“An opportunity to experience the unique culture and meet the real people of Bali.”
We stayed at Kupu Kupu Villa for a full week in early July 2014. At the end of our visit we found it hard to tear ourself away to resume our normal lives. Situated just a ten minute walk from the township of Candidasa the villa is embedded in a largely undeveloped village where life has changed very little over many decades. The personal staff are sourced from this village (Nyuhtebel) and provide every conceivable service - cooking, cleaning, laundry, maintenance, massage, advice and local knowledge - all in a friendly and interactive way and delivered with a good working knowledge of English. The villa is modern, clean and spotlessly maintained. A minor criticism is the lack of water pressure, which means showering is a 10 to 15 minute activity if you insist on a hot shower, not something that is essential in this climate. Self contained kitchens, comfortable beds, cool breezes, private swimming pool and fabulous views of mountains, bay and paddy fields complete a 5 star experience. Candidasa itself is progressive, catering for locals and tourists alike with a number of cafes, restaurants and hotels providing varied dining and entertainment options. Live music features prominently in a number of bars and restaurants and is of very high quality. It is also easy to arrange a number of water and land based tours and activities all priced very competitively in the local currency. This holiday destination is best suited for active couples or groups of friends with no or older children. A steep driveway and a final approach of 20 - 30 steps make it less convenient for less mobile people, but the outlook is well worth the effort.
“A Balinese village getaway, spotlessly clean and well appointed, and a short walk to shops and restaurants.”
We stayed at Kupa Kupa Villa for one week in March 2014 and really enjoyed it. It was our first trip to Bali, and we opted for the airport pick up. It was punctual, friendly and good value, and far easier than trying to find our own way. As indicated on the Tripadvisor listing, the paths accessing the villa may not be suitable for the physically challenged, but our 60-something legs didn’t find them a problem. Actually the walks to and from the villa provided an interesting experience of Balinese village life. We stayed in the upper level villa. It was well appointed and spotlessly cleaned daily by the caretakers who also made a good breakfast. All the furniture including the double bed was in top condition. The terrace was a great place to relax and it offered nice rural views. The villa’s pool is small but deep and more than adequate for relief from the heat after a trip out to the many surrounding sights, or a walk up from Candidasa. The warungs, restaurants and shops along the main road and beachfront in Candidasa offer plenty of choice and a range of standards and costs. If we didn’t feel like walking too far, the German/Indonesian café at the bottom of the access stairs provided good meals and snacks. Overall, a great place to stay and relax away from the frenetic life of places like Kuta and Ubud. Good value too. Recommended.
“Dreaming of a REAL chill out holiday, look no further than Kupu Kupu”
We have now stayed at Kupu Kupu twice, heading for our third stay in September. What more could you ask for than to be pampered daily. Breakfast on the balcony followed by a 1hour's massage. A slow stroll into Candi Dasa for a coffee overlooking the ocean, fanned by gentle breezes. The toughest decision is choosing from a wonderful variety of restaurants for dinner. Hire a driver & car for the day ($40 approx) & he will take you anywhere within a 2hr drive. The holiday - Tension free & totally rejuvenating.
Response from the owner Many thanks for the great review, Len. You'll be pleased to know that the village administration has recently built a new concrete road that takes out the need to climb most of the steps. It's much easier now to get up to the villa, even with your dodgy knee. Regards, Peter & Lesley
“Luxury at an unbeatable price!”
I stayed at Kupu Kupu Villa with my wife and WOW! what an amazing experience! The villa is impeccable, the facilities and location will not disappoint. Amazing views from the huge balconies, 5 minute walk to the beach, 5-10 minute walk to shops and restaurants, great diving/fishing/surfing spots close by and the private masseuse how could you go wrong. Oh and the pool, what an amazing setting with Mt Agung as the backdrop, many afternoons were spent relaxing by the pool. Candi Dasa is a picturesque village away from the chaos of Kuta and Denpasa and provides glimpse of authentic Balinese life. We will definitely be going back!
