I just got back from spending a week at L'alize in Roatan and had an amazing time! We were a group of friends in our 30's that live throughout the US and met in Roatan for our annual vacation together. The house was well kept and as advertised in the photos. We elected to have Olga cook her famous meals, and that was one of the best decisions we made for this trip. Coming home to a nice warm meal was great after a day of scuba diving and beach going. The keyhole beach was not very swim friendly due to the waves this time of year but definitely great to hang out and lounge around. The house is about 5-10 min car ride to West Bay and about 20 minutes from West End making the location very desirable. All in all a great vacation, I hope to return soon with my family as the home would be great for a family getaway. Special thanks to the property manager Tish; Olga & Eddie who look after the property.
Response from the owner We appreciate that you took the time to share some highlights of your recent trip to Roatan and specifically L’Alizé. As the person most likely to plan meals in my family, I have to agree with you that a vacation is not complete without a respite from cooking, and Olga makes it so easy. I have worked with Olga over the years so she might be an added perk for our guests, but I have discovered that her cooking completes my vacations so well that I wouldn’t think of cooking all our meals ever again. I identified with your observation about the waves in the keyhole being so tossed that you didn’t swim, yet its beauty and serenity drew friends together. This is one of the features that most attracted our family to L’Alizé. The connection with nature on the South Shore makes one think of the first settlers on Roatan of nearly 150 years ago. This wind swept shore invites you to explore the unusual rock formations and caves imagining how early settlers survived. So little has changed in this little spot. Yet one is also close to the peaceful calm waters and broad beaches of West Bay Beach (just 1 mile) , with tourists visiting from all over the world, to see these world class beaches. From the pristine wildness of the South shore directly in front of L’Alizé, to the activities on the popular beaches, everyone finds something they can look forward to. Thanks for sharing this review. We would be delighted if you could come back with your family.
“For the best stay, book L'Alize”
I vacationed at L'Alize with a group of friends in August 2014. Upon arrival, the property was very clean and inviting. The owners were amicable and provided detailed instructions regarding the features of the house. I stayed in the upstairs twin bedroom which was equipped with all essentials- bedding, towels and soap/shampoo. The connecting balcony was ideal for admiring the sunrise/sunset as well as providing a private and relaxing reading environment. One of my favorite features of L'Alize was the patio pool that overlooks the surrounding jungle and ocean. The keyhole beach access is a short scenic walk through the back property. I appreciated the available snorkeling kits provided by L'Alize which enabled me to explore coral reefs of Roatan. My friends and I were fortunate to utilize the services of a personal cook who prepared authentic Honduran cuisine which accentuated my overall experience. My only complaint was the high grade of the driveway which was almost too steep for our rental scooters and mopeds. The connecting road at the top of the driveway is not ideal for hailing a taxi, so a car or scooter is recommended to guests for utmost mobility. The nearest restaurant and convenient store is about a 7 or 8 minute drive away, much too far to walk. Overall, my stay on Roatan proved to be one of my most memorable vacations to date. It was the best atmosphere to spend time and catch up with my best friends. I would love to return to Roatan and L'Alize sometime in the future.
“Everything I expected and more!”
The house is exactly as the pictures you see, a great place for a family or a group of friends. The coordinator, Tish, welcomed us, walked us thru the house and was helpful in activities we wanted to do. The family who cooked for us (also cleaned the house) was an absolute joy. Very affordable and very, very good! The views are wonderful, the private cove is a treasure for kayaker's and snorkeling. Don't forget the deet and if you rent a vehicle other than the owners, be sure it has horsepower!
From the minute we decided to book L'Alize until we boarded the plane to leave Roatan we were given top notch service. Our pre-trip planning was a breeze and we had tons of help from the owner and manager. Upon arrival we were met at the airport and taken to the local grocery store to stock up on supplies. From the store it was about a 20-minute ride to L'Alize. Thankfully the house came with a van because the walk out to the road is steep!. We were given a tour of the house by Tish (the manager) and introduced to Olga, Edie, and their family (our caretakers, cooks, and concierge). The house is as described, perhaps even better, and pictures can not show how truly amazing it is. From the second you walk through the door you are preoccupied with the incredible view out every window. We spent a great deal of time on the decks but there were nights we had to eat inside because the breeze could be a bit much. However, waking up in the morning in the master suite is unbelievable! The breeze rolls through the room, the sound of the ocean is in the distance (along with a rooster), and you can lay in bed and watch the sunrise as cruise ships pass by. The kitchen is very well stocked and it was easy to cook for our large group (12 total). There are stairs everywhere at L'Alize and you must conquer a fair amount of them to get to the beaches. Both beaches are decent and Edie attempts to keep them clean but a fair deal of trash can wash in each night. The surf was a bit much for snorkeling for most our group but it was possible. The main beach in front of the house is next to the caretaker's house but the second beach (a 10 minute walk) is quite secluded. You are between West Bay and West End and both are easy to reach (we spent the majority of our time between the two). South Shore Zipline is a very short ride from the house (You will pass it daily). We ended up spending $140 for gas but we were constantly on the move. You will not be sorry if you stay
Response from the owner Thank you for this thoughtful review. The van we offer guests to rent, is practical for going between the nearby beaches, (West Bay 1 mile , West End 6 miles) but is a bit of a gas guzzler (12m/gal) for longer distances. Added to this is the reality that gas on the island is around $5. If one plans to do a lot of site seeing on the island you can hire a driver (Orsy our driver does this as well). This takes much of the stress out of traveling around on the tortuous island roads. With Orsy you don’t need to know exact direction because Orsy knows all the cool places on the island and he has a nice spacious van (Seats 13). The other option for getting around on the island is Econo rental car. They have late model cars which are fuel efficient and fun to drive, but most are standard transmission. They cost around $350 /wk but you will save on gas.
I had a group of 6 that stayed in the house. It was my 30th b day and this house just made it that much more special! We all had more than the space we needed! The people who looked after the house were unbelievably nice...maid service came everyday. The maintenance guy cut us fresh coconuts while we were down enjoying the amazing keyhole beach! We didn't take out the kayaks because we enjoyed snorkeling so much and we could just walk out of our privet beach. Water was rough for the first few days but when the wind shifted out of the north super smooth! No need really for the air conditioning we just left all the doors open and had a great breeze all day. Even in the rooms it never got hot. I will tell you one thing be (sure) and bring bug spray the best you can find I suggest the closest to 100% deet!!! Being the only one who got attacked all over my body you don't want to experience it! And put it on with everything you do! Going to town, sitting on the porch, going to walk on the beach everything you do!!! We will defiantly be back! You really can't go wrong with Vrbo!
Just got back from our trip - my 5 brothers & sisters and their spouses stayed here for a week (10 in all). The house has views that make you want to wake up early everyday. Lots of steps (we are all in late 50's & 60's) but we had no problems and go some much needed exercise. There is staff on site if you need them and we had 6 meals prepared by Olga - she is a very good cook. We had beignets for breakfast and really good chicken/rice/beans for dinners. The beach is in close walking distance and there is a trail to another keyhole beach just minutes away. The house is very private but just a short distance to town. We had the use of a van which made it so easy for taking short jaunts. All in all we had a wonderful time and would recommend this place to anyone - especially divers.
My wife and I plus our daughter her husband and our grandchildren had a most relaxing stay in Roatan. We were met by the grounds keeper and his family upon arriving. They were very helpful and interesting to talk to. We settled in quickly and enjoyed everything about our accommodations. Location was great, making it easy to get to anywhere on the island. The pool and private beach were favorite places to hang out. We snorkeled a lot, swam and relaxed. We couldn't ask for a better vacation.
“A Great Way to Relax”
We stayed at L'Alize for a family vacation and it was just what we needed. The accommodations were perfect with plenty of room for the couples and for the the children. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed and we enjoyed eating out on the patio in the morning with a gorgeous view. The kids were entertained with the pool and we were also able to tour island. The staff were very helpful. Would recommend buying groceries on the way there as it is remote but the privacy and calm and quiet are very worth it.
“Breathtaking says it all.”
My husband and I are very particular, so when it came to our honeymoon we picked this place because it had room, privacy and beauty. That is exactly what you will get. The island is beautiful, however the vacation was made because of this house and the location. The snorkeling was great right off the key hole. You can hike around, lay on the beach or hang out in the pool. You don't need to bring beach towels and I suggest water shoes for the key holes. Kelly was fabulous. She helped out whenever we needed it. Make sure you stop at the grocery store in Coxan Hole and load up for breakfast and lunches. You are not going to want to leave and there are no full service grocery stores in West Bay or West End. The water at the house is filtered which was great. If I were to come back, I would bring along a smaller soft cooler to take drinks down to the beach more easily. If you get a taxi, ask for Sonja. You will need to rent a car. Unfortunately our car insurance wouldn't cover out of the country so we couldn't rent the van they had at the property but it is easy to rent on the island. She was really sweet. The only negative that we had is the house below has a rooster that tends to crow at 4am and every hour after that. It didn't happen every night but make sure the upstairs patio doors are closed and you will hear him less. I would recommend this house over any of the resorts on the island and to anyone that would be traveling to Roatan. Thank you so much for the memorable honeymoon!
“Absolutely Lovely House and Superb Owners and Management”
A group of us stayed at L'Alize for 10 days. The house is absolutely fantastic, and the pictures are completely accurate. The location is perfect - very close to West Bay Beach but an easy escape from the crowds when necessary. The house is gorgeous and well-appointed and maintained; it had everything we needed to feel at home, including comfortable beds, spacious and well-equipped kitchens and bathrooms, plenty of towels, and a/C in the bedrooms (we didn't even need the a/C with the trade winds coming through - the house is situated perfectly to take advantage of them!). The owner and Kelly (manager) were wonderful - very helpful, very responsive, and very professional. I've rented quite a few properties via various rental sites, and I've always had good experiences, but this experience was the best yet in terms of the quality of the property, its location, and the professionalism and helpfulness of the management. Please don't change a thing! Tips: Instead of Gumbalimba for monkeys, check out Bodden's Monkey Tour between West End and Sandy Bay (I believe the sign says "Maya Canopy Tours.") It's way less expensive (about $8), and you can actually play with the monkeys. They also have two kinkajous. Also, "Cindy's" (if I recall correctly) in West End has an amazing chicken burrito, and Rotisserie Chicken in West End is also a must. JavaVine in West Bay Mall has very good coffee and pastries, and the Hungry Munkey makes great sandwiches. We found snorkeling to the reef in West Bay easiest in front of Infinity Bay - there seems to be a "channel" of sand there that will take you between the sections of the reef to get out to the deeper parts (instead of winding your way between coral outcroppings just off Tabayana near Black Rock). On a calm day, snorkeling in front of the house is pretty cool, too! We are looking forward to returning, and I've already recommended this rental to friends and colleagues!
