Description from owner

Description

Le Manoir is set-up to cater for families with children.

You & your children can expect to meet families with other children.

We provide a safe secluded environment for them to play in, & they are made to feel very welcome.

Sitting on your South facing terrace or indoors in Le Manoir, you will enjoy your privacy. However, Le Manoir attracts an interesting group of families, many with interesting backgrounds. You may find that you wish to share their company.

There is plenty of communal space to meet your fellow guests.

When you stay at Le Manoir you can choose between staying in this relaxing country estate, & enjoying the wild life, & sunshine, or exploring the Dordogne valley.

You will find us on the property. Nancy, my wife, & myself - Peter, have owned Le Manoir for 18 years.

We are here to discuss & suggest places for you to visit, & things you may wish to do.

Further details indoors

Entrance to the property is from the courtyard through the original doors into a large hall.

A door leads to the well-equipped kitchen with dishwasher, double electric oven with gas hobs, large American fridge/freezer (The ice machine is a godsend in hot weather!),
There is a breakfast table in the kitchen. There is a door from the kitchen to a storage area and then to the bathroom with shower, toilet and large hand basin. The washing machine is also here.

From the hall there is an entrance into the 35-ft living/dining room with its high beamed ceiling.

There are 3 comfortable sofas. TV with digital satellite (BBC), video recorder, DVD, & home theatre system. There is a massive chestnut dining table.

Stairs from the hall lead to a spacious open landing with access to six bedrooms:

3 with king-size beds.
2 with twin beds.
1 with a double bed & a single bed.
The sixth bedroom is accessed through the fifth.

There is a large bathroom with full size bath, toilet, large basin and bidet and an additional toilet & wash basin.

The second "bathroom" has a loo, wash hand basin, & shower.
Outside there is a full length south facing terrace overlooking the garden with fishpond. There are steps down to the garden.

In the winter the powerful central heating will keep you warm. The added attraction of a wood-burning stove keeps the pyromaniacs amongst us amused.

This house is as child friendly as possible.
There are stair gates on the outside terrace, & on the landing.

Getting around

To get here by air Bergerac Airport is our closest airport. Brive is also only an hour away. Bordeaux is 2 hours drive. Limoges is 3 hours away. If you are coming from Ireland do not even think of Rodez! It is a long way away over windy roads! By train: Bergerac is the closest station with car hire available. By car: We are about 8 1/2 hours from Calais. 6 1/2 from St. Malo. Once here, I would suggest that a car is essential.

Interaction with guest

We, - Nancy & Peter, live "on-site" but out of sight. Like Nanny Mcphee,(The children's film), - We are here when you need us. We can help with: - Restaurant bookings. - Maintenance issues. - Take your order for fresh bread & croissants to be delivered each morning. - Help with baby sitting (Notice appreciated). - And more!

“The Perfect Christmas”

Reviewed 26 Jan 2015

Le Manoir is an excellent venue for parties of 10 or more. The facilities within the house make for a very comfortable stay. Two log fires, plenty of hot water, good mix of bedroom accommodation, extremely large living area with large dining table, well fitted out kitchen. Our hosts had provided Xmas decorations and the Xmas tree was absolutely stunning. Like any vacation property location is very important. St Marcel Du Perigord is a quiet village but in easy reach of St Alvere and Lalinde from which you can obtain most things you require. I would highly recommend the property and location plus the owners hospitality and friendliness made for a most enjoyable stay. Will be back soon

“A great holiday for all to remember at Le Manoir”

Reviewed 15 Jul 2012

We spent eight glorious years holidaying at Le Manoir de St Marcel. We enjoyed our time there so much that each year we returned we extended our stay until we settled on an annual 5 weeks, all through the summer. Glorious! Whether it’s just you and the kids or a group of 13 it is the perfect place to spent quality time with friends and family. The owners, Peter and Nancy are very friendly and welcoming and especially generous with their time in making your stay perfect as possible. The Manoir is large, light and airy and well equipped for all your holiday needs and every time time we arrived the place was spotless. It boasts a large kitchen and enormous reception room to entertain in. An outside terrace spans the length of the whole house with wonderful views of the countryside. We spent countless evenings barbecuing on the terrace accompanied by breathtaking sunsets. A pristine refreshing pool big enough for everyone provides the ideal spot for a cool down, with sun loungers for full sunning but with plenty of options for shade and long afternoon snoozes. While the property easily handles a group of 13 without feeling overcrowded at all there are also plenty of areas to catch some private time, on a lawn, under a tree or in the woods. St Marcel itself is a beautiful village with a variety of easy to follow signed walks for those who want to take a stroll or a run. The village also boasts a gourmet restaurant, Lou Peyrol where you will be looked after very well indeed. There is plenty of interest all under an hour away and most just 20 minutes away including canoeing, castles, day markets, night markets, river swims, karting and bowling. If you’re looking for a holiday to remember that ticks all the boxes for everyone I recommend Le Manoir de St Marcel. We loved it so much we bought the house next door! Maybe see you there.

“Perfect place for young families to relax and unwind”

Reviewed 8 Jul 2012

If you are looking for a place to chill out, hide away and relax, this is the perfect spot for you. We will be returning to the estate of Le Manoir for the fourth time next year as it’s just the perfect place for us as busy working people to get away from it all. With a young child to keep happy, here we have found the perfect balance of ‘do nothing’ and ‘let’s explore’. If you want to immerse yourself in French culture, or stick to speaking English all your holiday, either is possible at Le Manoir. The holiday estate comprises of five distinctly rural French buildings of varying sizes and styles, including Le Manoir itself, all set amongst a few acres of well-mown meadow and surrounding woodland. For our first two visits we stayed in Le Pigeonnier, a wonderful miniature fairy tale tower for two (and our half!) For our third trip we stayed in La Porcherie which afforded us more room and additional conveniences. Both are characterful and unique properties typified by the beautiful rustic charm of Perigordian sandstone wall construction. La Porcherie, a quirky and delightful former pigsty, has two bedrooms. One of these, a twin room on the ground floor, has access onto the grassed courtyard. From right here, if you are fortunate, you may spot a hoopoe, black redstart or red squirrel. A second, (double) bedroom is upstairs and from this level you have access to a small secluded grassed area from where a path leads to access your car. La Porcherie has a comfortable exposed stonewall lounge with new flat screen TV and dining table. Just outside the lounge area is a well screened patio, perfect for outdoor meals. A further door to the patio comes from the kitchen where you will find a gas cooker, fridge/freezer and a dishwasher – all the basics for a home from home. There is a two section bathroom with both bath and separate enclosed shower unit. The washing machine is useful, especially if you have children. The building comprises of three sections nestled together to form the complete suite of accommodation. It is well equipped and comfortable but not so perfect that we can’t relax for fear of our little one (or ourselves) accidentally causing a breakage. Your British hosts, Nancy and Peter are very experienced in welcoming younger families to their holiday homes and various safety needs and equipment for younger children have been well planned. They are both friendly and discrete, helpful without being intrusive and are always willing to offer advice on local attractions, places to eat or shop. We love the wood, stone and tiles of all the buildings here and the surrounding grounds are just great to spend sunny days hanging out in. There is a large pool, shared with other guests (apart from those at Le Manoir itself who have another for themselves). Never busy, the pool is a wonderful facility for active children or parents who want a relaxing dip during the last sunshine of the day. If you or your older children need to use the internet, there is a free Wi-Fi facility which worked very well when we took our laptop this year. The games barn with table tennis and pool table is also an attraction. We love the birdsong (especially the nightingale in springtime), the chime of the church bell, Bergerac wines and being miles from busy roads. The very quiet adjacent village of St Marcel du Perigord consists of only the Mayor’s office and social hall, a stream and small playground and a few village houses. It is also home to one of The Dordogne’s best small restaurants where diners, both visiting holidaymakers to the area and discerning Dordogne residents, travel great distances to discover the delights. This is within staggering distance of your front door at Le Manoir. The Rivers Dordogne and Vezere are nearby and we have enjoyed several days paddling along them in a canoe, watching the birds of prey and the swallows as we drift downstream. There are superb markets in several nearby towns and villages on various days, the best being at the Bastille town of Issigeac on Sunday morning, very convenient after a Saturday arrival for buying fresh local produce including cheeses and wines. The gardens at Marqueyssac are a firm favourite day out from Le Manoir. There are also prehistoric caves to visit and waterparks open depending on the time of year. Le Manoir has a communal covered space where those renting the properties can meet up in the evening to share a glass or two of Bergerac, exchange stories and chat. We have enjoyed spontaneous get-togethers and planned outdoor meals with other guests in the warm evenings. Enjoying yourself in this way is not compulsory if you like to be more private, but certainly worth trying. A special place where you and your family can forget the rat race, enjoy the outdoors, good food and friendly people and build lasting memories. If you wish to write or paint or draw in peace, the tranquillity of Le Manoir is ideal. The perfect antidote to the stress of modern British life. Give Le Manoir a try, je ne regretted rien.

“Heaven”

Reviewed 25 Jun 2012

Just returned from this little oasis in France, felt I had been transferred to another planet and the word “relax” started the second we arrived. Set in the most beautiful countryside, we settled into a comfortable and well equipped Gite. There are 2 swimming pools on site which are far enough away if peace and quiet is required but still only a short walk if you need to cool down. The areas and gardens surrounding the Gite are well kept with beautiful wild flowers mixed with a variety of other plants which attract a stunning array of wildlife. Butterflies are many in number and species including some rare types that can no longer be found in the UK. Peter and Nancy are great hosts and nothing was too much trouble. Always on hand if needed but never intrusive and even ensured we had fresh bread delivered for breakfast. The Gites are situated around 15 – 20 minutes’ drive from some of regions most beautiful towns and villages and the nearby market in Issigeac is not to be missed. These Gites are perfectly placed to enable guests to sightsee without having to travel for miles but due to the location, offer a private and comfortable area to come back to after a great day out. I have already booked with Peter and Nancy for next year and would highly recommend this accommodation to anyone who is thinking of traveling to this area.
