“Wonderful wintertime treat” Arrived with my family just after Christmas as, we were interested to see the festival or fiesta for The Three Kings. What a treat - we saw the arrival of the 3 Kings into arriondas on horseback on the night of the 5th January and that after we enjoyed the fireworks. This was a great family occasion, as old and young were both made welcome in the local bars. There was a real buzz and anticipation as the next day people woke to find presents left in empty shoes on the doorstep! Even in winter, we still managed to enjoy walking in the mountains around the house and surrounding areas, which have crystal clear views of the snowy Picos de Europa in the distance. We loved staying here so much that this was our second visit to the house and our first was in early autumn a couple of years back. We had sunny beaches to ourselves and enjoyed walking along the Jurassic coastline where you can see dinosaur footprints and caves. We also hiked around the lakes at Covadonga - breath-taking! We ate out a fair bit at local restaurants which generally offer good hearty food at very reasonable prices, but shopping at the local supermarkets is marvellous too. We found excellent regional produce - ham, cheese, wine and delicious olive oil - makes picnicking a doodle. Get the friendly and informative owners to tell you about the best local restaurant about 30 mins walk away, and bring your appetite! House is lovely and comfortable and has everything you need for a relaxing self catering holiday - can't wait go back again.

Why Asturias?

The northern Spanish region of Asturias is known for its lush, forested landscapes, picturesque coastline, stunning beaches and array of religious sites. Medieval churches dot the mountain tops and coastal resorts are busy with beach-goers. Its exciting variety and rural splendor make it a popular vacation spot, ideal for a break in a FlipKey rental.

Towns and cities in Asturias

The region’s capital is Oviedo. Wander along the historic old town’s cobbled streets to see its churches, squares, museums and elegant cathedral, before stopping at a churreria to enjoy sugar-sprinkled churros dipped in indulgent chocolate sauce. Oviedo’s newer quarters are a joy for pedestrians, too, with virtually traffic-free plazas and streets to explore.

Oviedo is in the heart of the Cider Route, so don’t miss your chance to taste this local apple specialty in an authentic sidreria. You can identify them by wooden beamed floors and unique, flavor-enhancing method of pouring the beverage from a great height.

Be sure to venture beyond the capital and explore some smaller Asturian towns. They range from quaint northern fishing villages like Luarca to beautiful inland towns like Cangas de Onís, nestled in greenery.

Things to do in Asturias

A vacation in Asturias doesn’t have to be all sightseeing in cities and towns, though. The region’s landscape provides endless opportunities for a more adventurous break. Why not try kayaking down the Sella River for fresh air and a shot of adrenaline? And if spectacular views give you a thrill, go for a hike in the Picos de Europa National Park. You can even look into the region’s ancient history by exploring the cave art of the Teverga Prehistoric Park.

The Asturian coast

Asturias boasts many beautiful coastal towns including Gijon, which is also one of the most popular. With bustling streets and a sweeping crescent of sand, it’s a wonderful blend of city and beach vacation.

Miles of beautiful beach extend along the coast, so you’ll likely find a deserted stretch of golden sand to call your own. Don’t miss the famous rock formations at Cuevas de Mar where centuries of crashing waves have worked their magic, leaving spectacular stone archways to admire.

Traditional Asturian house in tranquil setting
Rest and relaxation doesn't come any better than this

Touring the Cantabrian coast was a new experience for us and La Rondita proved to be very convenient for the day trips we had planned to both coastal and inland attractions. Along the coast, we drove as far as Santander in the east and Cudillero in the west. Southwards, we visited the Picos de Europa and nearby villages. We tended to use the 'N' routes on our outward journeys so that we could stop along the way as often as we wished and, when possible, we returned to base on the E70 motorway. What we particularly liked about La Rondita, was the easy access to beautiful beaches and amazing bays which were close to cafes and restaurants in picturesque harbours and marinas. Our favourite places were Gijon, Lastres, Ribadesella, and especially Llanes on the coastal route and Cangas de Onis and Covadonga, in and around the Picos. Wherever we went, there were many family owned restaurants off the beaten track. Their local home cooked dishes were delicious, especially 'Fabada', which is a must in asturias. Each evening at La Rondita, we sat al fresco in the garden and treated ourselves to a glass or two of well chilled sparkling Cava as we watched the sunset fade beyond the distant mountains. We will be back.see more
