Famous for its hot springs which were greatly appreciated by the Romans, Fortuna is fast becoming popular once again as the town becomes an important centre for hydrotherapy, beauty treatments and other therapies associated with the natural hot mineral water. Fortuna is a typical Spanish town, as yet unexploited, with peaceful streets and a white church with a curious tower. For country lovers, to the south of Fortuna, there is a large lake, enclosed in a nature preservation area and surrounded by woods, ideal for walking or fishing. These waters contain several elements and minerals that are often touted as a cure-all with health giving qualities and mysterious powers. Having said that the best thing about it, I think, is in the manner in which mother nature has created environmentally friendly warm water system, and they're therapeutic. Thousands of people flock to these springs in order to alleviate medical conditions namely, for rheumatism and breathing disorders and we have one just up the road, in Fortuna. The RomansFortuna, a town not too far from Murcia, was home to a large Roman community, who made the most of the running hot water and used natural thermal springs to create their luxury baths. Most Roman baths and or buildings, were heated via hot furnaces, by burning wood, placed under the floors, leaving sufficient space for hot air to circulate in open areas, giving them a controllable heating system. However, in the baths to be found in Fortuna, the earth already provided warm and therapeutic water. No wonder the Romans hung around for a few centuries…Bathing was not merely a necessity, it was a social function mainly for the privileged few and a place for social intercourse (I said 'social'…), where business and who to chuck to the lions were possibly discussed. These warm water springs in Fortuna are famous throughout Spain with the Leana Balneario being it's oldest and most endearing. Situated on the outskirts of the main town heading in the direction of Yecla a small community exists solely because, and for, the springs. Hotels date back to 1837 belonging to the Spanish Cascales family and still do to this day. sitting on the hills just below from where the water flows visitors can see the ancient Roman baths. In 1860, Juan Cascales Font began some renovations to the semi-abandoned spa's whilst constructing a new hotel (which is still there) and during the Spanish Civil War the hotel spa served as a hospital to help wounded soldiers. In the 1970's, Spanish Director, Sainz de Heredia filmed 'Historias de la Television' (The History of Television) where singer, Concha Velazco sung her hit for the first time in the swimming pool 'Una chica ye ye' (you must have bought it…)Tourism in FortunaBy the 1990's they realised the place could be a goldmine… I mean a tourist attraction and things really got going with people visiting Fortuna Balneario for its therapeutic and tranquil waters from all over the world. Many came for its beauty or holistic medical treatments, as the waters contain rich minerals, namely iron and salt, or for the landscape in which it finds itself, which is tranquil but with a wealth of history. The village of Abanilla with a population of 7000 is a few kilometres west of Fortuna. It is 45km to the coast from Fortuna.San Javier airport is 38km from Fortuna, Alicante airport is 60km away. A new International Airport we are told to be the same size as Alicante, is due to open next year, just south of Murcia. Altorreal Golf Club is 10km the other side of Murcia.FORTUNA Spa Baths (Murcia) SPAIN General infoPopulation: 6.652Height: 240 metresDistance from Murcia: 25 KmPlaces to visit:Parroquia de San Roque,Paraje del Cortao de las Peñas
