Description

Apartment 'Wellington' so named by your hosts for the historical links with the 'Duke of Wellington' in the region, is situated in the village of Vale do Remigio, 5 kms. from the town of Mortagua in the Province of Viseu, Central Portugal.

Vale do Remigio nestles in a wooded valley of eucalyptus and pine trees with a friendly local population whose daily lives proceed in a slow and peaceful manner.

The apartment is situated on the ground floor of the property. A private entrance opens into a modern open plan living/dining and kitchen/breakfast area and is complemented by an en-suite bedroom. Full central heating is installed for those cooler winter evenings.

A fully fitted kitchen with all necessary utilities - cooker/fridge freezer/kettle/toaster/coffee maker/crockery and utensils, together with full laundry services are provided.

The lounge area provides comfortable seating and boasts sat.tv/dvd/cd and Internet availability. The dining area is tastefully decorated and comprises table and seating.

A private patio for sole use is available whilst the upper balcony with views to the Sierra Estrella (Star Mountains), summer kitchen and gardens and BBQ area are at your disposal.

The apartment is ideally located in this unspoilt area of Central Portugal with fantastic scenery - mountains, lakes,river beaches, wooded hillside valleys revealing traditional villages, the area providing unlimited scope for walking,cycling,water sports,fishing. The region is steeped in history from the Romans and Saracens, religious confrontations, through Napoleon and Wellington to the founding of democracy in 1974 and the peaceful 'Carnation Revolution' seeing the ousting of the dictator Salazar.

The nearby town of Mortgua has all necessary amenities - health centre, dentists,opticians,veterinary,post office,lawyers. A tourist office is located in the town hall while numerous cafes/restaurants and supermarkets provide daily provisions. Sports facilities include an indoor and oudoor swimming pool,tennis courts and gymnasium. Open air markets are held twice monthy and are a must visit, if not to buy goods then lunch is paramount with BBQ chicken,fries,salad,bread and wine costing as little as 6 Euros.

The historic university city of Coimbra is a 40 minute drive and thrives on its bustling students life and hosts many musical,theatrical and art events throughout the year.Tours of the city and cruises on the river are very popular.

Local gastronomic delicacies include roasted kid, suckling pig and numerous smoked sausage all complimented by fresh local vegetables and regional Dao wines.

Numerous village festivals take place throughout the year, whilst the forest trails and mountain roads play host to the Portuguese Rally - 4X4 - mountain bike - quad bike and vintage car rallies.

The unspoilt beaches of the Silver coast are only 1 hour away and excellent road and rail links between Lisbon and Porto airports - 2 hours and 1.5 hours respectively - make for comfortable travelling. The northern Spanish seaports of Santander abd Bilbao can be reached from the region in 6/7 hours.
