“The Perfect Family Holiday” We had forgotten how beautiful France was having chosen the long haul holiday option for the past few years. A family celebration took us to France and to Domaine des Faures. Ray and Jacinta are very welcoming and have a good knowledge of the local area and of things to do and see. The house is idyllically positioned with wonderful views over the surrounding area. It is immaculately maintained and tastefully furnished. The rooms are large and spacious and each bedroom has its own en-suite. The evenings could be a bit cool but this gave us the perfect excuse to relax by the big open fire in the lounge. However, to be able to have lunch outside in the spring sunshine and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the area was a real treat. As were the sunsets – absolutely stunning! The age range of our party ranged widely but this did not prove a problem since there is so much to see and do. The more sporty members of the group enjoyed walking and cycling. There is a lovely pool at the property which looked very inviting but it was a bit too early in the year to be able to appreciate it fully. For those interested in history, there are lots of historic places to visit – Chateau Biron, Montbazillac , Roque-Gageac and Cadouin to name but a few. The view over the Dordogne valley from Domme is very beautiful (there is a lovely jewellery shop there too!!). Montpazier is a heritage site and very quaint and there was never a shortage of volunteers to go to the patisserie to purchase the bread! For those interested in food and drink, the French markets proved very popular. Wine is plentiful and reasonably priced as you would expect. However, for those with a more discerning palate, the great vineyards of Bordeaux are only about and 1-1 ½ hours drive away. We can thoroughly recommend a visit to Domaine des Faures. Everyone had a great time and we are all looking forward to repeating the experience.

Lovingly Restored France Villa in Aquitaine - La Ferme de la Dronne - Silver Tru

Riberac apartment

4 bedrooms / 4 bathrooms / sleeps 8

“Robert's review of La Ferme de la Dronne - Silver Truffle” This is a beautiful property in the beautiful French countryside. The grounds are very spacious and there is access to the river. The house is situated on a quiet country road. The owners went out of their way to make our stay comfortable and to ensure that we had everything we needed. Vera, the owner, is an interior decorator and you can see her creative touch throughout the house. Each room is beautifully decorated, with many original ideas. We liked the themes of each bedroom and found the living room to be an excellent family gathering place. Unlike many rentals, the kitchen here had all the implements one would need to do some serious cooking. Obviously the owners like good food! Beautiful countryside, quiet roads, a slow pace.

Gîte St Martin - Les Eyzies de Tayac

Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil cottage

2 bedrooms / 1 bathroom / sleeps 4

“A real opportunity to spend a “linguistic “holiday in Tayac in F” I have fond memories of Gite St Martin in Les Eyzies de Tayac : the house is very comfortable and pleasant, very picturesque of the region; The garden is spacious and peaceful I found I was able to relax there, I enjoyed visiting Les Eyzies and the region. There are many walks to do around the cottage. Lots of forests, hills and fields. Chantal and John make you feel very welcome. Chantal knows French customs well and she equally understands English tastes: she knows how to combine them and we feel at home in her property. It is a real opportunity to spend a "linguistic "holiday in a French environment, in very good conditions. Thoroughly recommended!

Au Pied du Marché character appartment in medieval

Sarlat-la-Canéda apartment

1 bedroom / 1 bathroom / sleeps 2

“Ideal Location in First Class appartment” A fanatastic choice well situated next to the Marie in the heart of this beautiful place with so much to see and offer. An appartment that was home from home, clean and well maintained. The obliging owners are based a short distance away in the town, although we had no reason to avail ourselves of their services. Market days are well worth perusing as an alternative to all the Dordogne has to offer right on your doorstep. Wee would certainly stay here again.

“Most Charming accommodation in Sarlat” Just stay here! Don't procrastinate! Don't look at other places! But leave yourself at least four nights to savour the experience. If possible make one of those days a Saturday for the markets. This town is charming, this accommodation is gorgeous, the hosts are wonderful. They have thought of everything to make it enjoyable and relaxing. While in Sarlat walk and look...but don't miss the eastern side of town (from the main street.) What are you waiting for?

Campagnac Villa - Pays de Bergerac.

Bergerac City villa

3 bedrooms / 2 bathrooms / sleeps 6

“Our stay at Campagnac villa was everything we wanted.” Campagnac Villa was an excellent base to explore the Dordogne. The villa itself was spacious, clean, welcoming and very well equipped. We all loved the gardens and pool, and were amazed at the peace and quiet. The location was ideal in terms of striking a balance between tranquility and places to explore. Paul was very welcoming, helpful and very knowledgeable about the area, providing us with suggestions of places to visit and activities for the children. A really enjoyable holiday. We would love to return! Thank You Paul

Chene Vert Cottage at 'Le Jardin des Amis'

Meyrals cottage

2 bedrooms / 1 bathroom / sleeps 4

“Stunning property in a beautiful part of France.” We stayed in Chene Vert in May 2010 for a week and in Tilluel in april 2009. Practically, Le Jardin des amis provides a very high standard of accommodation. Both gites were extremely clean and well equipped, light and airy by day and cosy by night. Supermarkets are close by and we enjoyed fresh bread from the local boulangerie (5 mins walk away). We would also recommend the Pizzeria which again is a 5 minute walk to Meyrals, a pretty medieval village. The pool area is fantastic and has lovely views of the orchard and woods beyond. All extremely popular with our 7 year old son whilst we enjoy the poolside honesty bar. The property provides a fantastic base to explore the Dordogne with lots to see and visit for all ages or tastes. Our favourite places are the gardens at the Chateau de Marqueyssac for great views over the Dordogne and a great place for children to run around and explore, Sarlat (for market and shopping) and the nearby airparc (a tree top rope and zip wire park) and all within a very short drive. Sue and John are warm and friendly hosts and make you feel extremely welcome. We have enjoyed both our holidays at Le Jardin des amis, so much so, we are starting to think about planning our third ! We would thoroughly recommend Le Jardin des amis to families, couples or groups!

Why Dordogne?

This picturesque part of southern France is the epitome of laid-back rural life. Lush, green meadows, stone built houses, grand châteaus and sprawling vineyards cover this area, and many have likened it to a sunnier, larger version of the Cotswolds in the UK. The landscape is steeped in history: explore prehistoric caves, 12th century fortresses and much, much more.

So if it's a taste of traditional France you're looking for, why not book a rental in the Dordogne? Choose from cottages, villas, apartments and, of course, gorgeous French gîtes.

A rich history

There are so many fascinating historical places of interest in the Dordogne, it's impossible to list them all here. But to get you started, highlights include the painted caves in Lascaux. Although the original caves are no longer open to the public, the replica caves are an impressive sight indeed. Visit the Cave of Font-de-Gaume to see the ancient engravings and paintings or ride the electric train through the caves at Rouffignac.

If you want to get your children interested in French history, you'll find plenty of opportunities in the Dordogne. Head to Les Villages Bournat where you'll discover a working watermill, walnut press, fairground rides, wood carving, pottery making and dressing up. At Chateau de Bridoire, watch a jousting display or even have a go a firing a crossbow! And at Vezac, navigate your way through the maze of sculpted hedges and flowers. There's a children's play area and café on site, too.

Food & wine

Whether you're buying fresh bread from the local bakery or dining out in an elegant restaurant, you're in for a taste sensation. Specialites include cassoulet and confit de canard, and local produce such as ceps, figs and chestnuts, will leave you wanting more. One of the best things about booking a self-catering rental in the Dordogne is having your own kitchen where you can recreate French recipes using local produce. There are hundreds of markets taking place all over the region. Salat market is one of the biggest and runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Visit La Truffe Sarladaise in Vezac where you can buy walnuts, truffles, wine and more. Speaking of wine, a visit to the Dordogne isn't complete without a vineyard tour and there are many excellent options here.

Charming cottage in Périgord Noir (4 pers) 2km Sarlat
A place you'd never want to leave

If you want peacefulness, beauty and life in a dreamlike place, this gite is what you're looking for. Its owners, bless their hearts, turned an old barn in a charming house with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and a kitchen with everything you may need on a holiday, corkscrew included. You can enjoy a meal and a glass of wine on the terrace. The 15 donkeys in the neighbourhood may be visiting from time to time and won't feel hurt if you feed them a loaf of bread. The local cat is also known to roam the place, such as a rabbit or two. The gite is about 3 kilometers from downtown Sarlat, a small and unbelievingly picturesque town boasting a few impressive manors and a trillion restaurants, bars and shops. You'd be well advised not to miss the food market which takes place every Wednesday morning. There are plenty of things to do around Sarlat: visiting castles and gardens, canoeing on the Dordogne, visiting towns like Montignac or Bergerac and, weather permitting, hot air ballooning. If you have a very light sleep, it would be a good idea to buy some ear plugs. You're in a place full of birds who have a tendency to give vent to their happiness at five in the morning. All in all, an unforgettable experience in a fantastic place. Not to be missed. Compliments to Celine and Mathieu and a kind word for Pascale, who is ready to help whenever needed. I could live here forever!

This is a tremendous property in every respect. We were a group of eight (there was room for at least another couple comfortably) Americans and booked for four nights. We could not think of a single negative. Bernie and Adele went all out to make this pace very very livable. -Everything was beyond well stocked. Not just six or eight dishes, but dozens of matching dishes, glasses and cups of varying sizes. Fully stocked kitchen. -The showers, bathrooms and WCs were great. Clean, well designed and in working order. Somewhat rare in France. -Having a washer and dryer is fantastic. Directions to all appliances nicely available -Plenty of space everywhere. -The location of the home is perfect. Just perfect. Walkable to everything. And Sarlat is such a wonderful city, with for what it offers and the things that are nearby. If you are considering this property, go ahead and book it. You can not do better!see more

A beautiful holiday home!!

We came with another couple, on our Harley Davidsons, and spent a week here. The whole place was beautifully decorated, with a lot of time and thought going into it. It was peaceful and relaxing. Would highly recommend to anyone. … see more
B&B/Chambre d'hote. (N) double room with balcony.
Such a pleasant stay! Such a lovely position.

Pam & Glyn not only have a lovey place but it is also in a spectacular part of the country. Everyday there is somewhere to visit. Beautiful villages, caves, the river, châteaux. Whilst the gîte is in a very quiet location, it is close to many of the sites of 'The Dordogne'. Our group arrived 'very' late due to a faulty SatNav system in our rental car and a holdup from a motorway accident...but we were still greeted with genuine warmth on our midnight arrival. The cottage is in a very lovely location that brought back childhood memories of wild fields/county lanes. We rose to birds with our breakfast on the patio then we were off for the day to explore and returned to have a wine in the garden. After dinner we would take a stroll around the quiet location. Domme (the prettiest village with restaurants, shops and 'views') can be reached quickly by car but I suggest walking to it via the lane from the gîte. We were a group of 4 ladies but I will definitely return with my husband to stay at this wonderful location again. Merci beaucoup Glyn & Pam! Susan,Kim, Jenny & Ange from Australia.see more
A beautiful stone cottage in the Dordogne
Best thing that happened to us all summer!

Despite a delayed and very late night arrival at our destination we were warmly greeted by our hosts Maggie and Rupert. The cottage was equally welcoming and we all immediately felt very much at home in this lovingly restored and decorated cottage. The pool area was roomy and comfortable and soon became our second living room - a place where we ate lunch, played and swam in the pool and read many of the novels thoughtfully provided in our cottage by our hosts (Rupert even insisted that our daughter take an unfinished novel home with her - to her great delight). The rural location of the cottage was the perfect setting, facilitating early morning jogs, walks and hikes beginning from the front door. Rupert provided tips about possible hiking/walking routes which were extremely helpful. As pleasant as the rural setting of the cottage was the fact that it is a short driving distance (Cadouin with its own ancient abbey is, for example, 7 kilometres away) from many small villages and towns and our hosts informed us about day and night markets which regularly take place in these and are well worth a visit. Canoe and kayak outings are available in the area and can be booked at a discount by the hosts. All in all, our stay here was the absolute highlight of our summer and we are planning to return.....see more
