music features prominently in a number of bars and restaurants and is of very high quality. It is also easy to arrange a number of water and land based tours and activities all priced very competitively in the local currency.
This holiday destination is best suited for active couples or groups of friends with no or older children. A steep driveway and a final approach of 20 - 30 steps make it less convenient for less mobile people, but the outlook is well worth the effort.
“A Balinese village getaway, spotlessly clean and well appointed, and a short walk to shops and resta”

We stayed at Kupa Kupa Villa for one week in March 2014 and really enjoyed it. It was our first trip to Bali, and we opted for the airport pick up. It was punctual, friendly and good value, and far easier than trying to find our own way.
As indicated on the Tripadvisor listing, the paths accessing the villa may not be suitable for the physically challenged, but our 60-something legs didn’t find them a problem. Actually the walks to and from the villa provided an interesting experience of Balinese village life.
We stayed in the upper level villa. It was well appointed and spotlessly cleaned daily by the caretakers who also made a good breakfast. All the furniture including the double bed was in top condition. The terrace was a great place to relax and it offered nice rural views. The villa’s pool is small but deep and more than adequate for relief from the heat after a trip out to the many surrounding sights, or a walk up from Candidasa.
The warungs, restaurants and shops along the main road and beachfront in Candidasa offer plenty of choice and a range of standards and costs. If we didn’t feel like walking too far, the German/Indonesian café at the bottom of the access stairs provided good meals and snacks.
Overall, a great place to stay and relax away from the frenetic life of places like Kuta and Ubud. Good value too. Recommended.

We have now stayed at Kupu Kupu twice, heading for our third stay in September. What more could you ask for than to be pampered daily. Breakfast on the balcony followed by a 1hour's massage. A slow stroll into Candi Dasa for a coffee overlooking the ocean, fanned by gentle breezes. The toughest decision is choosing from a wonderful variety of restaurants for dinner. Hire a driver & car for the day ($40 approx) & he will take you anywhere within a 2hr drive. The holiday - Tension free & totally rejuvenating.
Many thanks for the great review, Len. You'll be pleased to know that the village administration has recently built a new concrete road that takes out the need to climb most of the steps. It's much easier now to get up to the villa, even with your dodgy knee. Regards, Peter & Lesley

I stayed at Kupu Kupu Villa with my wife and WOW! what an amazing experience!
The villa is impeccable, the facilities and location will not disappoint. Amazing views from the huge balconies, 5 minute walk to the beach, 5-10 minute walk to shops and restaurants, great diving/fishing/surfing spots close by and the private masseuse how could you go wrong. Oh and the pool, what an amazing setting with Mt Agung as the backdrop, many afternoons were spent relaxing by the pool.
Candi Dasa is a picturesque village away from the chaos of Kuta and Denpasa and provides glimpse of authentic Balinese life.
