Description from owner

Description

Our charming traditional village house set within the walls of Pigna's historic village centre is the perfect place to relax, experience a slower pace of life and simply enjoy time living in the moment in the peaceful garden surrounded by breathtaking mountain views.

Stepping up from the narrow street the house has a fully fitted dining kitchen opening up to the vaulted ceiling lounge (with double sofa bed) and downstairs bathroom with shower. Directly outside the kitchen you can dine at the family size outdoor dining area with shade and BBQ and the garden extends with some additional seating and herbs and vines. On the upper level of the house (accessed via an outdoor staircase) are two large bedrooms, one with a large double bed and the other with a triple sleeper, double on the bottom and single on top bunk style bed. There is another shower room and toilet also on the upper level. Outside from the upper level there is a cute balcony directly off the double bedroom where you can enjoy the night sky from as well as the large upper terrace equip with sunbeds and shade.

The house sleeps 6 comfortably and is very charming and unique. It is unusual to have such a lovely private garden within the historic part of Pigna village.

The house is full of character with original tiled floors, stone vaulted ceilings and a large open fire, as well a large areas of private outside space and gardens. Children can play safely between the lower and upper garden's as the villa's garden's are totally secure.

It is situated just within the medieval walls of the old center but with good access to nearby parking.

A fantastic 1 in 2 of our guests book a return visit or recommend a friend!

Pigna is an Italian medieval village just over the border from the French Riviera. It is located within the foothills below the mountains and set in breathtaking countryside. It is only a 20 minute drive from the coastline of both the French and Italian Rivieras, including Monte Carlo / Monaco, San Remo, Bordegheria and is surrounded by many more beautiful and interesting medieval villages.

It's a special place where time seems to have stood still and you can enjoy a real Italian holiday but is so close to the charms of the Italian and French coast.

Within the village of Pigna there are many amenities including local grocery shops (one of which is a hundred metres from the house), 4 restaurants including a local wood fired oven bar/pizzeria and a brilliant family run traditional restaurant, a few local bars, tennis court, children's play park and Pharmacy.

Take a stroll when you wake to the local cafe, order a cappuccino and delight at the homemade cakes & pastries; a perfect way to start your day the Italian way!

There are local places of interest in the village such as historic churches and the town square which has it's own local produce market every Saturday morning. The medieval heart of the village is very impressive, almost castle like and of course has no cars. There are many medieval buildings and places to explore, including the original bread ovens, town square etc. In addition there are fantastic walking and climbing trails throughout the mountain's accessed from many locally sign posted paths from the village where you can explore historic sites and churches, hidden streams and rock pools with river swimming pools very close by.

The area has many attractions and is a beautiful combination of mountains and sea.

Italy is a food lovers paradise and the food in this region is typically homemade and rustic. Small village family run restaurants often without menus, just the food of the day, as well as fantastic wood fired oven pizza's, seafood specialties at the coast and Michelin fine dining. The 4 restaurants in the village are great examples and are within walking distance of the house. This area really is a food lovers paradise and has many unique dishes from this beautiful part of Italy.

In addition we can advise on any questions you have...things to do etc, as well as help to arrange weddings, special occasions etc.

Getting around

A car is recommended although public transport is available. The train line runs all the way along the coast from France through into Italy and along into San Remo. The local train station to Pigna is Ventimiglia then there are regular buses available up the mountains into Pigna itself and beyond. We can also arrange pick up from the airport and return for approx 100 euro per journey.

Interaction with guest

We are available any time on email or phone. Our friend Georgia also lives on the same street as the villa. She will welcome you on arrival, help with directions to the house and parking the car in the village as well as showing you around the house when you arrive. She is also available throughout your stay for advice and help from medical support to booking a restaurant or giving you recommendations, our previous guests find her very useful.

“A fantastic holiday”

Reviewed 20 Jun 2017

Pigna is a charming village with really friendly locals. As long as you make an effort to say good morning they seemed very happy to have us in their town. We swam in rock pools, visited nearby villages of Apricale, Dolceaqua and Castel Vittoria which were beautiful. We went for leisurely walks and enjoyed good wine and food. What's not to like??? The house was lovely - very clean and welcoming with a bottle of red waiting for us when we arrived! We went with our 2 adult daughters who were equally charmed by the house and the locality. I would definitely go again.

“Ottimo! The only downside was having to leave.”

Reviewed 16 Aug 2016

I had booked our holiday almost a year in advance having seen Pigna featured on a Place in the Sun. Ian and Sue's house seemed perfect as it offered lots of indoor and outdoor space for me,my husband and two children aged 13 and 10 and was situated in the old winding streets so was central to the cafe's and restaurants but gave a real sense of going back in time as well as feeling like you lived there ( wishful thinking ! ). I was looking forward to the holiday so much I was worried it might not live up to our expectations - In fact it surpassed them and I loved everything about Pigna and the house and whilst I usually like to visit different places the only question is when we will be re booking. The information supplied by Ian and Sue beforehand and in the Villa was so helpful - my family joked with me that I was forever reading the " bible". There was so much to do and whilst we managed to visit Rock Pools ( stunning ), the beach at Menton and San Remo, Monaco and Monte Carlo and many of the picturesque neighbouring villages, experienced a festival in Pigna which my husband loved dancing at ! I feel I have to return as there is so much more to do/ see. We enjoyed the food, wine and fantastic variety of restaurants., we found the prices unbelievably reasonable unless you went to the more touristy places which is only to be expected, The local cafe Des el Roy did the most amazing pastries, cakes and coffee and Ice creams and again we couldn't believe the prices. Our children loved the holiday we all agreed it was our best yet and as I said we are already arguing about when to go back. Before booking Ian warned about booking car hire outside of the airport terminal, I stupidly booked a car with Touché based at the Park Inn hotel opposite terminal 1, our flight was 2 hours late but even so we arrived before 9pm and the desk was closed so just a warning to avoid this company, there are plenty of others at the airport. So it's just left to say a massive thank you to Ian Sue and Penny for introducing us to this lovely unspolt place and your gorgeous holiday home which offers so much more than just a holiday rental. Wine on arrival, comfy beds even medical supplies, great selection of books and DVDS if you wanted them. Thanks also to Georgia who met us and provided lots of helpful advise, she is English maintains a Birmingham accent but lives in Pigna so am very envious. I loved getting up in the morning opening the bedroom door onto the balcony and looking up at the village Castel Vittoria on the hill opposite and seeing the Sun light it up. My mornings back in Ramsbottom just don't have the same effect !!

Hope you're not too sad to be home although understand how you miss the place, we do too!! Best wishes, Ian & Sue
