"The Stone Dream"

Our experience in the tiny hamlet of stone lanes and houses was, to us, unforgettable. It is set on a hill overlooking a valley that leads to the coast. In clear weather you might get lucky enough to see the ocean on the horizon line. At your fingertips are hiking paths and cobblestone lanes, lined with Eucalyptus trees, leading to other farms and villages, terraced vineyards, and beautiful fields and forests. Paco de Mato's House has been renovated with care, thought, authenticity, and style. The 2 bedrooms are exquisite! The villagers are wonderful! We became friends with a few of the house cleaners and others in the village. One of them is a cook and also artist. If you are lucky enough to meet her, she may ask you if you'd like a real Portuguese home-cooked meal brought to your house. We did, and it was maybe the best meal we had all vacation! We were also able to go to a craft sale the villagers had one day right next to our house. The Portuguese government is working hard to develop the old villages throughout the country in support of rural tourism. As part of this initiative, there are tours sponsored by the organization that bring people up to see how the locals in the rural areas and the renters are integrating. The craft sale was so fun. The villagers could not have been more cheerful, and excited as they were talking about the art! Their excitement oozed out of them, and it was contagious! The owner of our house and her son couldn't have been nicer. He greeted us upon arrival, and was most helpful. They truly care about their renters and want them to have a quality vacation. Paco de Mato's House is a place to return to. To me, it was like a dream being in this stone village- isolated from commercialism and materialism. It felt pure.....untouched by things negative.
