Description from owner
Description
Casa Barbara is an original alpujarra house with beams, stone floors and wood stove set in a tiny village at 1000 metres off the beaten track. There is one large bedroom with two zones, a double bed and two singles,a large living room /diner with books and a kitchen and bathroom with plentiful hot water. A south facing balcony and roof terrace with views all around make it ideal for relaxing and winter sun.
This is walking country with old mule paths that connect the 7 villages of La Taha, an area settled by the moors whose architecture and terraces of almonds and olives with traditional watering system are still maintained. The local villages have small bars and restaurants famous for local ham and wine although they will also cater for vegetarians.
There is a local festival in August and a piano bar 15 minutes walk away which showcases local and visiting performers. The local artistic community has a exhibition centre in Pitres 4km away . There is an open air swimming pool at the campsite in Pitres and also one at the hotel in Mecina. Free wifi is availablein the house and in many bars.
But mostly this is a place to experience the mountains, listen to the birdsong, watch the shepherds with their flocks or potter in the countryside and relax away from the world.).

“Great stay for relaxation and reading”
Both the house and the region are lovely places to stay in. The bookshelf is full of exquisite English literature. The rooftop terasse is great for gazing at the Milky Way at night, or to have dinner … More

“Lovely week in the Alpujarras in a traditional Spanish house.”
We thoroughly enjoyed our week in Barbara’s house. It is an amazing old Spanish house that has been sympathetically modernised including the addition of skilfully placed skylights that let the s… More

“Perfect for relaxing and walking”

Response from the owner Also a haven for book lovers and escapists, sitting on the balcony or roof terrace is a wonderful way to relax. For walkers, there are signposted walks that start right outside the door.

“Didn't want to go home!”
We've just returned from an absolutely fab 2 weeks in Ferreirola, staying at Casa Barbara. We'd previously visited here whilst holidaying in Capileira earlier in the year....and that's where our love affair started! We thought it impossible to match, let alone better the outstanding views and atmosphere of Capileira....but found ourselves drawn back to Ferreirola a further 3 times during our 7 day stay! Both saying (almost at the same time) 'We have to stay here when we come back'! In our opinion more dramatic views with perfect tranquillity! How lucky we were to find 'Casa Barbara'...and of course Barbara herself. A lovely warm welcome and the cosiest of houses. Full of charm, character and history! The kitchen perfectly adequate if you prefer to 'dine in', but with so many inexpensive restaurants serving good food within La Taha and surrounding areas, we opted not to. You have the choice of not 1, but 3 areas to dine (dining area, covered balcony and roof terrace - with views to die for!). Bathroom roomy with lots of hot water and a living/dining area with a super and varied array of books! You can start many of the walks right from the door, or just enjoy the house relaxing on that amazing roof terrace. You really do see something different every time you're up there. I could waffle on forever with a range of superlatives, however, will simply but LOUDLY say 'Just go and sample 'Casa Barbara' and the beauty of Ferreirola for yourselves....just not when we want to be there though' ha!!!! Meant to say: Barbara is as obtrusive or unobtrusive as you wish. Sadly, she wasn't there much at all when we were there, but always left a number where she could be contacted in case of emergencies.

“The best holiday I have ever had, either alone or as a family. Truly magical.”
I am extremely reluctant to write a review about Casa Barbara, and Ferreirola in general, because I don't really want anyone else to know about it! It's mine!! But I'm going to anyway... The village itself is amazing in so many ways. From the beautiful views which entice you on the journey up there, to the first views you catch of it peeking through the mountain greenery, to the picturesque white houses and narrow sloping, winding streets all framed with the gorgeous foliage of the Alpujarras. We were only there for a week, but the memories of Ferreirola and the wonderful friendships we made there are etched on our minds forever. We were all in tears leaving the place, and as soon as we got home we got on the t'internet and booked again for the following year! Casa Barbara itself is perfectly located right in the heart of the village. Perched over a stone clad pathway, right beside the only village cafe, and with a view from its balcony that quite literally takes your breath away the first time you see it. And if you think that one's good, take a trip up onto the roof!! Wow!! Ferreirola has very little in it apart from the cafe, but Pitres, the largest of the Taha villages, is only a short drive away, where you can find a public outdoor pool, supermarket, bank, pharmacy, bars, restaurants etc. etc..... What Ferreirola does have, however, is a natural effervescent spring, free flowing mountain water in the village square, a beautiful church, no end of breathtaking mountain walks, a bespoke guitar maker, a music academy, and some of the nicest, most interesting and friendly mix of people you will ever meet. Right, now on to the details. The village is very well hidden, but with Barbara's directions we had no problem at all finding it. We stayed in the house with our 2 children, aged 7 and 2. Thankfully our littlest one is a fairly calm, well behaved toddler, as the living room of the house has an open stairway leading right up to the middle of it. So if you have boisterous small children, bring a stairgate. And a wee tip that I will offer you.... hang some sort of brightly coloured scarf or something in the doorways of the bedrooms and the bathroom as they are quite low, and by doing this you will avoid whacking your head on the crossbar as my clumsy husband did! Several times!! And if you love to read, make sure you don't bring any books as Barabara has two bookshelves full of them! There is no air conditioning or anything in the house, but the thick stone walls and small windows mean that it stays pretty cool in there anyway, and we were there in the middle of July, so pretty hot then. Also, stock up on groceries and such before you get there, as once you get to Casa Barbara you probably won't want to leave.

“Charming house in idyllic village”
Ferreirola is one of the most beautiful of the Alpujarran villages and Casa Barbara is a perfect rustic retreat. The property you rent is the top floor of an old moorish style house, full of bohemian charm: with wooden beams, skylights and a covered balcony with amazing views across the Rio Trevelez gorge. The place has everything you need and best of all has a really chilled out ambience. You can almost feel the peace. The house is on the edge of the village and within seconds you are on tiny donkey paths winding through terraces of lemon and olive trees. Its a perfect spot for a walking holiday or just for relaxing and working your way through the fantastic collection of books. Barbara was a great host and even arranged drivers for us at the last minute when we thought we would be unable to hire a car. When we then cancelled this, it was no problem. This is definitely somewhere I would love to visit again. I can't think of anywhere in the world more relaxing.

“We stepped inside the perfect mountain village postcard!”
This was the best experience of our 6 week overseas holiday. Barbara welcomed us warmly and was very helpful with suggesting lovely walks and recommending local cafes and restaurants in the area. The house has the romance of the past with exposed beams and stone flagstones but with modern comforts. Relaxing in the shade on the terrace with a glass of wine was a favourite pastime in the hot mid afternoons. We explored the unspoilt village enjoying the twisting streets with different views around each corner. The locals were friendly and one of my favourite memories was dining at an outside table watching the sun go down over the mountains while live music played.
