Description from owner

Description

The penthouse is an open plan 2 bedroom apartment surrounded by a 7’ 6” wide veranda, on three sides, giving spectacular views of the Atlantic East & West. The all round veranda means there is plenty room to walk round, sit & sunbath. The penthouse is so close to the sea, it affords the luxury of being able to see & hear the water lap on the shore. One can sit and watch the sunrise or watch all types of boats, from fishing boats to pleasure boats or cruise liners sail or cruise past.

The penthouse is within walking distance and easy access to some of the nicest Lavada walks in Madeira and a short distance from two golf courses. It is an ideal location for those who want a resort holiday away from the busy city of Funchal. Surrounded by hotels with indoor and outdoor swimming pools and full leisure centres and next to the limpid waters of the Atlantic.

Further details

Property rental per week 2-persons occupancy.

Occupancy all Season £385 per week for the apartment. An additional £10 per person per day is charged for third/fourth persons. Children under 12 are free

We are flexible on Changeover day.

Further details indoors

The accommodation of 151.5 m 2 comprises a bedroom with king bed, two large windows & a door opening onto the west facing conservatory. So it has plenty of light and a beautiful view west to the sea
There is a very large bathroom.
A fully fitted kitchen, living / dining room with floor to ceiling picture window which affords magnificent views of both the sea straight ahead and the mountains to the left with access to the veranda via the large patio door from the lounge area. The kitchen is equipped with everything one should need.
Bedroom 2 is now used as a Lounge/TV room with a double bed settee. It also has direct access onto the veranda, via the conservatory outside. The double sofa-bed comfortably sleeps two additional guests. While technically the apartment sleeps 4, we prefer to let to 3 people so that our guests enjoy the space a two-bedroom apartment affords.
The penthouse is serviced by two lifts.
There is a weekly maid service. Linen and towels are also provided, but beach towels should be taken for sunbathing.
The penthouse is in a residential complex.

Further details outdoors

The totally private veranda is one of the main features of the apartment. Because it surrounds the apartment on three sides, one can follow the sun throughout the day. Some part of the veranda is always in shade and some in sun, thus sun lovers and shade lovers are both accommodated.
There are sun loungers, table and chairs on the veranda and with its stunning views it is an ideal spot for a lazy day reading and sunbathing, in total privacy.
Immediately outside the apartment block there are restaurants and bars and a small Spar mini market. On the road behind the apartment, there is a bakery, two further supermarkets, and a couple of other cafes. While there is plenty of entertainment and plenty places to eat, Caniço de Baixo is also a quiet location without loud music and noise

“Attention”

Response from the owner Mr Goncalves provides a very selective view of events. The detail on the Holiday Lettings web site, home 32231, under “How to get there” clearly states - 'If you use Car Hire, then key transfer is via our taxi driver outside the apartment. Fidelio needs to be paid a one off fee of €20 for the service.’ The stay was in August. Emails I sent to Mr Goncalves in June 2023 also outlined the need to pay for the key transfer: Le dim. 18 juin 2023 à 16:36, a écrit “Please let me know if you will need my taxi driver @€25 each way or will be hiring a car, in which case my taxi driver will meet you at the apartment and give you the keys. There isa one off charge of €20 for that service and you can leave the keys in the apartment when you leave.” 27/06/2023 14.16 email indicated “Attached is the information about the apartment [The Final Payment], some additional information [Additional Information] and detail how to get to the apartment [By car to the apartment]. The Final Pay document said:.” I do not live in Madeira and I keep the transfer of keys very tightly monitored, for security reasons. My taxi driver Fidelio does the key transfer, regardless whether the guest is hiring a car or using the taxi. When it is car hire, Fidelio will meet you near the apartment. Y…….. Fidelio is a working taxi driver, so he needs to plan his time. The charge for the handover of the keys is a one-off payment of €20.00, payable direct to Fidelio. He needs to be paid for his time and gas. Then you can just leave the keys in the apartment when you leave.” The Additional Information document states under Transport: “As an exception, [if you hire a car from the airport], we can arrange for you to pick up the keys also from Fidelio at snack bar Mare, outside the apartment block. Fidelio needs to be paid for the effort @ €20.00. If the flight is delayed arriving, please inform Fidelio.” By Car from the Airport to Aylevarroo Apartment Document. “Firstly, immediately you have picked up the car, you need to call/text my taxi driver, to tell him you are leaving the airport. If you experience any delays, please also let Fidelio know new ETA. Fidelio is a working taxi driver, so he needs to be paid for his time and travel to the apartment. The fee is €20, payable direct to Fidelio. I keep very tight control of the keys, for mine and your security Goncalves states “We wrote to her twice that we were willing to pick up the keys for free wherever and whenever she wanted.” I am not sure which bits of the emails I sent about payment for key transfer, Goncalves did not understand. Goncalves says “We checked the TripAdvisor protection policy: it is clearly stipulated that any payment outside their platform voids the guarantee.” The payment to TripAdvisor/Holiday Lettings is for accommodation. TripAdvisor / Holiday Lettings agreed that the request for payment for the key transfer was a valid request and asked Goncalves to pay the fee. Goncalves says: “The stay went well and two days later, we received an order to pay an additional 70 pounds! Mrs. Connie's cleaning lady would have passed us leaving the apartment and there were 4 occupants instead of 3!! We never met his cleaning lady.” The apartment block is located in a very small community. My guests are always seen coming and going and are made to feel very welcome by the local restaurants and community. Three people were registered to stay in the apartment. Mr Goncalves paid TripAdvisor and they paid £428.00 me for 3 persons. @ £360 per week when 2 people share and £10 per day of each additional person up to 2 extra persons, less my fee to TripAdvisor. The payment covered 3 persons in the apartment, that week. My housekeeper witnessed 4 people leaving the apartment block, 2 adults and two teenagers, one male and one female. I brought this to Mr Goncalves attention. He denied the 4th person was staying in the apartment. Thankfully guests with Mr Goncalves attitude towards renting a holiday apartment are rare.

Response from the owner Shelley, Thank you so much for your lovely generous review. I am so pleased you enjoyed your holiday so much and plan to return. I am also delighted that you took the time to enjoy what the penthouse has to offer, well equipped with superb ocean views and also took time to explore the wonderful island. The penthouse is also my home from home and I entertain a lot when I am there. Fidelio is a treasure, fluent English, local and very obliging. I am pleased you found the public transport clean and efficient. I never hire a car, even when I am there for 6 weeks, because the bus service is so good and I use Fidelio at other times. Thank you again for your review. Much appreciated and I look forward to you being able to stay again very soon. Connie G. Penn.

“Superb, very spacious, clean and very well appointed apartment.”

Reviewed 20 Feb 2022

The apartment is on the top floor and has a large wrap around balcony giving great views north east and west. In addition there are conservatories on both sides. The bathroom is large and the main bedroom has masses of storage space. The living room / kitchen is a joy with table and easy chairs and panoramic views to the east and the kitchen itself wants for nothing. Contact with Connie from first booking and during the stay was brilliant. Staying in this apartment is more like being invited to someone's home than my previous experiences of some apartments as it is so well appointed. We love Reis Magos and have been coming to the area for years but this is the first stay in the apartment. Reis Magos is not as busy as Funchal which suits us but it has everything that you need. There are plenty of bars and restaurants in the area and there are supermarkets on both sides of the block and a bakery for fresh bread and pasteis da nata ( custard tarts) in the morning. A very local bus stop will take you to Funchal (15 mins for the express and about 45 for the local buses at a cost of around 2.20 euros per adult) . We tend to hire a car and there was plenty of parking on each side of the building and there is easy access to the expressway for travel to all parts of the island. Would we return - definitely as soon as we can.

Response from the owner Brian & Lynne. Thank you so much for your in-depth review and for your very kind words. I am absolutely delighted with your comment that it "was like being invited into someone's home", because that is how I want it to be - "a home from home" for my guests. Indeed that is what the apartment is for me - my home in Madeira. I entertain in the apartment a lot when I am there. That is why the "kitchen wants for nothing". Thank you very much again for taking the time to write the review. It is much appreciated and I look forward to being able to rent the apartment to you again in the future. Connie.

“Just great!”

Reviewed 17 Dec 2012

This apartment was everything it seemed from the description and the photos: incredibly light and airy with a whole wall of picture windows looking along the coast to the east, out to the Desertas Islands and up the mountains. We were very comfortable, and appreciated that it was so well equipped with plenty of crockery, cutlery, pots and pans, heaters, seating for inside and out, and bedding. The shower was full 'power' ... and hot. All in all, a joy to 'come home to' after sightseeing and exploring! For two of us, having a separate TV room was a luxury ... but nice! I loved sitting at the picture window at night looking at all the lights up the hillside. A couple of evenings when it was too chilly to actually eat 'al fresco' we opened the patio doors and set the table right in front of the opening - we could even hear the sea on the shore from there! We also saw some fabulous sunsets from the west side of the balcony. Sometimes the wind seemed to get up, but that is to be expected on the 13th floor. There are low sun loungers provided though, allowing the surrounding wall to give some protection from the wind. It was immaculately clean and Connie's dealings with us were impeccable. We have stayed in Canico de Baixo several times during the last few years and find the resort very attractive and quiet. Our favourite local restaurants - both within a few minutes' walk of the apartment and with lovely seafront terraces - are 'Atlantis' (fish, and salad buffet) at Galo Lido; and 'Inn and Art' Hotel (steak on the stone, espetada, and fish, all cooked in their wood oven in front of you). Galo Pizzeria is very good too. We always hire a car and the apartment is only 10-15 minutes drive from the airport. Parking was never a problem. 15-20 minutes gets you into central Funchal. Simples!
