“Great staff, great location, great pool!”

Reviewed 18 Jun 2015

My sisters and I shared the Shikumen villa with private pool and wifi for 8 days in June. What a find! Awesome staff, beautiful villa with great amenities and short walk to shops and beach.

Response from the owner Thanks for your review, it was wonderful to read. Shikumen is unique and we think quite special. We look forward to seeing you next time you are in Bali. Best wishes, Lou

“Looking for an affordable villa with all the bells and whistles in Seminyak? Look no further in Shikumen Villa!”

Reviewed 9 Nov 2014

May I stress the AFFORDABLE part! This villa didn't hurt the pocket unlike the all the villas available in the Seminyak area. However it may be affordable, it did not lack in it's luxuries that most 5 star villas offer. - Air conditioned rooms. - Ensuites for each room. - An open central area for chilling around enjoying drinks or your breakfast. - And an awesome private dipping pool to cool off which is littered with beautiful magnolia flowers like a Balinese day spa. If you don't like the magnolia flowers in your dipping pool, don't worry - they will come to your pool and clean out the pool for you daily! The villa boasts interior and exterior finishes that make it a unique Bali villa experience. The quaint LED lit birdcages hanging around the villa provides a romantic illumination throughout the villa. And the glass detail of the rooms which connect the walls to the timber roof structure allows you to experience a modern take to the traditional architecture. I wouldn't say that the architecture is traditional Balinese, it however appears more Japanese with the use of the timber beams - but it does allow enough natural light into your room in the morning to gently wake you up. They cleaned your room/villa every day. So cleanliness is top notch. Even after you have made a bit of a mess from all the pre-drinks before we went out that night and from the breakfast the morning after, the villa was immaculate when we got back from our day activities. Now here's the part I'm sure you guys want to hear. I wouldn't really call it the negative or cons about the villa, but something to look out for. The ensuite sinks has a bit of a design flaw. The taps and the vanity sink don't work too well with each other. Once you turn the tap on, which I guarantee you may turn on too much (accidentally of course) the water hits the basin so hard you are going to get wet. It's as if when you turn the tap on, it's like having a spoon under the water which splashes everywhere. Even if you try to turn the tap on, ever so gently, you either get no water, or get splashed on if you turn for more water. Another issue with the ensuite (which mainly was from the main bedroom ensuite) was there was A LOT of mosquitoes and bugs. Because the main bedroom ensuite opens out to open air. There's a cute little "rainforest" garden by the open shower which provides natural ventilation and rain water to water that garden. Unfortunately, it allows bugs and mosquitoes in as well. Also if you don't like showering with snails, then shower in the other room. Also if you've accidentally left the ensuite door open, you will be inundated with mosquitoes as you sleep. The villa location has its plus and minuses. The villa is tucked away off the beaten track which is nice and secluded but still accessible to the beach and the main shopping/bar/restaurant strip. However, every taxi driver has no idea where it is even after you've given them your hotel business card. In the end, you end up knowing where it is more than them and you direct the driver where to go. I guess it gives you the opportunity to really know where you are in Seminyak. Another thing about the location you may want to know is that there is a nightclub nearby, it's actually a fair distance away but you still hear the faint thumping of the bass in the "wee" hours of the night. It is more prominent in the open central area and the dipping pool. In the room, it is noticeable but we turned on our own relaxing music to take away the noise. Overall, the Shikumen Villa is an excellent stay for the price. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to my friends and family.

Response from the owner Thanks for taking the time to write such a wonderful and detailed review, it was a pleasure to read. The Shikumen Villa is unique. The original structure is from the Chinese community in Indonesia, and the design draws on this heritage. Many thanks for choosing to stay with us, and I look forward to meeting you next time you are in Bali. Best wishes, Lou

“Great location and very comfortable”

Reviewed 15 Oct 2014

My husband and I stayed for a week with our 2 teenage children in the Shikumen 2 bedroom villa. This is a lovely, big, private villa (possibly a little too private for me but this is a personal preference), beds very comfortable, air con in bedrooms. Staff are very helpful and friendly. It was close to everything we needed, a stroll to the beach and shops and restaurants as close as 100m.

Response from the owner Thank you for choosing to stay with us and I am so happy you enjoyed your holiday with us. Regards, Lou.

“A little piece of paradise in Seminyak”

Reviewed 28 Aug 2014

We recently stayed at the Shikumen Villa with our two young children and absolutely loved it. Positioned in the centre of Seminyak, it was protected from the noise of the busy street close by and our little sanctuary to come home to after a day in the hustle and bustle of Seminyak. The villa has cooking facilities but we chose to eat out at the many and varied local & tourist restaurants a minutes walk away. Day spas are abundant, close & cheap and became our afternoon ritual. Our kids loved the pool while we relaxed in the open living area. Ginger staff Sri, Pia & Vita were fantastic from the moment we booked and made us feel welcome. No request was too difficult and they arranged laundry, airport transfers and day trips with an amazing driver, thank you Luka, and all cheap. I recommend airport transfers as none of the cab drivers knew where the Villa was. We always asked to be dropped at Harris Hotel which is at start of the lane way to the villa. The villa was serviced daily, as was the pool and clean beach towels provided. Eat Street you can walk to but we chose to use cabs. They are everywhere and nowhere in Seminyak cost us more than $5 to get to. In the evenings you can hear music noise from the bars close by but it was nothing that kept us, or the kids awake. We considered it a small price to pay for being central and having everything on our door step. This was out first trip to Bali and we will definitely be returning to the Shikumen Villa. It was everything we need for a great maiden voyage to Bali.

Response from the owner I enjoyed reading that. It is always great to hear that new visitors to Bali have enjoyed their stay. Thank you for taking the time to write such a terrific and detailed review. Look forward to seeing you next time you are in Bali, Lou.

“Our stay in Seminyak”

Reviewed 24 Jul 2014

Even before getting to Seminyak I was impressed with the customer service from Vita and Sri, their communication and confirmation was first rate. Thank you. The Shikumen Villa was fantastic, the perfect experience for a first time Bali visitor and family. At every opportunity the staff made the effort to say hello and make sure we all were being looked after, especially our children who they welcomed warmly. The Villa was in a good spot - not far from the beach and within walking distance to restaurants and main roads. Special mention for the muesli - it was delicious!

Response from the owner What a great review. The Shikumen Villa is a terrific option, providing a unique experience right in the heart of Seminyak. Thanks for mentioning Vita and Sri. They have great communication skills and lovely personalities to match. It can be difficult on your first trip to Bali but they definitely help out with the information they have and their positive attitude. Regards, Lou PS Glad you enjoyed the muesli. We are now making our own palm sugar and vanilla bean syrup as a pancake topping, and it is awesome

“Will definitely return to Bali Ginger Suites!”

Reviewed 3 May 2014

A great place to enjoy the best of Bali! Close enough to 'the action', but away from the crazy busy areas. There's so much within walking distance - incredible food, terrific bars, great shopping, beach - you could spend all your time just in this area and never get bored. Bali Ginger Suites itself is a haven - I went with my three teenagers and enjoyed days by the pool, with wonderful personal attention from managers Vita and Pia, and owners Lou and Grahame; not to mention the friendly smiling staff. Great value for money - I definitely will be back, and would recommend this to anyone wanting a relaxing, hassle free stay in beautiful environs!

Response from the owner Great to read your lovely review and to hear that you and your family had such a lovely stay in our Shikumen Villa. It is a great option for small families who stay at Bali Ginger Suites with it's own pool, but also access to the larger pool at BGS. Our location does have a great variety of options for fun and entertainment nearby, and seems to be getting better all the time. For me, it is difficult to go past the beach at sunset. Thanks for taking the time to review us, and we look forward to your next visit. Best wishes, Lou.

“luxury wood villa with private pool close to surf spot beach”

Reviewed 31 Mar 2014

we went there for a surf trip -- amazing wood-villa, huge bed, clean, good breakfast choice included, nice pool to cooldown after the waves, outdoor veranda to chillout, close to gadogado beach and very friendly and helpful staff -- all in all very recommandable, thank you !

Response from the owner Thanks for staying at our beautiful Shikumen Villa. This 2 bedroom villa has been popular for guests who are wanting privacy along with a relaxed yet stylish surrounds. Just 500 meters from the beach the surf is never far away, and we are glad you enjoyed staying here. Kind regards, Lou.

“relaxing”

Reviewed 5 Dec 2013

The Shikumen villa was indeed a relaxing place to stay. The villa and the pool were very well maintained. The only down side is the noise. By day it was the building being constructed next door and by night the local night clubs. The ear plugs provided did help with the night club noise. Overall I would higly recommend staying here but check if construction is finished next door.

Response from the owner Hi, and thank you for choosing to stay at The Shikumen Villa. We are glad you enjoyed your stay, and happy to read that you highly recommend us. Just a quick update regarding the construction, it is progressing rapidly and should be completed shortly. Building times are restricted to 8am and 5pm in Bali, and we monitor this. We are not prepared to give a completion date, as this is Bali and we know how things can go off-schedule. However, we will maintain our heavily discounted booking rates until it is completed. It is a great opportunity to book a private 2 bedroom villa in Seminyak at a bargain price. Regards, Lou.

“Beautiful”

Reviewed 17 Nov 2013

Beautiful and well located, close to the main roads. The staff were amazing. Only had a couple of issues with booking and check-in, making payments. I would reccomend using the transfers to and from the airport as taxi's dont know where Bali Ginger suites, or the Shikumen Villa is. None of this however detracted from how lovely my stay was.

Response from the owner Thankyou for your wonderful review, and for choosing to have your vacation at Shikumen Villa. Regarding your feedback about check-in, we have reviewed our procedures, and also have a new staff member beginning in December. There is nothing better than an easy check in after traveling to a new country, and it is certainly what we aim for here. We are also appointing a driver who will handle the airport pickups as it is so much easier to be welcomed on arrival with no hassles at all, and the prices are similar to the taxi fare. Once again, thanks for your feedback, and we look forward to seeing you next time. Regards, Lou.

“Super stay”

Reviewed 5 Aug 2013

We were a family of 7 people, and the Shikumen Villa was just perfect for us. Nice house, with a fantastic architecture. The house is situated just beside a very busy and noise street. But when you are in or just outside the villa, you feel like you are in a peacefull and quite place. Nice breakfast served in the villa, and very helpfull staff. Very close to the beach (500 mtr), and also very close to the eating street Oberoi Street...25.000 Idr for a cab...or 2 km walk.

Response from the owner Shikumen Villa is in a great location, especially if you don't mind a bit of noise from the surrounding hub of Seminyak. It is so easy to walk to many places, and there are many things to see and do. We are glad you appreciated the architecture. It is a unique and fun place to stay with its beautiful pool and courtyard, as well as the antique Chinese elements. Best wishes, Lou.
